SUNDAY TALKING...

Slim's arrival day in 2006

She arrived at our home in a pack of stray dogs.  Ron had his pellet gun and began to shoot at the strays.  She is the only one he hit and she kept crawling toward him.  "Ok, you can stay". That was 17 years ago.

Slim has struggled with age.  I have refused to let her go.  She has been the smartest, sweetest, most talented dog I have ever known.  How Ron knew she would be such a great dog to keep is beyond me but he was a good judge.

Monday of this week I had a doctor's appointment early in the morning.  Arriving home I found Frankie, my younger dog, leading me to the kitchen where Slim was spread out, unable to get up.  I knew this was the end.

The appointment to have Slim put to sleep was made for 3:15 that afternoon.  I wasn't going to tell anyone but my son called and caught me in distress.  I told him the plan and the next thing I knew was he was on his way from Tulsa to go with me.

The Veterinary clinic had cared for Slim all her life so it was a difficult time for each of us as we said goodbye to an amazing girl.

DID YOU KNOW...

The Iron Maiden Wasn't a Thing

No, this supposed torture device never actually existed. The widespread medieval use is a classic 18th-century myth, supported because of the perceptions that the Middle Ages were a widely uncivilized era of violence and mayhem. (They were bad, but not that bad.)

It was allowed for persons to VISIT the relic and enter the GATE but crossing the FIELD was a problem.  You first had to pass the dreadful SMELL of dead FROGS and then CHECK your bags with the guard.

The MINISTER was wearing a very strange salmon pink HABIT and did not appear to belong in the ABANDONED TEMPLE.  He appeared IMMUNE to the HAND that grabbed him to pull him out the door of the shrine.

"You are not allowed here!" a booming voice screamed at the preacher as the man was tossed to the ground.

SUNDAY TALKING...

Today we have sprung forward...

The clock says 7:00 AM but my body is saying 6:00 AM.  Should I be awake yet?

Retirement makes this somewhat easier.  The pups have returned to bed and I shall do the same.

Do you experience this twice a year time change in your corner of the world?

Death at the Gates of Paradise - Javier Bauluz, 2000

Javier Bauluz was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for this famous photograph, which underlines the large disparity between social classes in the world. This image depicts two tourists passively sitting in front of the lifeless body of a migrant who was trying to reach Europe.

DID YOU KNOW...

Ketchup Was Sold in the 1830s as Medicine

Forget Ibuprofen.  In the 1830s, when it came to popular medicine, ketchup was all the rage. In 1834, it was sold as a cure for indigestion by an Ohio physician named John Cook. It wasn't popularized as a condiment until the late 19th century. The more you know.

This week's words/prompts are:

1. oppose 2. child 3. mind 4. kitchen 5. foundation 6. excavation

and/or:

1. exceed 2. exploration 3. enterprise 4. escape 5. entertain 6. efficient

Geoffrey appeared to be salmon pink after his exploration of the tunnel.  The child was difficult to entertain but his own efforts to occupy himself usually would exceed the enterprise.  This day after Geoffrey had decided to oppose his guardian, he began the foundation excavation under the kitchen. Before anyone could detect the huge hole the boy had been able to dig, his ability to escape was lost. His guardian in the kitchen began to feel a tremble in the earth.  Geoffrey's mind was racing when he realized the earth was packing around him. Suddenly he felt hands grasp his feet as he was pulled out. It was an efficient effort to free the boy who was then sent to bed without any supper.

SUNDAY TALKING

OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS

1.) I fell out of my attic.  2020

2.) I fell in a huge snow drift. 2021

3.) I fell by slipping on black ice on my porch. 2022

4.) I fell behind my heater while working on the back. 2023

My PCM was made aware of these falls.  He scanned me after the first fall because I hit my head.  All appeared well.  My children were made aware of the first three falls but I don't see the need to tell them about this last one.  What can they do anyway?  The both work outside their homes and cannot afford time out to check on me for minor emergencies. I have managed to get up on my own but not without exerting a lot of energy and creating more pain along with the fall.

Ron experienced many falls.  We tried for me to help him up but he was just too heavy.  Finally he allowed me to call 911 and help arrived within 10 minutes every time.  He enjoyed visiting with the emergency responders while they got him up.

My cell phone is on a lanyard around my neck. (Can't get Life Alert in this location.) Now I am keeping my cane handy.  But the biggest concern I have is why does this happen.  The falls creep up on me when least expected.   So far my doctor has not given me any idea how to prevent them.  I am 76 years of age and read an article this morning about dehydration being a cause.  Also medications can be the problem.  I have heart disease and take many many pills.

Any ideas or suggestions?

DID YOU KNOW...

Did you know it’s illegal to feed pigeons on the sidewalks and streets in San Francisco?

Sure, a sprinkle of breadcrumbs to feed hungry birds may seem harmless but in the popular Californian city, you could get into trouble. San Francisco's Public Works Department explains this law is in place because there "are dozens of reasons why" you shouldn't feed your new pigeon friends, "but mainly: feeding pigeons harm our neighborhoods and also harms the birds."

Amazing! You hang something in your closet, for a while, and it shrinks 2 sizes!

Skinny people irritate me! Especially when they say things like...'You know sometimes I forget to eat!' .....Now, I've forgotten my address, my mother's maiden name, and my keys, but I have never forgotten to eat..

SUNDAY TALKING...

It was a surprise to get a call from an old friend last night.  When I say "old" it is very true.  She was an associate pastor in  my church home.  She saw my name on the register and my phone number and called.  It was amazing to me all the things she remembered about my children.  She was their youth leader from elementary school age to high school graduation.

Her reason to call was because she also remembered about me.  She was amazed about how happy my kids were despite the fact that we were coming out of a divorce and living in adjusted income housing. It was a frightening place to live but my children did not know it.  The loved it because they were surrounded by other children and it was the first time we had lived any place with so many kids. This pastor had trouble believing how well adjusted my son and daughter were despite the sorrow surrounding  their mother.

Now I am 76 and the pastor must be over 90 and my children are in their 50s.  I was able to assure her that we had survived on love and still do with grandchildren and their spouses in the loop.
