For most things a text will do, but I do appreciate a conversation with friends I haven't seen in a while or my siblings. As for my children--I might not even recognize their voices if they actually called!
Family and friends normally text us, but we do get periodic calls from our kids making sure we're alright. We no longer have a landline - too many prank/bothersome calls.
We go with text, our phone is off. We got tired of politicians, robocalls and spoofed numbers.

Don't have a cell signal here so landline phone call is only option.
