A MISSIONARY

Question Of The Week 5-5-14

What did you want to be when you grew up?

I truly thought I would grow up to be a missionary so I guess you could say my desire was for a missionary position:)

  1. Old enough to stay up all night and watch black and white television. Now I am. But I don't.
Okay, First it was Roy Rogers but I didn't like horses. Then Mickey Mantle but I was too...everything. Then I thought I wanted to be a TV journalist but I have a face for radio. Then I met Marilyn at college and wanted to do what ever it took to get her to marry me a live happily ever after. So we farm and run a kennel. We're still on plan.

  2. I used to worry that I didn't have a vocation in mind, such as teacher or nurse (seems as if those are the professions my friends aspired to.) I really wanted to be a mom and never did get to be one.

  3. I wanted to be a nurse for the longest time. Then, my mother gently pointed out that my tendency to keel over in a dead faint at the sight of blood might not be so compatible with that particular career choice.

  5. I wanted to work in a library. It was the only job I ever wanted. I had numerous jobs before I got to the library but it was the best 20 years of my life.

  6. I wanted to be a doctor but reality hit and so I went to work. Much later I went to college to become a marine biologist till Jaws scared me out of the water. Then a journalist crossed my mind. Not sure I have yet decided as I do change my mind a lot. Guess I will settle for really old and healthy lady.

  7. I wanted to be an actress and actually minored in college in drama...but would have had to have surgery on various parts to be successful.

Now that is a love story:)

But you are certainly one great Auntie:)

lol! Yes I would imagine that wouldn't serve in the medical profession.

How neat that you fulfilled your childhood wish.

    Aunt Betsy
20 years in a Library. Did you have to be quiet all those years?

More than wanting to be a mom, I wanted to be a grandmother and I do like that a lot.

I definitely would settle for the healthy part and certainly can't avoid the old part very well.

Not any more. They take actor of all shapes and sizes. My niece studied film and theater at NYU and tried various things with acting but did not like the people she was forced to work with in that field so gave it up.

  9. I was wracking my brain trying to remember what I wanted to be. I never had any grandiose plans. I think I wanted to be a secretary in high school because I wanted something completely different from cutting pineapples at Dole Pineapple Factory. I really wanted a job in an air conditioned environment. I wanted to be a writer at one time too.

I did love my teaching career, even though my room wasn't air conditioned. But that's OK. The children made up for it.

  10. I wanted to be a garbage lady. When riding the school bus in Elementary school I used to daydream, watch the garbage men and think of all the COOL things they found that people threw away!~ I have to say that my interests have not changed...... (Monica)

  12. Thank you - I like being an auntie. Just wish I could see them a little more often.

I thought about it after I posted - I would have loved being a librarian. There was no degree program for that anywhere in the state of Georgia and I was limited to the college in my hometown. I have always loved the library.

I'm still trying to figure it out for real but back when I was a kid, I wanted to be a hairdresser, a nurse, a teacher, an army officer...and I'm none of those things and all of those things, sort of.

You should have been a tour guide:)

    Rob and Monica
Monica, so funny. Yes your interests have not changed. lol My Ron enjoyed dumpster diving too:)

Surely you can think of something. You are very pretty so you could have been a model.

Come here and be a librarian. Our little church went to great lengths to start a little library and no one has used it. The internet is probably replacing a lot of libraries. That is sad.

I thought you had that already.

    Cliff
I like to go back and add little tidbits. I thought I would say it before someone else did. lol

Never in the military, I have often been called a drill sergeant. I know what you mean.

  18. A doctor. I went as far as to get a degree in biology and then HMOs came into being and, as as result, I gave up on medicine as a career. I can only imagine what pre-meds today are thinking about Obamacare.

  19. To be honest, I really didn't have an occupation while growing up. I did have a perverse goal early on, but fortunately it eventually passed.

However, as an adult, I semi-joked about become a t.v. evangelist, 'cause you know, it's about the Benjamins.

  20. LOL Annie! I wanted to be a nurse, an actress, a superhero, a lawyer, and then a journalist. Did the last one. I think I really just wanted to raise hell and get paid for it, which is what I do now.

  21. I always said I wanted to be a cowboy, n everyone said I couldn't. Still think I can, too. I always wanted to train horses.
Folks told me I should be a Vet, but I didn't want to deal with alot of negatives.

You are both. You teach us a lot on your beautiful blog and your certainly are a writer. My dear friend Ken Jackson (published book author, editor, professor) responded to me once about my desire to be a writer by saying, “You write don't you? Then you are a writer.”

I hear there are not many pre-meds today because pursuing medicine is not as attractive as it was before Obamacare.

I should have asked what appealed to choosing a profession as an adult. If you go back and read the other comments, no one has mentioned being attracted to a career when they were a child, for the money.

    Riot Kitty
Guess you saw my choice. lol Anyone who reads your blog knows you are all those things:)

    Snaggle Tooth
And the truth comes out. Of course you wanted to be a cowboy! Didn't we all? I had to give up that dream due to a fear of horses. I have to admit I wouldn’t have minded being Jane as in Tarzan and Jane:)
