FINDERS KEEPERS

Question Of The Week 9-9-13

How about some Ben Franklins or his pals?

WHAT IS THE BEST THING/s YOU HAVE EVER FOUND AND DID YOU RETURN IT OR GET TO KEEP IT?

  1. For several years I was responcible for cleaning out older homes to make them ready to become rentals.

In one I found an old cheat of drawers and I was allowed to keep anything left behind that caught my eye, so I took it home..

I started taking the drawers out to clean up and paint. taped to the back of one of the drawers was an envelope with 5 $100.00 bills.
I tracked down the son of the prior owner but he was a drunk.
It was early december so I went to the local power company and asked to see the manager. He had the cut off list in his office and I choose someone on that list due to have their power cut off on dec. 24th.. That 500.00 paid their delinquent bill and about a month ahead..
    True Story~!

    love ya bunches

  2. Sonny -- Oh my goodness, that was a loving thing to do but of course you would do that because you are a loving person. AND, hooray, your comment posted!!!

  3. After my mother died several years ago I packed up her old books and my brother took them to a ReUse place. They found $400 in one of the books. I had missed it, but they called my brother and returned the money. And from that I found a belief in the goodness that can be found in others.

  4. Olga -- Now that was a reputable book store! We often hear of people putting money in books. I wonder why?

  5. I was very poor and a single parent when I took my small children to the Fair. We planned to only look around because we couldn't afford to buy anything or go on any rides. Suddenly I spied a $20 on the ground getting buried in the dirt and under trampling feet. We weighed the options of trying to return the money and decided it would be impossible so we used it to have a memorable time at the Fair that year. I never felt bad about it, only blessed.

  6. A friend gave me some clothes she no longer wanted and in the pocket of one of the jeans was indeed $100.00 and I returned it to her.

  7. I was walking behind a man in the airport once who had his money clip out and he dropped several $100 bills. Yes, I did run to catch up with him to return them.

  8. I was in college. I spotted this beautiful brunette. I kept her.

  9. I am loving these comments. Awesome thing Sonny did and Cliff's comment made me smile.

When I was in elementary school I found a quarter on the playground and earnestly turned it in to the principal. She said if no one had claimed it in a month, then it was mine. I SO kept track of that time and in a month, went to her office and she gave it to me. I treated myself to usually forbidden sugar snacks at the school canteen. :)

A couple of months ago I found someone's Visa credit card in the parking lot of Sam's Club. I didn't know whether to contact Visa or turn it into Sam's. I opted for Sam's, thinking someone would be calling to see if anyone found it. I hope they did.

  10. Changes in the wind -- I would have hated to live with your conscience if you had decided to keep your friend's $100. Of course you returned it!

Jeanie -- I always feared Ron would drop his money clip and he always carried hundred dollar bills. I'm glad you returned the stranger's money and hope he appreciated your honesty. Did he?

Cliff -- Okay, you win the prize...unless you had to lock Marilyn up to keep her.

Lynn -- I wish we knew what the beneficiary of Sonny's good deed thought about such a gift. You have always been stretching the limits for candy treats haven't you? I am betting the Visa card person was glad you turned in their card.

  11. Okay, so far I'm the only one who kept my find for myself. Yikes! But honestly where do you turn in a lost $20 at the Fair? Okay, I could have spent it on someone else or given it to our church. Now I feel guilty and need to give someone $20:)

  12. Dogs...three times I've found stray dogs. Didn't keep them...but was very tempted. :) Two were abandoned...one while she was pregnant. All her offspring (and she) found lovely homes. The other abandoned one found a new home and the other was lost and the people were overjoyed to have him back. He'd apparently jumped out of the car and gone on walkabout. :)

  13. Annie,
I'm very certain you HAVE repaid that 20.00 a thousand times over thru the years.. Perhaps in many ways you dont even realize..
money is money, but the kindness of your heart that you share is PRICELESS..

  15. My beautiful daughters, and I got to keep both of them, thanks to their birth mothers who did the most loving thing they could by giving them away.

  17. I found a twenty dollar bill on a street in City Island, NY (or NJ) when I was little. They was no one around to return it to so I kept it.

I haven't but last Christmas I put a hundred dollar bill in a grab bag to make the game more exciting. I was so happy when my grandson won.

  19. When I was younger and there were a lot of teenagers in and out of my house, someone left one of those oversized sweaters. I could never track down the owner, so I happily wore it for several years. Now if one of my granddaughters' friends left something at my house today, I wouldn't be able to use it. The styles have changed!

  20. After my mom died, I was cleaning out her room and closet with my daughters. I found $500 cash in an old purse, but I gave it to my Dad.

  21. These stories are amazing. Sonny, just wow!! What an awesome thing to do.

I'd say our cats, but then they managed to find us. It started with Rocco when I was in college...he was constantly coming over to my family's house and we fed him, and played with him, and when it was time to say goodnight he slept on the doormat all night long! Then he came to live with us for the rest of his life. He died on memorial day 6 years ago, probably knowing I'd remember it.

  22. Talon – So sad the number of stray dogs around here. People dump them and the dogs then find each other and run in dangerous packs. Slim was with a group of them when she was about 6 months old and found us. Ron frightened the other dogs away with gunfire but Slim kept coming so we decided she could stay.

    Sonny – I hope that I have:)

Cliff – Oh yes. Now, please go stand by your mailbox and wait:)

LL Cool Joe – What a wonderful statement.

Brighid – Paying it forward is the best!

cube – Oh so happy to know someone else kept the money.

gigihawaii – Now that would be an exciting grab bag to find. Hum, it might just be a good tradition to start and see how many more would show up at Christmas time:)

Susan Adcox – You are so right. What in the world would we do with the clothes our grandchildren wear? (Rather the clothes they don't wear!)

kenju – Do you think your mother forgot that the $500 was in that purse?

Riot Kitty – Rocco has continued to live long in your heart. I don't believe I have ever forgotten any of my pets. Our most loved cats were Mr. T and Mrs.Tiggy Winkle. They were siblings. Tiggy disappeared at age 9 and Mr. T. died at age 17 of a stroke. Our “Mr.T” was the original, being named long before the movie/tv star. He was white with a perfect gray “T” on the top of his head.

  23. I have a Warhol book with what appears to be his signature in it. I think it's a great find and I should really look into the signature to see what's it worth (although I wouldn't want to part with it).

  24. This house is so small, n I'm a squirrel packing things away- Always bumping into old treasures-
I did find a surprise $30 once when broke - I'd forgotten I'd hidden it in a small envelope before moving here. Lucky it didn't get tossed without checking- because usually I save old cards to reread.

After cleaning my parents home out, my sister found n gave me a zippered case full of congrats cards to my parents for having me! So great to read hand-written notes from all my older departed loved relatives n their friends welcoming me!

  25. No such exciting finds in my life so far - but I have had a few nice things stolen which were not returned :( I particularly miss the gold ring with my name embossed on it which was presented to me by my wife for my birthday.

  26. One time, when I was very short on cash, I found a $20 bill stuck in a bush by the side of a highway. That was 20 years ago, when $20 was more valuable than it is today! You're darn tootin' I kept it. :-)

  27. I found a $10 and $5 bill in my garden. Seriously. We asked our neighbors and nobody knew who it could possibly belong to. We donated it to a charity as we always do when we find money on the ground.

  28. If I found a coin or something, I'll use it to buy treats for everyone. If I found a big items, I will always try to find the owner. I know how's it like to lose something as it has happens to my hubby before.

Having said that, it saddens me to see that my colleague found something and not return it, right in front of his children....that's bad teaching :"(

  29. i find things daily - i have a jar where i keep all the found coins (pennies also) and bills for a year and at the end of the year i donate it, but the most valuable thing was a what gold broach, smashed and scratched up badly with a number of diamonds in it. It was worth a few hundred dollars, which i did keep.

  30. wow did you find that??? I know a local radio station was putting them all over their town for a PR stunt... I always give things back to their owner if I can...I always do what I'd like someone to do for me and then I pray it comes back to me when I loose something.
