THE SKULLS

Question Of The Week 4-4-16

Do you recall a troubling incident from your childhood that happened to you or that you witnessed involving someone else?

Walking home from the show one evening in our small town a gang of high school girls who called themselves The Skulls stopped and offered me and my friend a ride.  We refused and they started getting out of their car in their scary black leather jackets acting like they would pull us into the car.  We had heard horrible things about them and things they did to junior high kids. We were not far from my house and ran there in terror.  We simply were glad to arrive home safely and didn't even tell my parents what had happened.  Later we learned they had picked up another kid, took him to an old bridge outside of town  and pulled off all  his fingernails.

  1. Just one particular troubling incident I remember that happened with one of my parents - something I witnessed, best left not written about, but it sprang to mind.

Oh my - your incident sounds terrifying! I'm so glad you got away like that.

  2. Yes, I remember walking home from school at about 8 years of age when a strange car stopped beside me, the old man smiled and greeted me and then threw candy across the front seat and offered me some, and I ran like crazy for home. So glad I did.

  3. The Skulls sound like they need a harsh dose of law enforcement. I hope they got their lives turned around.

  4. My father died when I was 9 - it was one of the most frightening and defining times of my life. Goodness - glad you still have your fingernails!

  5. When I was maybe six or so my parents and I were in line to see a movie and a man we didn't know grabbed me. My Dad jumped into action and my Mom rushed me inside. I really don't know what my Dad did to the man other than stop him.

  6. Yes, I was involved in a very troubling incident as a very young child. So young that it's one of my earliest memories. Since it was very out of character and gives a very false impression of the other people involved, I choose not to speak about it publicly.

  7. I have two near drowning incident in my life. My grandfather and his driver witnessed the first one when I was about three. My grandfather lost it and luckily the driver pulled me out of the water and saved my life. The second one happened when I was about eight and I didn't wait for my dad to come out of the changing room. I jumped into the deep end of pool and I hit bottom but was able to flap my arms up to the surface. I've always been headstrong and disobeying men has been a hallmark of my life.

You and your friend were wise not to get into the car with the Skulls. I grew up in Manhattan and I thought the swirlies we heard about were bad. I got into a lot of fights, but I avoided gangs like the plague.

  8. I am so glad you escaped.
Walking home from a friends place (a couple of miles) I kept seeing the same car driving by slowly. When I had seen it five or six times I got anxious. A few blocks from home it stopped and the driver got out and started to walk towards me. I ran to the nearest house and hammered on their front door. The driver ran to his car and sped off. I am glad I escaped too.

  9. So glad you ran and so sorry for that poor kid that didn't. What a horrid group. I had something happen when I was three that I still am not comfortable talking about.

  10. What a mean, bullying group. I have to wonder what makes kids turn that way.

  11. Oh my gosh! That is so horrifying! No... I can't remember anything like that happening, but right now I'm just thinking about that poor child.

  12. Ouch! That would've hurt! I hope those girls ended up getting their just desserts! And I don't mean bowls of strawberries and cream!

I remember a few harrowing times from my childhood...but I won't go into them now.

  13. On December 4, 2001, Lois Nadean Smith, age 61, was executed by lethal injection in Oklahoma for an offense of murder committed when she was 41. (I think she stabbed her son-in-law to death.) She was the leader of The Skulls that stopped us and wanted us to get in the car in 1957. She was only the 8th woman executed in the United States and I think only the 3rd in Oklahoma.

  14. Your story and last comment gave me chills. I wasn't expecting something so terrifying. You were smart and lucky!

When I about five or six, I was alone on my bike in front of my house, which was on a busy street, and a man in a green Chevy parked a few doors down from my house got out of his car but stayed near the driver's side and was waving for me to come over to him. He was smiling and a little anxious, like he wanted to tell me something important. I remember thinking it would be rude to ignore him because he was an adult (I was raised to listen to adults) but my instincts told me to leave my bike and head in the house. A few days later the cops knocked on our door and showed a photo of the man to my mother asking if she'd seen him. I shook my head yes, but my English wasn't good (and neither was my mother's), so we weren't much help. I forgot what happened to him but it creeped me the hell out.

  15. your incident beats any of mine! The issues i had with older kids were simply resolved - i would run into a large patch of poison ivy (i am immune) and they would leave me be.

  16. First I want to say how happy I am that you and your friend got away~!

M experience involved our milkman, back in the day when folks gave them a key to deliver our milk , ice cream and such- right to the refridgerator...

I was a bold child - sick and alone at home that day-9 years old:(- and when he came near me: I'll leave off the details:: I screamed bloodly murder to the point that our neighbor lady came running to check on me.. He of course said he'd done nothing and I was just overly dramatic. I told my parents when they got home and we stopped having milk delivered immediatly. I've thought many times- what if it had'nt been warm weather- what if both ours and our neighbors windows had'nt been open to let in a breeze..
I've never again been without the largest sharpest butcher knife in the house with me at all times. and YES I would have use it with no remorse whatsoever.. I still keep a hunting knife right in my desk and one in my bedroom drawer..
9 years later he was arrested for molesting over 20 children and was sentenced to 15 years in prison.. I can still see his face clearly.:(

I told my kids if anyone even acted like they were going to mess with them, to scream and not stop and fight for all the were worth. luckily they never had too.

  17. Like many of us I had a happening as a small child. The odd thing was I had totally blocked it out of my mind and only in the last couple of years did it come back to me as I was writing 'An Imperfect Life' and visualising my home country- side. After much thought I decided to mention it and - from the reaction from some readers - am glad I did.

  18. Yikes! what a trauma to think about -

My mother didn't believe me when I walked back from going to the school at the corner, that it had burned down, n had to go see herself.

I grew up in the city n had alot of chases getting away from weirdos too -

Good comments here to think about hoe lucky we have been.

I walked to school where Jeffrey Curly dissappeared decades later!
