CHERRY TREE SAGA

One of the highlights of our new home.
Lo and behold we actually had cherries.
Hope's favorite refuge on her visits.
The grandchildren would pick the cherries.
Pitting them was not their favorite job.
They did a good job and kept an eye on granny who got mixed up a lot.
Barely time to photograph before it was gone.
This granny was pleased to make her grandchildren happy for their labors,.
Dixie was Hope's goat and sadly lost her one kid. Chocolate Chip's memorial stone was placed under the cherry tree.
The drought last year did the first work on the generous tree and this year's freeze did the rest.
The remains of the day:(

  1. Dear lord, that was depressing. NOT FAIR! Well, get thee to the store and buy three more this year...then you will have more cherry pies to share.

It is so sad except during the life of the tree it sure made some happy memories. The previous year we lost our seven little paper shell pecan trees to the two year drought.

  3. Oh no!!! I'm so sad for you that happened, but I do love the tribute you have written today. And its cherries looked so good.

Aw, too bad about the demise of that wonderful tree. But, what great memories!

  5. And so goes the bittersweet cycle of life. We have a friend with a large cherry orchard, and b/c the trees have a rather short life they must re-plant every few years.

This was a sad post, but I am glad you have these really wonderful photo memories of your cherry tree, and hope that you have a fireplace so that it can warm your heart one more time.

  6. That is a sad end to a giving tree, but it is all part of the cycle. Your grandchildren will keep the memory (and probably be glad not to have to do the pitting.)

  7. That's really sad. We had a beautiful tree that died last year and it's horrible to see. Death, even in the plant world is tragic.

  8. Awww. I am so sorry that you lost that beautiful tree - and very glad that the memories are still alive.
Another one? They are beautiful, and productive, and...

  9. Awww! That's so heartbreaking, Annie. I guess the one good thing is all the amazing memories and eats of the lovely tree.

  10. You lost a friend, but there are still great memories.
Liz, it was so nice to hear from you. It would be great to see you at JKPP. Don't you miss drawing?
    Love, Jutta

  13. Oh my God. I could choke.
It is heart breaking when a tree goes down like that. I guess you can always buy new trees and grow them like Tabor says.

The cherries were delicious. The first year I did not get there in time and the birds got them all.

Memories also can be delicious can't they?

    Kerry
I have a fake fireplace so won't get to burn the cherry wood there but neighbors always are willing to take off my downed trees.

    Olga
You are so right about the grandchildren not missing the pitting part. lol

We have had such an awful drought the past two years that we lost more trees than we wanted. But there is even blessing in the fact that we did not lose more.

    Elephant's Child
I have been invited to participate in a county tree study and for completing their survey I will get to select a few young trees. I hope they might be cherry trees.

Doesn't it just break your heart. But the memories are amazing and I can still bake a cherry cobbler.

So happy to hear from you. It is thrilling to see the wonderful portraits you are doing. Yes, I miss drawing but cannot bring myself to pick up pen or pencil yet. Maybe soon. My grandson was here over Christmas and was most encouraging for me to do some more. His work is phenomenal.

    Sonny
Wouldn't that just be delightful. Actually I do want to have a catalpa tree planting party for Ron's memory someday. Guess we could plant a cherry tree then too.

    Arkansas Patti
Yes it did provide wonderful memories. However I can't help but think how happy Ron would be to not have to mow around it. I probably won't miss that either next summer.

We never like to lose a tree and have not cut one healthy tree on our property. The dead trees that have to come down are given to neighbors to use themselves for firewood or they can sell it for firewood.

  15. Oh, no - and such a giving tree, too!

  16. Lovely greenery and vegetation. the cherries look so succulent. The kids seem to be having a great time. Always one feels sad to lose a true.

  17. Sorry about your Special Cherry tree- Tough to lose them with sentiments attached. It happened to me where I buried my 2 20-yr old cats because my landlord suddenly decided to kill the black Birch tree without informing me first.
Perhaps you'll get another as a gift sometime-
At least you gave the kids a lovely memory of you every time they see fresh cherries...

  18. Every time I click on your name and reach your profile page and see that picture of you smiling and think about your blog posts, I say to myself "I bet you she's the nicest person I've never met!"

I hope I'm as good as a grandmother as you are when it's my turn!

    It was a giving tree:)

    Ram
The cherries were very succulent and if not picked at the right time, a bit tart. Yes, sad.

    Snaggle Tooth
I hope fresh cherries will often make the grandchildren think of me but they may think of their grandpa instead who had a stem of cherries tattooed on his leg that said "I'll show you mine if you'll show me yours." Oh dear, he had been a naughty sailor and try explaining that to your grandchildren.

As wonderful a mother as you are to Baby C, you will be twice as wonderful a grandmother. Your own mother is a treasure. I am delighted with your kind words.

  20. Oh! I'm sorry, that sucks. I lost several plants because of the weather here, but it's not the same.

  21. Dang, that is depressing! I hate to lose a tree. Hope you replant. Have you thought about a fruit cocktail tree as well as the cherry?

  24. that is sad, but trees can be replaced and they grow quick enough. Glad you enjoyed it while you could

  25. It was Kerry who mentioned it first... the cycle of life. Bittersweet indeed.

  26. Awww... Annie. I'm so sorry. That's such a shame. We have a cherry tree in Illinois too. I'm hoping it survived the record cold temperatures. I guess we'll find out this coming spring. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Now I have The Circle Of. Life (from the Lion King) in my head. Sorry about your tree loss, but what joy it brought you while it was here!!

  28. Hi,
    How are you doing?
Fishducky thinks that you should be in Politics. My family loves your comments and your blog posts. How are the Hens and the Roosters doing?
    Take care of yourself.

  29. Poor old tree. The trees in my area took a beating in the ice storm. I feel sad for them and hope that they don't feel pain like people do.

  30. There is a whole lot of heavenly memories. Never say a tree has died until a year has passed. Meanwhile might as well buy another one:)
