HAVE YOU HEARD

HARPER LEE
This morning I turned on my computer and the homepage news announced:

Author Harper Lee will release a sequel to To Kill a Mockingbird, her Pulitzer Prize winning novel, 55 years after the release of her only novel it’s been confirmed by her publisher. The 88 year-old will release Go Set a Watchman on July 14, Publisher Harper has confirmed, which was actually written before she completed her iconic novel.

I absolutely cannot wait!!!

Harper Lee said:

My editor, who was taken by the flashbacks to Scout's childhood, persuaded me to write a novel (what became 'To Kill a Mockingbird') from the point of view of the young Scout.

"I was a first-time writer, so I did as I was told. I hadn't realized it (the original book) had survived, so was surprised and delighted when my dear friend and lawyer Tonja Carter discovered it. After much thought and hesitation, I shared it with a handful of people I trust and was pleased to hear that they considered it worthy of publication. I am humbled and amazed that this will now be published after all these years.”

I thought she was dead, so I was surprised to hear about this novel.

  2. I saw this on PBS last night while they interviewed an author of her biography who had talked to Harper Lee's sister. They also interviewed the author Wally Lamb who taught her book for many years before he became a famous author I will have to wait just like I waited for that book written by the author of Little House on the Prairie.

  3. I had heard that on the news as well. It is an amazing story about finding it once again. I will definitely be reading it.

  4. I didn't even know she was still alive. I will be buying this book for sure!

  5. I had indeed heard and am very, very excited. I love that she is alive to see her baby being resurrected too.

  6. I will definitely be in line. I just hope this is something she wants and she is not being coerced. I understand she is deaf and blind while living in assisted living quarters. Just a few years ago her agent was prosecuted for ripping off her royalties.

  8. I'm with Arkansas Patti on this. I hope this is on the level and Lee is on board with the publication.

  9. That's interesting. I didn't realise it was a woman who wrote it. Not a name I've ever heard before. Loved the film & I wanted to read the book but our libraries don't stock it.

Maybe they'll get the new one!

  11. I had no idea she was still alive.

  12. I am back because I have been thinking this wicked thought all day. It looks like she cut her own hair. A true old-lady-I-don't-give-a-shit. I want to be like that when I am old.

  13. TO ALL: I am glad everyone is as excited as I. However Arkansas Patti has me wondering. I have not heard about Harper Lee's living conditions but that could explain the haircut Birdie is worried about. LL you MUST read TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD.

I'm happy to see LL Cool Joe hasn't read To Kill A Mockingbird either. That way I'm not the only one! :)

  16. Like most, I was quite excited over the news but perhaps unlike most, I began to immediately try to decide who I would cast in the 'sure to follow' film given what I have been able to glean about the new book from the chit-chat.

So far my casting includes a couple of selections...

    Scout - Mary Stuart Masterson
    Atticus - Clint Eastwood

  21. It makes me want to read the first one again. I am delighted this is happening - but also a little puzzled. She has been so firm about saying she didn't want any more notoriety.

  22. I read To Kill a Mockingbird so very long ago - I'm wondering if my older Grandchildren and I should read it now. I hope this new novel fulfills all her wishes.

  23. I just hope like Patti that she is not being used in this deal.

  24. I'm so excited for her.

Like gigihawaii, I too thought she was long gone.

I hope she gets highly paid for her work!!

Joey, you would love To Kill A Mockingbird, trust me, you would!!

  26. Yes, I saw that the other day and immediately posted the announcement up on my Facebook page. How wonderful!

  27. I did not grow up in America, but my kids love her first book. My daughter explained every thing to me.
You take care of baby chicks, how cool is that. I bet no one else in your class does that.

  28. I haven't read the original since high school. All I remember was being entranced by it... and something about bustin' up a chiffarobe.

  29. I saw that!

What fascinates me is that she claims that she "said all she had to say" in one book...and now there's another.

  30. TO ALL: I hope those who haven't read TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD will do so. I would start reading my own copy again if I could see. Lots of vision problems these days.

Alan, I love your cast choices for the movie:
    Scout - Mary Stuart Masterson
    Atticus - Clint Eastwood

  31. Who wouldn't love her masterpiece?
I too am eager to read this.

  32. I'm already reading the occasional story saying that this isn't her actually doing this; that this wouldn't have been done had her sister still be alive; that at her age, she isn't there anymore, and it's others wanting to do this.
