DIFFERENT CREEPY

Joey has raised an interesting comment on his blog Joey's Pad regarding anonymous contributors. His post is pretty funny so I hope he meant for it to be funny. This has caused me to mention a problem I am seeing.

When I comment on a blog, I usually check the box that asks for a copy of other comments to be emailed to me. First I started receiving anonymous foreign language (Asian) comments from Cliff's blog. I don't know what cured that but it went on for quite a while. Next they started coming out of Jamie Dawn's old blog and that seems to be getting worse. One came from Darlene's today. Do any of you know what I'm talking about and do you think these might contain computer viruses?

(If none of you check the box for "follow up" comments, how do you know if the blogger has responded to your comment?)

  1. Who knows? My excellent (free) anti-virus checks for that. I do get anonymous spam from the Orient and other nuts they are summarily rejected. I really don't like anonymous comments.

  2. Oh my gosh! You got an Asian reply from my blog? I don't think I will ever understand how blogs work. I am baffled by the symbols in place of text I see on some blogs. I got one on mine and deleted it. What is going on?

  3. That's bizarre - I've never had that happen. Hope it's not any kind of virus.

  4. I have never checked those boxes before, so I never got one. Thank God!!

  5. Just don't use Microsoft and you won't have to worry about viruses. I haven't checked those boxes though so I haven't seen them.

  6. Well thanks for the link. It was a serious point made in a funny way! In other words it's ok to laugh. :)

I've never ticked the box either. I do get an e-mail every time I receive a comment though and that's when I tend to pick up weird comments normally on posts from ages ago.

  7. So far I have not had any trouble, they only weird thing I sometimes get is on accepting a comment it says "Comment Published" but some never appear. perhaps it's the Google Ghost" lol.

  8. I avoid checking those boxes because of all the e-mails I get anyway. Also, I am not sure where they are linked to.

  9. The (alien looking) cloud picture I took was the real deal, no photoshop. I was driving home, saw it, and pulled in my driveway and took it right away because I was afraid it'd change!

  11. Sometimes I just come back and read comments (like now I'll skip down to Voodoo Umbrella and see if you've written anything back). Not with everyone on not on every post, but that's how I do it. I suppose I've missed some comments, but that's OK.

I have no idea where the "follow up" box is. I looked for it and didn't see it.

  12. It's easy - I re-read many of my friends comments, if they're the type to post a follow-up.

Ily - the follow-up bx is in the popup window when you have to fill out that nonsense word to get your post to show. I don't see it when I post comments that don't have to be approved. At least I don't think that I do...

  13. Yes I got hit a few days ago....I got chinese characters as comments in about 20 old posts and I sat diligently and deleted all of them.

I used to hit follow on comments but then the emails became too many....now if I asked a question the person usually emails me the response...I think Typepad has a way their people can reply to an email automatically....other wise i usually pay the person a visit to see if they responded to the question....not that I need a reason to go back but it's nice to go back and visit again!!!
