We have our new baby. My nephew is the proud father of an 8 lb 5 oz boy. They named him after my dad, Owen. If you follow my blog, you know about Owen so just that name should give him a good start.
The baby is in trouble. He has SVT. He heart rate was 300 bpms. The medicine has reduced the heart rate but they have moved him to a children's medical center as a precautionary measure, leaving mommy alone. My nephew went with the baby. These kids are scared to death for their precious new child.
Have you heard of SVT in newborns? Do you know good stories? If so, please share them. Also, your thoughts, wishes and prayers will be greatly appreciated.
The story of Little Owen at the Elder Storytelling Place
I could be wrong but I believe just the other night there was a story on the tv about a baby that was born in New Orleans the night of Gustav's hitting the area----seems that baby had a fast heartbeat, but the news implied over time this would self correct, I have no more information on it.
ReplyDeleteAnnie, what does SVT stand for? I haven't heard of this illness and I am so sorry that your "Little Owen" has to go thru this. I'll be praying for him.
ReplyDeleteYou are all in my prayers. God bless all of you.
ReplyDeleteThe baby is doing much better and we are all breathing much easier now. They will search every aspect of his heart before they let him leave the children's hospital.
ReplyDeleteGary, I think you are right that sometimes it will self correct. We sure hope he won't be in this for life.
Lucy, SVT is Supraventricular tachycardia, a condition which causes the heart to beat very quickly (200-300 beats/minute) for an extended period of time. It is the most common cause of a heart rate this fast in children and occurs in 1 of 250-1000 kids.
We had never heard of it either. Now we will all become experts.
Thank you Sprinkle and all for your prayers, words and concern.

ReplyDeleteBeing a nurse, I know what SVT is and we have a great-neice who has had two or three episodes of heart rate over 200-300. She had one last year in December at school, passed out and the para-medics were called. They took her to the hospital and then transferred her from southern Florida to Tampa where they could figure out exactly what was wrong. She had a few rogue cells that were sending messages to initiate a beat. These beats caused none of the regular beats to be effective at pumping out oxygenated blood. Our normal heartbeats are initiated by a very specific electrical pathways and sometimes any cell can suddenly decide to send out the message to beat, as if it were a pacemaker. After deciding what to do, they sent her home for a month and then had her come back for an oblation (They pinpointed the area of the heart with the misfiring cells and zapped them with a lazer) After this was done, she felt great and has had no further problems. The doctors were very happy that they did it fairly fast, because they said she would not have survived another attack. (Nice to know after it is all over) She is thirteen and a dancer....everyone knows dancers need lots of oxygen to their muscles! We will pray for Baby Owen.
ReplyDeleteThanks Kacey. He is improving but it looks like these new parents are going to have a lot of concern for a while. It is very scary.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful baby, will add him to my prayer list tonight - so sweet.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to have read that the baby is improving, and I said a prayer for the little fellow.
ReplyDeleteGod be with Owen and his parents. Bless them all.
