ANCHORS AWEIGH

My grandson Ryan deploys tomorrow for 6 months. Here is a picture of his sleeping quarters and a picture of the type sleeping quarters his grandpa might have had in the 60's and 70's. Ryan's might a little better but still pretty tiny. Ryan's are called coffin racks and are three stacks high. They have place for storage and also have small stand up lockers to store their uniforms.  The older ones were 4 stacks. Not sure where they stored anything. God bless all our military on air, land and sea.

  1. Speedy and safe travels and speedy and safe return home. I cannot imagine the shock of adjusting to a "regular" space when they return.

    1. I don't think he will spend a lot of time in his rack and when he does he will be exhausted from a day's work.

  4. Coffin Racks, I think I'd be renaming my bunk. I do hope Ryan comes back safe and sound.
I see the older coffin racks were more hammock style, able to sway on those chains to remain horizontal no matter which way the ship leaned. I've read somewhere that eliminates seasickness, since the body isn't lurching and trying to keep balanced.

    1. I was surprised to learn these new bunks are called coffin racks. Yes they need a new name for sure.

  6. Hoping Ryan has a save deployment and is home safely and soon.
They sure can't be fitful sleepers in those bunks.

    1. Ryan has been in the Navy 3 years and has gone on sort cruises but this deployment will take him away for at least 6 months. Hope he will come back with lots of pictures and tales of adventure. (Safe adventure.)

  9. You must feel extremely proud of Ryan...I do and I don't even know him...and he is of no relation.

Good on you, Ryan. A huge pat on your back from me. :)

  10. My goodness good job he doesn't have claustrophobia God bless him.
During the war my dad who was in the Royal Navy slept in a hammock, so he said. I suppose they wouldn't have got so seasick crossing the Atlantic in winter.
Think I'll stick to a balcony cabin!
