HAND ME DOWN MY WALKING STICK

I had a visitor on my front door. Big fellow and almost didn't recognize him as a bug. Click the link under the photo to read about these Walking Stick bugs.

Meanwhile while researching Walking Stick bugs, I came across Leon Redbone on YouTube singing HAND ME DOWN MY WALKING STICK.  I LOVE LEON REDBONE.

  1. I thought we had every bug in the world, but I've never seen this one. I thought for a minute it was a praying mantis, but they eat bugs.

  2. I've always been intrigued by walking sticks. I've only seen a couple, and definitely out in the wilderness, not at my front door! :o

  3. Those are so neat n not as scary as the praying Mantis I think. Thanks for the tune.

  4. Mantises and Walking sticks and dragon flies (or Mosquito Hawks, as my mother would say) I love them all!

  5. We used to sell walking sticks (the bugs) in the feed store. There was an older gentleman that raised them for us. Kinda cool creatures, and know how to hide.

  6. They are new to me - and I love that you featured this big boy.

  7. We don't have walking sticks here but when my son was small I let him get a praying mantis egg sack. They were supposed to hatch in an aquarium. Supposed to. There was a tiny crack and they got out. Baby praying mantises! Everywhere! It was awesome.

    Thanks for the picture.

  8. I love how the Internet drags us from one serendipity link to another as we research something totally unrelated. Walking sticks are hard to find!

  9. Oh my goodness. Never seen one of these before.

  10. Aaaaack!! I click over from Joey's to read about your lawnmower and this is what I see?? I hate walking sticks!! They totally creep me out!

At least your photo of the pups begging made up for it. I remembered National Dog Day and tweeted a photo of all nine of mine, along with their names! :)

  11. I have always been leery of them as I heard they could spit an irritating substance at you. Old wives swear they could blind a person. The link you provided gave a less frightening version of their spitting techniques. Glad you weren't spit upon.

  12. Oh wow, that looks like a very large bug. I don't think I've seen one in person before...

  13. I haven't seen a Walking Stick in ages. I had no idea they spit!

  14. I've not seen one of those in ages...and I've not heard Leon Redbone in ages, either. Love it! :)

  16. How unusual! I thought it was a praying mantis at first.

  17. Is it the same stick insect we have here in Australia I wonder? I have praying mantises around my yard but haven't seen any for a while. They hide in the winter. Now the spring is here I hope to see them again.
I'd never heard of Leon Redbone before today.

  18. We do get stick insects here in the UK, but I've never seen one in the wild, only as pets. Why the hell anyone would want one as a pet I have no idea!

  19. I've seen them in books, never in real life and, certainly, one has never come to my door. My condolences.
