WHAT WOULD YOU DO WITH THE MONEY

Helping Hands
What if you went to church one Sunday and instead of taking up a collection the minister handed out envelopes of money to the congregation?  I read a story yesterday in the online Upper Room Daily Devotional about such an occurrence.  The minister had the ushers pass out $5, $10 and $20 bills and then instructed the church members to go out and use this money to help someone.

How would you have helped others with the money?

  1. Well that kinda happened recently to my partner. Someone turned up at the church and had no money to feed his family. My partner took him down to the supermarket and bought him a whole load of food and then drove him back to his house.

  2. I would donate it to the food banks my church supports.

A former coworker went to one of those mega churches and they did that. Everyone got an envelope with cash. He was there with several family members and they pooled their envelope money and gave it to a niece who needed it.

  3. LL Cool Joe -- That was a good thing your partner did. It is always best to buy a meal or groceries or gasoline rather than just give the money and walk away. Is your daughter still enjoying what a great April Fools joke she managed to pull on you?

Lynn -- Maybe your co-worker's church was the one the story was about. It was an interesting idea. I love the idea of pooling the money for a family member in need. Thanks for the trip to New York on your blog today:)

  4. I too would ask a few others to pool the money they got with me- till we had enough to put together//soil-plants- fertilizer- water hose/ a garden for a needy family. Then they could tend it together and just have to get plants in the years to come. That way we;d be helping to feed a family for a long time and maybe that family could grow some extra to give away and on and on.. Gardens are a wonderful family experience and its kinda like watching God grow stuff.

  5. I think food for somone trying to stretch their money. Or perhaps a night out for one of the military wives that live near here and have such difficult times right now.

  6. Sonny -- Good idea. You know the Chinese proverb:"Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime." Your garden is a lovely idea. Glad you like my questions.

Tabor -- Love the idea of a meal out for the military wives. It does sound like you would be planning to put some of your own money with the handout, or you would be pooling funds with others.

  7. I would buy food and take it to God's Food Pantry. They have been saying in the local newspaper that they are really needing certain items right now.

  8. Well I would first pray and then see what happens but I have no doubt It would be directed to where it should go.

  9. Isn't it teach a man to fish and he'll sit in a boat all day drinking beer?
I'd just increase the amount I'm already giving away. I guess I've got several options. There are a lot of worthy causes out there.

  13. What great answers, every one of them. And what great people like LL's partner doing what he did. AWESOME!! I read this story somewhere too. I like the idea of praying about where it would best be used. There are so many needy places very near where I live that would be so deserving.

  14. My daughter, a senior in high school who is on the honor roll, excels in crew and has a part-time job told me out of the blue that she buys those bags of food they sell at the supermarket to give to needy families. I have much to be proud of in that girl.

I like the idea of giving food because I hate the idea of people going hungry. The garden idea is excellent.

  15. Rachel -- God's Food Pantry is a neat name for a helping organization. I know you and know you would put the money to good use. That red bud tree on your blog looks like it was trimmed carefully by hand. We know whose hand:)

Changes -- "Pray first"...good idea:) Love what you have done with the letter "O" today. I'm getting a bit behind on enjoying your A-Z project but will catch up today.

Cliff -- Well, well it does sound like you may be a fisherman! It's a good idea to lump the added money with your giving fund. By the way, those pictures of you and Marilyn on your blog speak clearly about you both. LOL

Chatty Crone -- I lean toward children's causes as well. That picture as you blog header today is hysterical. Hope you will leave it for a while. Those dogs are fantastic.

Riot Kitty -- You life is a "worthy cause" and we know what you would do with the money besides giving to the food bank. Yes Joey's partner seems to be all about doing good for others.

Bonnie -- It is a hard choice with so many places helping others in need. I don't doubt that you would find a place to do good. I have never in my life seen a photograph of sand-hill cranes with their offspring. Loved that picture on your blog today!

cube -- I know exactly what you mean about the pride you have in your daughter. We sometimes misjudge kids today by trying to lump them in with all the delinquents in the news. One of our grandsons (a high school junior) surprised us recently by organizing a fund raiser with several of his friends for Pepper's Ranch, a place in their area that gives a home to young children. The people who run the ranch were amazed at the spirit that filled these teenagers to get behind the cause. Nice tribute for Discovery on your blog today. I get very emotional about our space program.
