NOT SO SUPER SUPER 8

We carry a Super 8 Motel book when we travel. Overall our experiences with Super 8 have been good. The prices are reasonable, the rooms attractive and spacious, they offer Wi-Fi internet free, continental breakfast, etc. That is why this Texas Amarillo East Super 8 surprised us. Our room was in a basement, the outlets and wires were exposed, there were two peep holes in the door. One was at about 3ft from the floor and the other about 5ft. The light switches were all located about 3ft from the floor. The safety latch on the door was broken. (That wasn't very comforting). Also the toilet tank was set up wrong and appeared to be ready to topple over any second. Did we protest? Nope, we got our much needed rest and left at 4:30 the next morning. Obviously the room was designed for "little people" and I had to feel sorry for them because they obviously get less than royal treatment at this Super 8.

  3. Hi Annie,

Welcome home from me and Slim. We missed you; Slim more than me because at least I didn't get put in a kennel while you were gone...BUT, I did spend a week in a Super 8 one night in Wilcox, Arizona.

All rooms were booked as we drove in hungry and exhausted at 8:45 P.M. They said only the handicapped room was available and they would give it to us BUT if a handicapped person came in they would ask us to leave.. Can you imagine?

About 10 P.M. I went out to get a soda from the machine and when I came back I said to Roy," You better get up. Ironsides just drove in."

That was about 20 years ago and we are still laughing about it...

  4. Monica -- That's just how sleepy we were. Otherwise there is no way I could have slept under the fire hazard as well as the break in hazard from the broken lock.

Judy -- I know you would have gotten a full refund and probably a gift certificate for free nights at Super 8s.

Nancy -- I don't know how glad you are to see me but I can guarantee that Slim is stuck to me like glue. I can't believe we also stayed in the Super 8 in Willcox,AZ and the toliet backed up on us there. It was in the morning and close to check out so their only help was to direct us to the public restroom up front. I was ashamed to tell this story too because we might have to give up on Super 8's after this. Perhaps we should protest more but we would just rather get on our way.

  7. You haven't lived until you stay in a basement room in Vienna where you barely have room to turn around, the bed is hard, and you share the bathroom with 3 other units. When one of the occupants in the other unit gets 'tourista' (like food poisoning) the smell will drive you out to the street.

I always ask to see the room first. Last night, I asked to see the room at a nice looking hotel in Orlando. The bathroom consisted of a sink next to the toilet and a shower head in the ceiling.......you were supposed to shower while standing on the floor beside the toilet and sink! No doors. No tub. No divider. Honest!

We moved on to the next hotel.

But we once were traveling with Lucky, and no one would take him. It got LATE. We got so tired that we were ILL. Ended up in a shanty SO scary and filthy that even Lucky couldn't sleep. Joe and I stayed fully dressed and I used the gas station's bathroom next door.

If it every happens again, I'm sleeping in the car.
