QOTW 01-23-12 TEACHING CREATES

Question Of The Week 01-23-12

If you had to teach something, what would you teach?

  1. Well I'm a qualified art teacher, but I'm very rusty, but if I were to teach, it would be art.

  2. As a frustrated director I would teach drama. Surprised?

  3. I'll say the first thing that popped into my head - literature. But I'm not qualified to teach that. :)

  4. This is easy for me. It would be communication and marketing. There are so many mistakes made by inexperienced businessmen that it is astounding. I see it too often on the national level as well. They'll run a national ad for 3 weeks and then take out 5 seconds of the ad that I could have told them should have been taken out the first time I viewed it. I'm always telling Marilyn, "If I'd been chairman of the board when the marketing team rolled that out I'd have a shook my head and quietly said, go try again." "You're not running that for my company."

  5. LL Cool Joe -- Art teacher sounds right for you. By the way, I loved that jigsaw puzzle in your Meme today.

Tabor -- You are right. I would have guessed photography teacher instead. Just goes to show how much we don't know. LOL Your newly painted bedroom looks so beautiful. Also I too love Downton Abbey and if you had not blogged about it a few days ago I would not have known it was back. I managed to record the re-run of the first in the new season and the next two. I love it bunches.

Lynn -- The question is "If you HAD to teach" and if you had to, then you could teach literature. I am still envious of your beautiful fern on your post of good things today.

Cliff -- Sounds like you were more than prepared for this question. You jumped right in with both feet and conquered the ills of the marketing world. You just might get a call for teaching service. I am still marveling over the multitude of bowl games in your last post. Is there really a "Belk Bowl" and a "Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl"? Let us know when you learn of the "Allis Chalmers Tractor Bowl".

  6. Hi Annie,

Here I am, back again. Just when you thought it was safe to look at your comments..

I am not really qualified to teach anyone anything but sometimes I can't resist giving a tip or two to young mothers I see making huge mistakes in the treatment of their children in stores and other places.

It makes me cringe to hear one of them say to her young child,"You are so bad.I don't know what I'm going to do with you." That's when I would like to say "You are giving him a reputation of being bad that he will have to live up to. Why don't you tell him every day what a good boy he is?" Then he would have to live up to being good. And if he does something bad you should say," I am surprised that such a good boy did such a bad thing,"

I think they would see a real improvement in any kid's behavior if they thought they would get their parent's approval and attention by being good. That's what all kid's crave. Attention and approval from their Mom and Dad.

So, I guess I would love to teach a class in early childhood behavior to PARENTS.

  7. Why Spanish, of course, and I'd start with all the colorful stuff, of course.

  8. I LOVE teaching students. That's what I teach...children. The subject matter that I handle is mathematics. I share the love of math with 7th graders. Guess how far that goes? Ha! Some days it's absolutely wonderful & some days it's just ummm... But I still, no matter what's going on in education that makes me sad, LOVE TEACHING 7th GRADERS math.

  9. Since I am most familiar with it and I used to teach it, it would be something related to medicine/nursing. I taught nursing classes when I was actively practicing and I enjoyed it a lot.

  10. Nancy -- So happy you are able to comment again. The course you wish to teach sounds like one a lot of people could use. I agree that our children need to know their behavior is what is being criticized and not the type of child they are. When can we look for another submission from you in the Elder Storytelling Placer?

Scarlet -- Muy Bueno:) I personally have a lot to learn so that I might better communicate with my wonderful Guatemalan housekeeper. She appreciates my using google translate to write notes to her in Spanish. After reading your blog post today I am thinking you might also make a good teacher on the subject of Cuban refugees and their reasons for leaving Cuba.

Debbie -- Debbie, It is wonderful that you would want to do what you already do. What if you were not allowed to teach math to children. What would be your second choice? That's what I call a fly in the ointment:) Your blog reveals your dedication to being a teacher.

Rae -- I will sign up for your medical class. Your class would be most entertaining if you told stories like the one on your blog today about Karma. LOL

  12. I would teach psychology. What about you? sandie

  13. I would be sure to teach kids.I'm not being a smart ass as I taught for 37 years and the most important thing was the kids.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I taught children grades K-8 for over 20 years. I like teaching 3rd and 4th graders best.

  15. I have volunteered both as a writing and ESL teacher for adults. I loved ESL the most.

  16. Nancy -- Yes I will mark my calendar and will read on Friday. Know it will be a goodd one...as usual.

Chatty Crone -- You are on such a good track to happiness that I am afraid if you taught psychology it would make you sad. You always put the question back to me. I believe I would make every effort to teach victim awareness and encourage students to pay more attention to victims and families of victims of violent crime (or any level of crime for that matter) and less attention the the perpetrators. Oh my goodness the tortellini soup on your post today sounds absolutely wonderful.

Red -- Is it possible you are sometimes called "a smart ass"? I guess if you were a teacher for 37 years that could have happened a lot. LOL It was great to discover your blog after this visit. I am always looking for good book recommendations and I cannot believe you have never read TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD. You absolutely MUST do that right away. You tender story of keeping your sister Doreen's memory truly moved me. We all must keep the memories of loved ones as their legacy.

Charlotte -- What subject would you select to teach these 3rd and 4th graders if you had to pick one topic for them? I always found that 4th graders were the most fun to teach. Loved your farm signs. Also want to know if there was really any time left for Don to do what he wanted after completing the "honey do" list. Poor Don! If you posted a sign for him, what would it read?

Riot Kitty -- I must assume that ESL means English as a Second Language. Yes, I can see how that would be extremely satisfying especially for an adult audience eager to learn. It would just be a guess on my part but I believe I know the first word you would teach them:) Here is hint for others reading your post today. Go to google first and research Wensleydale in order to qualify for the "brotherhood".

  17. In my younger days I thought about becoming a teacher.

In my olders days, if I was a teacher, I would teach personal responsibility.

A skill that is sorely lacking in today's world and especially in the guv'ment, be it on the local, state (where I work) or on the federal level.

    ReplyDelete
  18. G -- Yes, someone needs to teach that class. Do you read Riot Kitty? She goes that same direction in her post today. My visit to your Cedar Mountain post from Sunday was very exciting. To think you actually got feedback on your novel from the prospective publisher was great...and also unheard of. Very promising indeed.

  19. Everyone seems to be concerned if they're officially qualified...

Tho I'm not prob qualified I'd like to teach some ethics to the rude folks around me where I work...

I suppose I know enough with my degree to teach painting, sculpture, n visual design.

While in High School I did teach Folk Dancing to people outside school, n Guitar class at school.
The fun part of that was there were the left-handed students- One had a reverse strung guitar (strings up-sidedown) n another had the guitar flipped direction- both of which I first had to do myself to teach! I'll never forget that.... At the end of the school year, we had to do a show for the whole school. It can be a high pressure job, for sure!

  20. Snaggle Tooth -- Why should people be ethical when the nation's stage is covered with the most unethical examples in the world? Teaching ethics would be quite an undertaking. I am sure you could do it though I do see your calling in the field of art music visual communications.

You are getting some lovely snow shots these days for your blog.

  21. I would teach healthy confrontational skills, so that people could have productive arguments instead of doing the "hit and run", the "record-breaking grudge-hold", or the "passive-aggressive revenge".

  22. Teaching has been my drem job. I have some credits in teaching from India but New York State wants me to get sixty credits more. I am almost at a retirement age and I think the cost of going back to school will not justified.
If I could teach, I would teach tolereance, kindness, love and sincere hard work will bring happiness that a lot of worldly goods would not.

  23. I have taught adult literacy and loved it. And I've taught art. I think, if I had to teach anything these days, it would be about common sense life skills.

    ReplyDelete
  24. G.A.:

Yes, I've been reading R.K.'s blog for a couple of years now (I think), and she does have that unique outlook on life.

Thanks for the compliment. Like I said on Sunday, it was the first time I've gotten feedback on anything, and the entire e-mail to me suggested very strongly that they would be open to re-considering my novel after I do a bit more editing.

  25. I was a teacher. I taught 1st graders for 19 years. But what would I teach? Hmmm.... How about how to write thank you notes. :-) I'm trying to nudge my nephews to learn how.

  26. I was a high school English teacher, but mostly I taught literature. What I loved about it is that everything in the world relates to literature. There is nothing you can't talk about. That's also what I like about my grandparents website. It's about grandparents and grandchildren, but I can also write about health issues, games, sports, books, travel and almost anything else that you can name.
