DEVILISH GOOD LOOKS

One of my roosters is a serial rapist and I fear the sentence must be death if I cannot find him a new home.

It seems that because he is at the bottom of the pecking order, he waits in seclusion to attack the hens while the dominate rooster is out of sight. His attacks are so severe that he ends up killing the hen.

The first hen I found dead had been fearful of going inside the hen house and I would literally pick her up and carry her in, having no idea she was a victim.  I thought the extreme cold got her while actually I had carried her to her death. I would never have believed the rooster was a killer until I caught him in action last night.

This time I managed to stop the attack and rescue the next hen, very near death. I put her in a cage away from the rest. This morning, after reading MY ROOSTER IS A PSYCHOPATH RAPIST, at Backyard Chickens online, I better understand the problem.

I hope my damaged hen is still alive this morning but I doubt she will be. Her comb was raw and bloody and it looked like her right leg was broken. After 16 years raising chickens, it is still a learning process for me.
J.T. is a Rhode Island Red and is a gorgeous rooster but looks can be deceiving.

  2. how about putting him in a cage, if you do not want to put him in a pot (you got to cook roosters a long time, but they make a good soup)???

  4. Wow, who knew. I know that caged birds such a doves can be this way, but they are caged. Sorry, but I think he needs to be put down.

  7. I knew roosters could be rough but not this rough. My guess is not many people will want to take him. Let us know what happens with the hen and the rooster.

  8. What? Is he a moslem rooster?

  9. That is shocking. I had no idea this could happen. It would pain me but for the girls sake, he would have to go.

  10. A stunning looking bird, that is for sure, but it is time to string him high (without a court case) and throw him into a pot of boiling water!

I hope the hen survives, the poor girl.

    Roosters can be mean critters!

  12. That's terrible! Never heard of such a thing- Goes to show all creatures have the capacity of taking demented turns when they are kept from getting their way-
Hope you find a way to stop n catch him before more hens are harmed.

  13. He needs to go in the pot, before he harms anymore of the girls.
I didn't have any roosters in my flock. One of the gals at work asked me how I got eggs from the hens without them...

  14. Geez! Nature is a horrible and violent place sometimes.

  15. TO ALL: The hen is alive and looking healthy but still does not seem able to stand. She shifts her position around in the cage but I haven't seen her stand yet.

J.T. is soon to be caught and taken to a friends where she plans to butcher him and make stew. Catching him is the hard part. He seems to know we are gunning for him. We also must be careful to catch the right rooster because he has an identical twin brother.

  16. Oh dear. Nature is tough.

I am a bit shocked by Cube's comment. For the record, I know several Muslim men and they are all gentlemen.

  17. Woah.

Who knew that some poultry could actually be harmful to one's health?

Keep us informed as to when you finally catch the little bugger.

  20. TO ALL: I have not been able to trap J.T. yet and his victim died yesterday. She seemed to be healing and then..... Guess the cold got her. Poor girl. However so far no others have met his over exerted passion.
