TCM (Turner Classic Movies) and TV Channel GRIT gave me lots of my Mother's favorite shows. I watched all of them that I could yesterday and they made me feel like I was sitting next to my Mom. She could never get enough of John Wayne and neither can I. We loved the original TRUE GRIT and THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE.
We also enjoyed Mother's all time favorite, Humphrey Bogart and Kathrine Hepburn in THE AFRICAN QUEEN.
Plus she loved Clint Walker so we saw him yesterday in NIGHT OF THE GRIZZLY.
And the day went on of favorites as we made plans for what we would watch together today. It is wonderful having her spirit next to me.
What are some of your favorite old movies...especially starring John Wayne?
Rio Bravo and The Quiet Man were my favorites. Clint really made going shirtless popular didn't he?
ReplyDeleteYep he sure did make it popular for us looking.
DeleteThe African Queen is one of my all time favorites.
ReplyDeleteIt is one of mine also. I loved it because my mother loved it so much. She taught me to watch it.
DeleteI like almost anything with John Wayne, a couple of favourites: The Searchers, The Sons of Katie Elder and I like the "Rio" ones, Rio Bravo, Rio Grande, Rio Lobo. I have to be in the right mood to watch The African Queen.
ReplyDeleteI also got to watch The Searchers, Big Jake, She Wore A Yellow Ribbon and War Wagon. I can watch African Queen any time it is available.
DeleteI LOVE Big Jake and forgot to mention it.
DeleteIt was part of Clint Walker's contract that he had to be shirtless in at least one scene in each episode of Chayanne. Most of The Duke's westerns from Stagecoach on are enjoyable. It was fitting that his last was a western.
ReplyDeleteOne of the reasons my mother liked Clint Walker was because of the TV show Cheyenne. It was because the bartender in the show was a friend of hers from OCU and had been her dancing partner.
DeleteThere were a lot of John Wayne movies that I like. Some notables include War Wagon, El Dorado, The Searchers and A Quiet Man. He always had a good ensemble of stock actors that he had used. If you want to see what he was like early on, check out any collection that features his work in the western serials genre, that's where he learned/honed his acting/directing chops.
ReplyDeleteI did not know until I watched Big Jake that John Wayne's son Patrick was in the movie. Learned Patrick was in 43 of John Wayne's 81 movies. I own The Cowboys and can watch it over an over. It was one of 7 that he died in.
DeleteThe spirit of a loved one remains always with us...beside us.
ReplyDelete"The Searchers" was a good movie.
I loved and still love Gregory Peck, and any movie he appeared in. His grandson, Ethan Peck is in George Clooney's latest film..."The Midnight Sun"....playing Clooney's character at a younger age.
I had so many movies I loved when I was a kid..."The Yearling", "Lassie" movies, "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn", "Little Women", "The Red Shoes", "On the Waterfront", "East of Eden", "Picnic". "Giant","Roman Holiday", "Sabrina" (all-time favourite of mine was Audrey Hepbur)...Tony Curtis movies....and the list goes on....I loved westerns and musicals....
Yes, I believe you and I could sit side-by-side enjoying many of these same movies. Now most would be banned for political incorrectness.
