WHAT'S GOING ON

The tree outside my kitchen window.
Rooster Chicklet waking up to a new day.
Nancy (looking up)  and unnamed siblings with Mama David and Aunt Boomer.
Elizabeth and Slim having a serious discussion.
Goodnight Moon
USING THE ABOVE PICTURES, WHAT  STORY COULD YOU TELL?

THE ACTUAL STORY:
I was greeted by these early morning sounds: A constant and high-pitched noise coming from the tip-top of this tree; The sound of a rooster crowing loudly coming from the hen house.

Rooster Chicklet was awake announcing the night's hen house invasion. An unknown predator had slithered, crawled or flown in during the night and wiped out all the eggs in the nests including some that had almost hatched under Mr. Gibson. Mr. Gibson did manage to save two of her new healthy chicks.

Pursuit of discovering the tree commotion was next. It was kitten Nancy in distress. By the time I was in a hysterical state of worry pondering how to get Nancy out of the tree, she made it down on her own and sprinted to the breakfast table. She seemed to be asking me, "What's the big deal?" as I applauded her safety.

Meanwhile, Slim had a little Te-ta-Te with the goats and made sure Elizabeth remembered who was really in charge around here. Elizabeth abandoned the argument with Slim and proceeded to bully her sister Polly.

By nightfall I was able to see my dry and dying tree as beautiful again. It stood there in the dark, basking in moon glow. I went to bed without thinking about how much shorter that stately tree's life is going to be unless we get some rain soon.

  1. Life on a farm is good, but hard work too and you sleep well at night.

  2. You hate animals ;)

Just kidding. Did you ever read a book called, "Click, clack, moo"? It's about cows forming a union. For some reason that just popped into my head.

  3. That you must be damn busy!!

  4. It tells the story of your beautiful life - surrounded by tall trees, farmlife, working kitties (with great names), a good dog who keeps the animals in check and a beautiful moon over Oklahoma. Lovely.

  5. This has been quite a night. I wrote a nice but lengthy column last night. The lights started flickering (I suppose high demand was the problem) and I lost my whole column. My center pivots all quit when the lights blink so I had to restart them several times.
I also wrote a lengthy story about your goat and dog fighting over the tree and about how the sun got stuck in it and burned it to the ground and how the cats were so happy that peace and harmony were once again the norm...and I lost it too. So I quit. I'm mad. I'll get over it. Just leave me alone for a while. (or at least until tomorrow.

  6. P.S. we also had a storm pass through the area last night but it didn't rain on us. That's what really has me ready to punch something. (but I can't punch anymore because my shoulder will hurt too much because I'm old and falling apart.)

  7. Chatty Crone -- It is good:)

Riot Kitty -- Believe it or not, I've always thought that cows form gangs.

LL Cool Joe -- And to think it's basically a hobby.

    Lynn -- The End.

Cliff -- Well it sounds like it was going to be a good story. Especially about the sun getting stuck in the tree. That is exactly what is happening as this tree is trying to hold it's own until the next (if ever) rain.
I am angry for you too about the fake storm. We even hear thunder roll and the weatherman says "possible rain" and nothing...absolutely nothing.
Read Ralph's post and you might find yourself going after a dish washer with an ax to ease your tension.

  8. A rooster, a cat and a goat walked into a bar.......oops, I'd better not go there, but I do like seeing the pics from what is going on in your life.

  9. Well I don't think I could top Cliff's story, even though we didn't get to read the whole thing. I think we should petition him to do it again and post it.

Why is Nancy the only kitten sibling with a name?

  10. read Jeannie's comment- snort giggle snort.. now I cant think of the story I was gonna write about those pictures.. snort again LOL....

    I'll be BACK~!

  11. I'd blame it all on global warming except I don't believe in it.

  12. that Buycott Spam is ahead of me everywhere! yikes go away...

The sultry summer heat turned the oaks crispy, roasting marchmallows. Chicklet thought it was the sun rising. But he was too hot to crow, n decided to wait until after brunch. He doesn't eat marshmallows, or even like the thought of crispy. Not one little peck of it.
Nancy was curious enough for all the other scaredy cats, who couldn't bear to look at the chickens. She wanted uncooked marshmallows- to chase n play with. They bounce puffily. David n Boomer we too busy stuffing down kibble to even hear what Chicklet said about crispy.
But Slim heard it all the way outside, n started argueing with Elizabeth who said crispy leaves were her absolute favorite.
    "No- crispy Marshmallows! Barked Slim.
"Did we say we were going to share our marshmallos? whispered the green oak to the orange one.
"but we ate them all already- don't tell anyone!" he said. "Hush! Maybe they'll have such sweet dreams, they'll forget all about it by tomorrow... Hide the empty bag"
    zzzz...zzzz....zzzzz

  13. I always comment without reading the others first- then read them, btw. Such similar tales! Poor Cliff!

  14. Jeanie -- Oh and I'm sure Slim was going to be the bouncer in that bar. That's a hoot of a great story going there!

Pat -- Yes, it would be great to actually read Cliff's first story. I'm open to suggestions for names of the other two kittens. Got any ideas?

Sonny -- Or should I call you "Arnold" because of yoru "I'll be back" comment. Yes Jeanie is quite funny. ditto "snort, giggle, snort"

Ralph -- Perfect! Yep every turn these days is attributed to Global Warming.

Snaggle Tooth -- Good accounting of the adventures at NOL-NOC Estates. Wonder how you knew my chickens love marshmallows? And, the goats prefer crispy leaves?

  16. It's hard to water a big tree.
To get a cat out of a dying tree seems like work for a chainsaw.
Usually to get cats down is easy. They always come down. Sometimes they're still alive.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Cliff -- We have so many trees and we have many missing cats. Hum, wonder if that's where the "raining cats..." comes from. Speaking of "rain" we got some last night. Big downpour for about five minutes then thunder and lightning all night but no more rain. Barely affected the temps.

  18. If I felt better today I could really kick out a fun tale for those pics. Adorable photos and what a sweet life on your farm.

  19. Annie,

This is my favorite kind of story I love to hear from you.

About Slim claiming her rights as Mistress of the farm and Mr Gibson protecting her eggs and Chicklet being the Town Crier shouting out the news.

I just adore little Nancy. I would give anything to pet her. If you don't get a better suggestion for names of Nancy's sibs, maybe you can call them after my two real sibs, Jed and Bob.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Nancy -- Consider it done. To Nancy's left is Bob and to her right is Jed. Send the announcement to your brothers:) It has been a long time since we've had a "Bob cat" in the family and there is another story there for another time.

  21. Marla and Steve -- Marla come back anytime and tell you tale of our livestock. Meanwhile I'm waving my magic wand with healing thought in your direction.

  22. enjoyed your photos...

  23. It'd be nice to have your life for a day. It's not always peaceful but it would be a sweet and beautiful change. I'll take animal drama before human drama any day. :)

  24. ashok --Thanks!

Scarlet -- The animal drama today consisted of me attempting to unload 50 lb feed sacks and dump the feed in barrels with seven goats trying to help. Not an event I ever pictured when sitting behind my desk at the bank.

  25. Annie,

Thanks a lot for naming the kitties after my real sibs.

Jed is my Sister who lives in New York City. Real name Geraldine but shortened to Jed when she was a baby.

Sadly, my brother,Bob, is no longer with us but Bobcat will give me a warm reminder of him whenever I see him with Nancy,Jed Aunt Boomer and Mama David. What a wonderful feline family.

  26. Very kewl story. The highlight of what is sure to be a potentially dull weekend (at least for me).

  27. I'll be doing a little rain dance for you. Down here near Houston, we lost more trees in last year's drought than we do in a major hurricane. But this year has been better for us.

  28. Hey, Granny Annie, please email me. Your email link isn't working for me because I don't have a Yahoo or Gmail account. Email me at grandparents.guide@about.com. Thanks!

  29. I certainly hope you get some good rains soon. It sounds so exciting to live on a farm. It really keeps you busy, doesn't it?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Nancy -- I am still not positive about the sex of each kitten. I was sure Nancy was a boy and now I think they area all three girls. Getting a feral cat to hold still for long is quite a problem. Bob and Jed are both marbled and very beautiful/handsome...as is Nancy, of course:)

G.B. Miller -- Nothing better than having something designated as "kewl". Thanks.

Susan Adcox -- Looks like your rain dance worked. We've got lots of rain and storms. It is not supposed to last and the heat is expected to return quickly, so don't stop dancing:)

Kay -- It not only keeps me busy, it keeps me on the brink of heat stroke. LOL

  32. Pat -- We are starting to get some cooler temps and a bit of rain so there is hope for the tree yet.
