Do you recall a time when you were persuaded or coerced by a friend, family member or employer to do something under false pretenses?

  1. There's a distant memory of something like that when I was really young - someone wanted me to give a job reference for a position in our company they didn't really do. (She no longer worked there and had moved to California.) She ended up getting a job she wasn't qualified for and lasted only days. I'm not friends with her anymore. A real friend wouldn't ask you to do something like that. And I grew up. :)

  2. Yes, when I was a teenager or in my early twenties. And somehow it always backfired at me... (I lost friends and even a job because of it). That was a good way to stop this kind of "helping".

  3. No I don't, I'm not saying I haven't, but I don't remember anyone else persuading me to do it. I'm pretty good at lying on my own.

  4. Lynn -- You pegged that one right. A "real friend" would never do such a thing -- unless they were throwing a surprise party for you and had to lure you away with a fake story:)

Holland -- Sounds like you and I had similar events occur. I lost a job over my deal too. I totally fell for false promises. The biggest difference was that I was in my forties at the time and should have known better.

LL Cool Joe -- So you don't remember being persuaded...does that mean you might be the persuader? Just kidding...

  6. I sure remember a lot of times I was asked to. Honestly if I did (and I'm pretty sure somewhere along the way I did) I don't remember it.

  7. Once, back when I was in high school ('79-'83). I was persuaded by a classmate to ring something up for him at less than the full price. I sort of did it, which meant that I dropped the price by only a dollar or so. He wound up not getting it, I wound up having a voided sale and fortunately I had a supervisor who was very understanding and easy to get along with.

    Other than that, nada.

  8. The only thing I can think of is fishing around to see who liked who in jr. high under false pretenses. :)

  11. I've known many pushy n bossy folks, but always fought against getting talked into unethical lying, cheating, or stealing.

Employers tho do encourage lying about being sick instead of saying true reasons for calling in to avoid getting fired. So far I've never called in at my current job... Of course we get zero sick pay!

Then there was silly friend Ruthie acting "Special" or "French" for kicks in the market waiting line, wanting me to play along...

  12. LL Cool Joe – See, I knew you were a trouble maker:)

Ralph – Memory of convenience I see.

G – Why did we all want our working friends to give us a deal on prices? I will admit that I did try to coerce my friends to let me have free stuff.

Riot Kitty – Trying to persuade others to gossip is a required activity of our youth.

Shionge – Does that mean you were glad to stir up trouble when you could? LOL

Snaggle Tooth – Interesting point about the times we are set up to have to be unethical in the workplace by the bosses. Also my sister was big about putting on an act in public and often tried to get me to go along. Now I wish I would have because she always seemed to have so much fun and imagination.
