HAND ME DOWN MY WALKING STICK

I thought we had every bug in the world, but I've never seen this one. I thought for a minute it was a praying mantis, but they eat bugs.

Mantises and Walking sticks and dragon flies (or Mosquito Hawks, as my mother would say) I love them all!
ReplyDeleteWe used to sell walking sticks (the bugs) in the feed store. There was an older gentleman that raised them for us. Kinda cool creatures, and know how to hide.

ReplyDeleteWe don't have walking sticks here but when my son was small I let him get a praying mantis egg sack. They were supposed to hatch in an aquarium. Supposed to. There was a tiny crack and they got out. Baby praying mantises! Everywhere! It was awesome.

I have always been leery of them as I heard they could spit an irritating substance at you. Old wives swear they could blind a person. The link you provided gave a less frightening version of their spitting techniques. Glad you weren't spit upon.

ReplyDeleteIs it the same stick insect we have here in Australia I wonder? I have praying mantises around my yard but haven't seen any for a while. They hide in the winter. Now the spring is here I hope to see them again.

We do get stick insects here in the UK, but I've never seen one in the wild, only as pets. Why the hell anyone would want one as a pet I have no idea!
