LASTING IMAGE

Look at the picture above and imagine that the dog is bigger and the child is  much smaller.  That is what I saw driving home. I could have hit the child and it scared me to death.  Basically an infant about 18 months old, in the middle of the road.

It was a cold day and the toddler's cheeks were bright red. He was wearing footie pajamas and was obviously lost. Meanwhile a man in a nearby field was heading for the child as quickly as he could.  He spoke sweetly to the frightened child and was able to scoop him up. Neither of us knew the child or where it belonged.

We did the best thing we could and that was to follow the dog.  At the top of the hill the dog went to a house where front door was standing wide open.  The man carried the child inside the house yelling for someone while I sat outside and honked my horn. No one appeared and the man was walking out with the child when suddenly a woman came running from the back of the house wearing only a t-shirt and seemed surprised this man was carrying her son. Obviously she had no idea her child had even been gone.

The man informed me she said she was the child's mother.  His family all lives in that area and owns the land and the house.  He knew that she wasn't supposed to be living there and said he would investigate it and he would take responsibility. I left reluctantly, making sure he knew my name and where I lived in case I would be needed to testify about the event.

After calling a few of the other neighbors I learned this was not the first time this small child had been seen unattended in the road.  I went back to my co-rescuer to express my concern.   I felt the need to call the authorities and he said that he would support me in doing whatever my conscience called for. I would have liked to go to the child's home and check  but I feared drugs might be involved.  In hindsight I wish I had called the county sheriff right then.

I knew I could not sleep if something were to happen to that child.  I knew it was simply a miracle that we had gotten the baby out of the road and the next time might not be so fortunate. I call the Department of Human Services and they referred me to the hot-line which I called and gave a report. They gave me an incident number and in a few days I can call back and find out what if anything was done.  I can only pray it has been handled and the child is safe. I will let you know.

UPDATE:  Yesterday I talked to the case worker from Human Services who assured me that he went to the home and investigated.  It seems the front door of the home was faulty and would not close properly.  He oversaw the repair to the door and was assured this would never happen again.  He believed that his visit put the fear of god in the mother.  That was all he could tell me except to thank me for calling and assuring me they would keep a close watch on the home. I also have  his direct line if I see the child out again unattended.

GIVE ME A BREAK

Question Of The Week, 1-11-16

What commercials do you always
fast forward through
(like Sarah McLachlan's ASPCA commercials) and which do you watch and laugh about?
I love Geico especially now with Peter Pan.
The Progressive commercial
when the 50's guy asks Flo
"Where is your husband?"
And who can't laugh at the
Duluth Trading Men's Clothing?

AMUCK OR AMOK

Water is back on and I am catching up. The electrician can't bury the line until the ground is a bit drier but at least everything is back up and running. Meanwhile I did the stupidest thing. Since I couldn't do laundry or wash dishes, I decided to burn. Only after I got a roaring fire going did I realize the wind was blowing hard and I didn't have any water if it got out of control. Thankfully the ground and grass were still wet. Ron used to say that I was running amok when he found me. Looks like I am back to it. Plus when I was raising my son and daughter on my own  my dad would say that we all needed adult supervision. My children have grown into responsible adults but can't say the same for their mom.

THIRSTY CHICKENS

First I had to keep water from coming in my house.  Next I had to pray for a propane delivery before my tank ran out completely.  Now more woes. No water. It seems the flooding caused my barn power to shut down. That caused my well pump to go off. An underground connection from electric pole to the barn shorted out. Now a trench has to be dug from the barn to the pole and a new connection put in. Many dollars! Yikes! The most difficult part was finding an electrician who had the time to take me on. Seems like the flooding created problems for other people. Well you could have fooled me:-) As my daughter used to say, "It's not all about you mother."  Now I just have to remember not to flush.

GOO-GOO-GOOGLY EYES

Question Of The Week, 1-4-16
(First question of the new year)

Do you depend on the internet for answers to your questions?

I used to drive my friends and family crazy with phone calls for answers to my unending questions.  Now I just Google it.  My dad told me once that the search was important even though I might not have all the answers in my lifetime.  But with the internet, I just might.  LOL!

CEREAL RITUALS

Question Of The Week 11-16-15

Do you just pour a bowl of cereal, add milk and then sit down and eat it? Or is there an art to preparing your bowl of cereal?

Do you mix a variety of cereals? (I at least add grape nuts). Do you add fruit or nuts? Do you still eat kids cereal like Cap'N Crunch or Fruit Loops, etc. What about hot cereal like oatmeal or cream of wheat? Inquiring minds want to know. (Well just my inquiring mind.) My family and friends hate the fact that I put Ice water on my cereal instead of milk, but hey, to each her own:-)

PEACE MONGERS

Thank you all for participating in the Veteran's Day Honor Wall that I placed here again and on Facebook for the first time.  This will be an annual event on Veteran's Day on this blog.  It was a privilege for me to type each name and think of you and the love you shared with these Vets from many, many years of service to our country. If you still want the names of other military veterans added to my blog just comment here and I will gladly add them.

When I married Ron and told people he was a retired Navy veteran a fellow commented to me, "Oh you are marrying a war monger!"  As I learned of the many humanitarian things our military does around the world I want to say to that fellow, "These men and women are Peace Mongers." Remember the media only advertises bad deeds but talk to a vet and you will learn that our military mission is as peace keepers.

VETERAN'S DAY 2015

This is a rerun of my post from 2013.  You might see the name of a Veteran you posted and if you do not, then put it in the comments and I will add it to the list.

WHAT IS THE FIRST NAME OF MILITARY VETERANS YOU WOULD LIKE REMEMBERED?

Put his or her first names in the comment section and I will add them to this blog page as a way of saying thanks for their service.

"A veteran is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America' for an amount of 'up to and including my life.'  " ~ unknown

How do you know when to end a friendship
and how do you end it?

BEGIN TO HONOR

Veteran's Day is approaching.  Take 25 minutes of your time to watch this entire video honoring 1991 Congressional Medal Of Honor winner MSG Roy Benavidez.   In doing so you will honor all our Veterans. His story honors all our military, especially our Veterans of Foreign Wars.  My husband often talked of the exploits of those who risked it all to return our trapped and stranded fighting men in Vietnam. Benavidez speech in the second half of the video tells who the heroes are.

DARE TO DREAM

Question Of The Week 11-2-15

“Almost anything you do will be insignificant, but it is very important that you do it.” ~ Gandhi
