Love is blind.
A face that only a mother could love.
THE BUS ON THE HILL by Granny Annie
Susie always stood by the road watching
for the school bus. Her parents insisted on driving her to school
but she waited for the bus each morning just to catch a glimpse of
Dwain. Of course it was only puppy love for these 6th
graders but Susie felt her heart flutter at the sight of him. He always waved to Susie as the bus passed.
The bus had to drive down a bumpy, steep hill road to get to Dwain's house. Susie would watch the bus lights disappear and the reappear as the driver bounced the noisy, loaded vehicle along.
Susie's father knew she had a crush on this boy and he often repeated phrases like “Love laughs at locksmiths” and “Love is blind”. He also told her that Dwain had a face that only a mother could love. Susie knew that was not true because Dwain had the face of movie stars like Elvis or Tarzan.
It was a terrible day when the bus turned down the hill and did not return. Susie panicked. What? Where did it go? Her father told Susie to stay at the house and he ran down the hill to see if the bus had crashed. It had not. The bus had simply disappeared. The community searched and searched but never found any answer for the missing bus and the children riding it.
Susie was now 75 years old and Dwain was never out of sight, out of mind. Their first kiss still burned on her lips. His absence had only made her heart grow stronger over the decades and Susie wished her parents had allowed her to ride that bus.
Ooooh. A mystery is NOT the direction I expected these phrases to take people. Well done.
ReplyDeleteWhat a twist. Did not expect that. Hope it was a friendly alien abduction and the children are living happily on some super planet. If only she could have been allowed to ride that bus. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteEchoing Sue. Quelle surprise.
ReplyDeleteOh this is sad. I hope one day someone will find out how and why that bus vanished into thin air.
ReplyDeleteThey should have added unrequited love to the prompts for your story, Annie! Well done!
