OUT DAMN FLY!

Tis the season of utter confusion regarding bug eradication. A few days of warmth brought the flies inside. We had a reprieve when the weather cooled again but somehow this last time the flies decided to hang around. We cannot use high powered sprays or foggers because of breathing problems so around here it all boils down to a fly swatter and a good aim. Also we cannot use the fly swatter in Slim's presence because she must have been badly treated with one before she adopted us. She cowers and hides when any fly swatter surfaces.

Yes we know about fly strips but OMG how vile those are when they dangle filled with dead and/or dying bugs. I expect to see David Hedison (1958 with Vincent Price) or Jeff Goldblum's head on one of the still living and hear a tiny voice repeating "Help me, help me" over and over.

When the children were little I would name the flies and build little houses out of match boxes. Oh how my sister hated me when I taught that to her children. They cried and cried when their mama killed George or Henry or Phillip. Hey we were poor and bored and free entertainment came in whatever form we could find. LOL

Believe me, those days are gone and I am as wicked to a fly as the next person. Keep your eye on the fly and swing. Splat, you'll get it every time...almost:)

  1. Everytime I see any food uncovered I give the fly lecture. In the winter one can get away with it but as I tell MTL every day now - look out the summer is acumin!

  3. We have real issues with flies around our house in the summer as we have about 8 horses in our field in front of the house, plus sheep in the field next door to that and sometimes cows in another field nearby.

We use an electric fly swatter, that looks a bit like a small tennis racket.

  4. No, how can you already have flies? It's still too cool here.

  5. I am not afraid of insects, but I can certainly be annoyed by them and flies annoy the crap out of me. I swat them and will even spray hairspray on them to glue their horrible little wings together. I am a fly killer too.

  7. We had a few in the house 2 weeks ago, when the weather was warm and I opened doors to get air into the house. I wield a mean fly swatter too!

  8. Hmm... sounds you need to invest in a fully grown Venus Fly Trap.... Flies love the flowers and you will too.. (gnagnagna... as in sinister laughter by Vincent Price)

  9. I love that you made the flies into matchbox pets - lol!

No flies here yet...and can't say I miss them, but they'll be coming soon.

That photo cracked me up. The original "The Fly" movie freaked me out as a kid. I never looked at flies the same again!

  10. Annie,

When we were kids we used to make "fly jails" out of two corks and some sewing needles.

You took one cork and put the pins in a circle around the edges of the cork and then the second cork was put on top of the needles. You left one pin out so you could put the fly in and then you put that last pin in and the fly was in jail.

We also liked to catch "Lightning bugs" or "fireflys" and put them in a mayonaisse jar and take them to the movies. Just as the picture got good we would open the lid and let all the lightning bugs out and they would sparkle all over the theater.

    Yeah, Annie, we were poor,too!

  11. Is the pic a movie reference?

    I can't do strips...UGH.

And while I like the idea of being kind to all God's creatures, flies deserve no mercy.

  12. Hi Annie ~~ Flies are a real pest to us all. I don't get too many inside, But we have oodles of spiders of all sorts in the garden and all over - not inside thankfully and every now and then a mouse or two invade the
    house.
I really liked your suggestion that we all learn how to Czechoslavakia.
Just in case. Good one Annie.
Take care, my friend, Love, Merle.
