Instead of a furnace blast upon opening the door today, we actually felt a cool breeze at 73 degrees and a light rain had fallen to cause a sweet Fall-like aroma. The chickens did not linger in the hen house when I opened their door. They entered the outdoors with squawking, flapping and seemingly joyful exiting. Perhaps they will be able to get back to the business of laying eggs. Over the past several weeks we have been doing well to get two eggs a day.
The goats all were taking this cool down in stride except for Tandy Kid who has lived every day of his life in extremely hot temperatures and must wonder what this day is about. He was really enjoying a good romp in the goat pen.
How can we go from 105 actual temp and heat index of 111 one day and be this cool the next? We were beginning to think this day would never come. It was a real thrill to throw open the curtains and watch the wildlife starting to move around too. With all the curtains closed throughout the house, it has lent to the depression of the heat. Today we are supposed to reach 96 and for some that might seem like a warm day but for us it will be springtime.
Hope I am not counting my chickens before they hatch or jinxing us some way for acting like the heat wave is over because I know, having lived most of my life in Oklahoma, we could easily be back in the triple digits by morning. Just know I'm going to enjoy this day as much as possible and I'm hoping the rest of my heat laden friends are getting a break as well.

Granny - hopefully 96 today and maybe 92 tomorrow and 88 on Tuesday:)
ReplyDeleteOklahoma heat would make me an air-conditioning addict!
I hope you got lots of eggs!!
ReplyDeleteLoving Annie -- Believe me, I am and air-conditioning addict and when it is this hot, there is no place else to be but right in front of the a/c.
ReplyDeletekenju -- Not a lot of eggs today, but I did get four so that's better:)
Send that break over here, please :)
ReplyDeleteSo I saw - I kid you not - a mint green colored egg today. It was that way naturally! What kind of pastel chickens lay these eggs??
Oh my goodness - no relief here yet.

Riot Kitty -- Chickens called Araucaunas are also known as Easter Egg chickens because they lay eggs with color variations from light green to darker green to blue and some light pink. Right now I do not have any Aracaunas but I will have more someday hopefully.
ReplyDeleteChatty Crone -- I wish you a day's relief too. Hopefully we'll both have a longer break from this heat than one day.
We've been very hot, too, but I just keep remembering winter:)
ReplyDeleteWe've had the same emotions here. I've been saying I'm anxious for the day when I step outside and then go back in to find a swearshirt.
ReplyDeleteWe too have had a bit of a respite. High today was a dry 82. I can live with that.
So glad you got some respite from that horrible heat and humidity, Annie. We've had the same thing only we're still in the midst of our heatwave. It's supposed to break tonight, but so far it's still 75 degrees with a humidex of 91 and it's midnight. UGH! Hope you've enjoyed every fresh-air moment. It is lovely to have the curtains open, isn't it?
ReplyDeleteAnnie,
ReplyDeleteIt has been very hot here in Pennsylvania, too, but today was a day of light beautiful rain and and temperature of about 80 degrees.
Yes, it has been wonderful here today.
How is David making out with her kittens?
Wish I could get free eggs every day! Thats right, every critter has been hiding from the heat all this time!
ReplyDeleteWhere I work over the just cooked foods all night, is always really hot too- but don't think I'd take all that heat well at home you're describing!
We just had cooler Temps today too! Whew!
Enjoy!
JeanMac – They say a horrible winter follows a horrible summer. I think it is reverse. Last winter was horribly cold followed by this horrid heat and so I’m pulling for a mellow winter. I figured your summers were always fairly cool.
ReplyDeleteCliff – We’ve been wearing our “swearshirts” every day. LOL Fingers are crossed that the heat wave is over for all of us.
Talon – I’m wishing for you to have a cool day today. Yes, having the curtains open is a most refreshing feeling. I hate walking through the house and not being able to just glance out at the beauty of nature.
Nancy – I’m so glad you posted because it reminded me to read your story from last Friday. It was great. I had been to the Elderstorytelling blog early Friday morning and it had not been posted yet then I got carried away and forgot to go back. I regret telling you that David only has one kitten remaining. The other three just slipped away one at a time. The remaining one is a feisty little fellow and our granddaughter named him Stripes.
Snaggle Tooth – It has been amazing to watch my pygmy goats and guinea fowl seemingly enjoy this heat. Their native home is Africa and even when shade is available, they will be grazing out in the open sun. Glad you are getting some cooler temps too. It seems many are reporting the same.
We still have to get through November before our temps start dropping out of the 90's. :(
ReplyDeleteDani -- 90's I can take. We're in for 90's too and we're not seeing any three digits predicted again anytime soon whoohoo!
ReplyDelete73 degrees sounds like heaven to me.
ReplyDeleteThat's some drop in temperature! Enjoy it while you can. I don't remember the last time I had the windows open like that or felt a summer breeze. It just doesn't happen here in Miami.
ReplyDeleteWhereas we - lulled by our recent hot spell - feel a bit glum at grey skies and a temperature drop with winter looming. Ain't no pleasing some folk:)
ReplyDeleteSometimes the leaves - with the breeze - sounds exactly like a huge downpour.
Lynn -- We are still in a cooler phase of days and I'm hoping we have seen the last of the extremely dangerous heat.
ReplyDeleteScarlet Ily -- I had the curtains open and NOT the windows. We certainly did not cool enough for that. I will bet your trip kept you cool cause you looked "cool":)
Pat -- I look forward to winter as long as we don't have ice storms again. While leaves blowing sounds like rain falling, tree limbs cracking and falling sound like large bombs being dropped.
