NOT YET A TEEN

Question Of The Week  3-25-13

What was your biggest accomplishment before you turned 13?

Mine would be singing a duet at church with my best friend in front of the entire congregation. Or maybe it was when I got to bake a cake without any help.  Both accomplishments were followed by a personal sense of pride.

  1. Probably surviving in a household with 0 privacy. :) I always found I needed that and I guess I have plenty of it now.

Seriously - I guess winning the social science fair when I was 12. My dad kept hovering near my exhibit - he was so proud.

  2. Having enough perception to read my mother's mood swings and try to avoid being hit all the time.

    Apart from that I don't think I accomplished anything, I wasn't a great achiever.

  3. Lynn -- Your comment made me remember that I finally got my own room before I was 13. Yes our household didn't have much privacy before then. Love it that you won the social science fair. What was your exhibit?

LL Cool Joe -- It hurts my heart every time you talk about the sorrow your mother caused you in your childhood. It is hard to believe, knowing your talent, that you were not an early achiever.

  4. Mine was getting a short story published. And learning how to barrel race - both were so cool. Thanks for reminding me, Annie! :)

And Joey - I'm sorry you had to deal with that!

  5. Talon -- I am not surprised that you were published before you were 13. Belated congratulations! I did live in one town where the rodeo was a huge deal and most of my friends were barrel racers. It amazed me and no, I never tried it:)

  6. I would say being double promoted in second grade. Our class was proficient in fractions, long division, and advanced reading so there was no need for many of us to go to third grade.

I won a few science fairs along the way too. I've always been a science nut.

  7. cube -- I never heard of an entire class being double promoted. That definitely is a pre-teen accomplishment! I'm afaid I was never a science nut, just a boy nut:)

  8. I moved from NY to NC when I was 8 and after the first week in an nc school/ 2nd grade- I went to the library and a lady gave me tests.. The next day I moved to the 4th grade class. I was new anyway and a week wasnt enough time to make friends so, it was fine and it was an accomplishment though I never felt I'd done anything to deserve it..

ps- so sorry Joe. my mom was an emotional blackmail artist and also a queen of the mood swings..

we survived~! we're still here and thats an accomplishment that in and of itself is unexplainable.

  9. Mine was a piano recital at the age of 10. I still remember the Minuet (I believe that's what it was called). I personally don't remember it, but my fingers do. It's the only song I know by memory all the way through.

  10. Getting second place in an art contest in second grade. Even at that age, I knew I couldn't draw.

That, and maybe getting my dad to take us to the 24-hour-doughnut place at midnight.

  11. Altho I was always an introvert growing up, I had alot of childhood star moments. I won 1st place in a state regional art fair in Boston in 4th grade (9 yrs old). Taught myself guitar beginning 11, in Jr high had supporting roles in 2 school plays, The Happiest Days of Your Life (comedy), n Hello Dolly.

After 13 I did a bit more- in dancing, plays, teaching a Guitar class n choreography for different shows. Also went to the State Science Fair. Plus the entire time I was a Girl Scout of America n did alot of charity events n parades. When a junior scout, was on a parade float in uniform waving for miles...

I'm really tired- may have forgotten something...

  12. As many of your commenters pointed out, privacy. One bathroom and a family of seven...but that was until I left for college!

  13. My kindergarten teacher said I was "the best little raindrop of all" one morning after we all danced around pretending to be raindrops. It was the height of my glory as a dancer.

  14. Sonny -- You were very smart then and you are very smart now...and talented too. It amazes me that you can do all that you do.

Ileana -- I can just picture a cute little 10 year old Ileana in a fluffy dress posed perfectly at the piano and getting great applause.

Riot Kitty -- Nothing wrong with second place. I'm betting you could draw then and can draw now. Love your memory of going to doughnut place with your dad at midnight. Getting my dad to do that would have been a real accomplishment!

Snaggle Tooth -- Wow, I think you were the girl I envied a lot when I was a preteen.

Tabor -- There were only five of us but getting bathroom time was difficult until we moved into a two bathroom house when I was 11. Oh what a relief it was.

Kerry -- Oh how wonderful that you were the best raindrop. I was in a water ballet when I was eight and the play was Cinderella. Of course I wanted to be Cinderella but ended up being one of the dancers at the ball. Even a raindrop would have been better:)

Cliff -- Imagining you were a rowdy boy, 12 was a great accomplishment for sure. Ron says people had bets on whether he would live to be 16.

  15. Granny Annie: Not everyone in the class was promoted. The ones who went to 3rd grade hated us.

  16. Carrying my brother home on my back when he cut his foot at the creek. I did used to take care of him a lot.

  17. i was already experimenting with chemistry and playing around with the bangs that they could make so i guess the biggest accomplishment was not blowing my self up!
Of course i was already a major swimmer and horseback rider and a bunch of other things that were just plain fun!
