BONUS QUESTION FOR 2011

I am always pestering my family for an idea for the Question Of The Week.  My last question for 2011 was already posted when I received this email from my daughter.  It's a good one so we can think of it as a bonus question.  She wrote:

"Ok here is my suggestion.  What holiday decoration do you miss most, or look forward to seeing again  after you have them all packed away for another year? Mine is my wall of cards and pictures from friends and loved ones. It always makes me smile and is a tradition I got from my mommy :)"

That makes this mommy happy:)  What decoration do you miss the most?

  1. We had a lovely cotton snowman when I was a child. Mother had it and for some reason I enjoyed seeing it come out of the decorations every year. One day I ask my mother what ever happened to the snowman and told her how much I had always adored it. She admitted that it was so old she had finally thrown it away. Several days later the children and I came home after a very long day at school and work and sitting on my living room table was a snowman just like the one I loved. My mother had made me my own. It is one of the most treasured decorations I own and I always hate to put it away.

  2. I miss my tree, just plain with the twinkling white lights. In fact , I missed it so much after I packed it up yesterday that I brought my faux ficus tree into the family room and ran some lights up the inner trunk.
It may not work for others but I love it so much.

do you know how to make the cotten ball snowman? I'd love to make one and then when I bring it out , I'd feel like we were sharing something. I hope that doesnt sound silly..

  3. My favorite would have to be the handmade ornaments crafted by my kids when they were little. Nothing fancy - just some sentimental little things that remind me of their younger years and Christmases we had together.

I'll miss the red rocking chair that said "Grandma" it was my mother's and she's been gone almost 3 years. I'll especially miss it next year since I'm giving it to my daughter and she live 1100 miles awaty!

  6. I like it so much when everything is taken down and put away that...yeah, I'm the grinch...
Okay, I do like my wifes 'village' she puts up most years.

  7. I think I miss the decorations that my children made when they were in grade school. This was a hard one because so many of the decorations have memories. I should call our Christmas Tree a Memory Tree because that's what it is.

  8. I have a small tree made of coat hangers, tinsel, & lights. My hubster made it for me the first Christmas we were married. He was so proud of his creation. I always the glow and sparkle of that tree after it's stashed away.

  9. Definitely my front door wreath with its white lights. This is the first year I had it on a timer and it has been so lovely to see my front door glowing when I get home after dark.

A close second - or really a tie - is the Santa doll that belonged to my great aunt Grace. She was a childless woman like me, so I always wonder why she had that. My mom impulsively gave it to me several years ago when I was spending Christmas with she and dad. Aunt Grace was special to her, so I was surprised that she wanted to part with it.

  10. I miss the tree - I don't have any greenage in the house normally as I'm rubbish at looking after them and they always die! Happy New Year x

  11. The lights around my front door. I have always said I am going to buy some of those tube lights and leave them there all the time:)

  12. Hmmm, nothing really. I have to be honest and say I feel no great attachment to any of our Christmas decorations. I find packing them up and putting them back up into the loft a chore though!

  13. The Christmas tree (made of just lights) in my backyard that only my neighbors and I can see. ~ j///b

  14. Thinking on this and I guess it would have to be the door wreath. It is one of the first and easiest things I can get up. I have given back many of my kids decorations for their own trees and memories.

  15. sonny -- Here is a picture of the snowman my mother made for me. It is basically two Styrofoam balls and she made the hat out of cereal box cardboard and the face, etc. with cut out felt plus the base is a jar lid wrapped in black felt. You probably can't click on the link but if you can't you can cut and paste the link in your browser.

I have to imagine that it is difficult for you to part with any kind of decorations because you put heart and soul into all of yours.
    Yep, see you next year!

Rae -- You are right about those decorations. I love what my children made and the ones my grandchildren have made. My son hammered bottle caps into a piece of wood that he painted yellow and blue and gave it to me. It was a car. I put it out every year.

Chatty Crone -- I love our little tree with lights also. This year the lights burned out after years and years and I was so sad. My brother and sil arrived and in their bag of Christmas goodies there was a string of lights. They had no idea that I needed lights and my sil said she had been amazed that my brother put such a strange item in the basket. Isn't that cool?

Marilyn -- I love passing on treasures to my children and they do appreciate them so much, but I know how hard it will be for you to give up that red rocking chair.

Cliff -- I love my decorations but I also love to put then away immediately after Christmas. My mom was the same way. After dad died she wouldn't have put up decorations at all if my sister hadn't done it for her. I am glad you like Marilyn's villages. Those are probably something that could be left out all year as art.

Kay -- That is my feeling too. I like a tree full of memories.

  16. I think my favorite is that big ole camel and wise man that I bought at a yardsale. And today I got everything down and back up into the attic!

  17. I miss the lights the most - they make the inside so much nicer during the long winter nights.

Wishing you and Ron and your family a beautiful and blessed 2012, Annie!

  18. Lights, definitely, although we did not get around to digging them out of the box this year. Happy New Year!

  19. Seriously Though – That tree sounds very artistic. You hubster must be creative and a picture of the tree would be a nice item to share on your blog.

Lynn – I too love being greeted by outside Christmas lights when we arrive home in the evening from a day out. My daughter has my antique doll that have been given to me by a special relative. She always keeps in it a place of honor in her home. I loved the doll but it did frightened me sometimes because it had very tiny, authentic looking teeth.

Kitty Moore – I enjoy our little tree every year but it is artificial. “Geenage” goes wanting around me also. You know I do miss the smell of a real tree and wreaths at Christmas time and I just realized I didn’t smell any pine this year anywhere. I wish you a great 2012.

Changes in the wind – I’m not sure what tube lights are. We do see some kind of lights that people are starting to leave on their homes all year around and they only turn them on at Christmas. I’m not sure that I like seeing those quiet lights just waiting. Lights around the front door would be wonderful and I can see how you would miss those.

LL Cool Joe – That is hard to believe. Your decorations were definitely works of art and how you could keep from missing them is beyond me. Especially those packages that had your daughter in such a huff. LOL

LZ Blogger – Slip a picture of your secret light tree in your next group of park visit pictures. Now that would draw some attention. Your neighbors must appreciate you putting lights a tree up for them:)

Tabor – It just dawned on me that the door wreath is so easy to put up. Good point Tabor. My kids have also taken many of our old family decorations for their homes. I love to go there and see those memories on display.

Ancient one – A big ole camel that you bought at a yardsale? I think you must post a picture of him. He sounds like a charming fellow and the wiseman with him is probably equally delightful. I would consider that a rare and treasured find.

Talon – Lights twinkling and soft Christmas music playing. Yes! Wishing you a wonderful 2012 also.

Riot Kitty – No cards out, no tree or lights this year? Slow down my friend and stop to smell the roses…or Christmas candles. Happy New year to you and yours!

  20. My maternal grandmother, Nanny's ceramic Christmas Angel collection. I don't have a mantle to put them on here, just a shelf. Some are dancing or have instruments. They are a treasure that spends so much time packed away.

    Happy New Year to you!

  21. Snaggle Tooth -- Doesn't it seem that we should leave some things out like that angel collection? Oh they sound lovely. I actually have a cast iron trivet with a ceramic tile that has a painted Christmas tree on it. It was my last gift from my best friend before her death in 1990 and I keep it out all the time.

  22. I have not regularly decorated my home for the holidays, but a woman I work with brought in a Christmas wreath that was handmade by her mother (who has long since passed away). The wreath is hanging on her office door. It's faded and bits of it are falling off and unravelling, but she loves it anyway. I feel badly because I have accidentally backed into it at least 3 times in the past two weeks; it sticks out from the door quite far. It's so bedraggled that I can't tell if I've damaged it further, but I always apologize profusely. The wreath owner doesn't mind - she just wants to have it there.

  23. Sparkling Red -- Here is a suggestion. Take a picture of her wreath while it still has some substance and then make the picture into a poster to hang on her door. This way she can display her mother's lovely work while keeping it safe at home. Also it keeps others safe from feeling guilty if they accidentally damage it.

  24. I always miss the tree; filled as it is with my favorite ornaments (many of them are frogs.) Happy New Year!!

  25. It was a X-mas tree ornament in the shape of a little peacock with a white tail. The tail was really soft and I love to brush it against my cheek when I was a little girl.

  26. It has to be the crib scene. I never tire of looking at it and one of these days I'll get them a decent stable instead of an old cigar box.

  27. Lights on the tree. Definitely lights. I'm wondering how to talk the sane half into adding a real tree for year round lights. Hmmm....maybe artificial.....yeah that will work :)
