ANTIQUE DAY

According to Lynn at Good Things Happen, this is National Antique Day.  Here is one of my treasured antiques and maybe someone will know what it is for.  My mother thought enough of it to put the names of her grandparents and her great grandmother inside it.  She did not say what it is though.

I am sure it is hand painted but  not sure if it is some kind of eye cup or egg cup on the top and don't have a clue what would go inside.  Maybe it is a candle holder with a place to store the dripping wax?

Post one of your favorite antiques, let  me know and I will link your post here on my blog.

  1. My two guesses were the same as yours. They used to eat coddled eggs years ago. Odd that today is antique day because I am going antiquing with my daughter-in-law!

  2. I am not at all knowledgeable in spite of having been married to an antique dealer. I think one has to be born that way. I would guess an egg cup from the size and shape of the cup on top, but I would not even have a guess then what the bottom would be for...other than store names of beloved family members.

  5. Thanks for the shout out, Annie! I have no idea what that is - I've never seen anything like it. That would be something fun to take to Antiques Road Show!

  6. I have a french butter press that looks somewhat similar, but it doesn't have the top cup on the lid. Yours is a family treasure!

  7. My guess it's an egg cup with a bottom to put hot water in to keep it warm... I hope there is someone out there that knows!

  8. I would say it is a funeral urn, but since there are no ashes inside - maybe not.

  9. Totally clueless here. It is a cumbersome way to present eggs though... I hope someone does know.

  10. I have no idea, but my mother is a docent at the Royal Ontario Museum, so maybe she can help. I have just e-mailed her the photos.

  11. I have no clue but if the Antiques Road Show is ever in your area, take it to them. They could tell you what it is worth but more importantly, what it is. Hope you find out.
