CARLE JOHN BLENNER 1884 - 1952

Here is my grandmother's painting. I had to take photo from angle because of the glare from the glass. The artist is Carle John Blenner and he has quite a biography.

When I look at this picture I can smell my grandmother's dusting powder on her dresser and her fried chicken. I catch a hint of grandpa's cigarette smoke and I always hear laughter.

You must, must, MUST do as I say:

Take that painting to a framer. Someplace simple like Hobby Lobby or Michaels. That painting deserves a mat and a non-glare glass, with a beautiful (yet simple) frame.

YES YES YES. You are taking it down now.......you are walking to the car........you are choosing a mat color that matches one of those flower petals......you are choosing an antiqued, brushed gold frame.....

  2. I was in an antique store the other day and everything I touched brought my grandmother back to me. I didn't want to leave there.

  3. That's neat to have something that reminds you so much of someone you love!

  4. Dana -- Then it wouldn't be my memories of my grandma.

Quilldancer -- That is why I love antique stores and flea markets because of the memories they unlease in my brain.

Riot Kitty -- Yep, my Grandma Myrtle was a doozie.

  6. I know what you mean about these heirloom items and the vivid images they create in our mind's eye. They provide such a wonderful feeling of continuity.

  7. At least it's a pretty painting as well as being worth a little bit, not to mention the wonderful memories tied to it.

I watch Antiques Roadshow and see all those hideous (to me!) paintings that end up being worth a fortune. That'll never happen to me, lol. ;o)

  10. That is lovely. Those memories are so precious.

The only tangible thing I have left from my Nanna is a little prayer book she bought me when I was very young. what she did pass on to me was her time and her sewing and knitting skills. Priceless!

  11. Your lovely painting has a 'comfortable' look and feel about it. One minute you are looking at the detail of the flowers and the next noticing the bowl they are in and then the net curtains are there and then the relections in the polished table - yes I really like it
    Take care

  12. Dana is right!!! You must mat it properly and have non-glare glass. It is lovely.
