THIRSTY CHICKENS

First I had to keep water from coming in my house.  Next I had to pray for a propane delivery before my tank ran out completely.  Now more woes. No water. It seems the flooding caused my barn power to shut down. That caused my well pump to go off. An underground connection from electric pole to the barn shorted out. Now a trench has to be dug from the barn to the pole and a new connection put in. Many dollars! Yikes! The most difficult part was finding an electrician who had the time to take me on. Seems like the flooding created problems for other people. Well you could have fooled me:-) As my daughter used to say, "It's not all about you mother."  Now I just have to remember not to flush.

  1. No, it's not all about you because now it is about your chickens! Do they drink water from puddles or do they only drink fresh water?

I hope this repair doesn't cost too much. It sounds expensive. :-(

    1. Birdie the chickens will drink from anything that holds water. A mud puddle or an old bucket sitting around with rainwater. I just try to give them fresh water so they have a choice. They may not care but I feel better :-)

  2. Ack. I hope it is resolved quickly. And more cheaply than you expect.

    1. EC, the most important part is resolved and I have power back to the barn but there is still work to do. It will be $100 less than I anticipated but on the whole that's not a big help:-(

  5. I'm glad that no water came inside your house, Annie, and that you're safe - that is the main thing. I'm sure the chickens now have quenched their thirst!

Money... how nice it would be to have enough not to have to worry. I'll never know what that feeling would be like unless I win the Lotto...and that's unlikely to ever happen...but it won't be from the lack of my trying!!

I hope everything comes together for you soon, Annie...and not at a high cost. Take care.

    1. Lee, my husband used to admonish me when I would worry about money and add assurances that it would all work out. And it always does:-)

    1. Lynn, I should be ashamed because people around the world are sure having a lot more problems than I am.

  9. Been there and done that. Do you have insurance that will cover it? Our garage is shifting and the outside wall cracking and over 10,000 dollars may cover it. I'll trade you disasters.

  11. Woops- guess the storms didn't spare you-
So sorry to hear about the heat n water! Have been wondering about the chickens too- well, they can drink whatever is in a bottle as liquid there if they must... Wonder what they would do with diet pepsi??? Or pickle juice? or Pineapple juice? Just wondering alot...
Veggie cans have water too- corn may be ok.

I felt so bad for the west this past week- SO many in trouble.

Hope this problem doesn't take too long for fixing!
    Extra prayers and Good Luck!

    1. Snaggletooth, no worries about the chickens. They have managed fine through it all. Sometimes I forget they are birds and birds know how to survive. Thanks for the extra prayers :-)

  12. Yikes, I hate the thought of digging for repair work! Today, we had some furnace issues and the guy injected a solvent into our pipes to "clean" them. Now, I'm worried the solvent will eat through the pipes which run under our flooring for heat. Fingers crossed for you.

    1. Barb, surely they wouldn't have injected something in your pipes that would injure them! Did you ask? Things are looking up here. Thanks for your concern.

  13. Ouch, didn't know you were having water problems. So glad that you now have running water. The sound of a toilet flushing can be pure magic once you have been denied.
