WHO KNEW?

I had never heard of hedgehogs as family pets.  My soon-to-be 43 year old daughter is getting a hedgehog for her upcoming birthday.  It is almost certain that her daughter who is 12 will assume ownership of this pet right away. Evidentally these cute little critters make great family pets. Do you know anyone who has a hedgehog for a pet? Theirs is already named Mrs Tiggy Winkle and they will call her Winkie.
Talk about a fun tub toy!  Hedgehogs like to swim.
Isn't that a cute little bundle!

  1. I imagine if I were still a kid I would just have to have one of those. They are cute. Love the name by the way...

Yes, that is such a cute pet. Adorable. But, does it bite humans?

    1. GIGIHAWAII, my daughter says they would have to be extremely frightened to bite and that sometimes you feel them nibble if you feed them out of your hand. They are supposed to be very tame.

  3. Being the curmudgeon I must ask, does it pee in the water?

  4. I had heard of them making regular visits to accept graciously offered food, but not of having them as permanent pets. I would definitely have wanted one. Or two.

I have seen them in pet stores and they are SO adorable. A good pet for a cat owner! No cat would risk those spines.

    1. DITCHINGTHEDOG, as I understand it those spines arent as painful as they look. and that one picture it looks like there's a cat in the background.

  11. As a child, that would have been my pet of choice. I hear not all of them like to swim and that those that do, must be given a way to get out of the water.
    Have fun and take pictures.

    1. ARKANSAS PATTI, I imagine my blog friends will be seeing lots of pictures of Winky to come. Good point about having a way for them to get out of the water. I have had baby chicks drowned because they couldn't get out of the trough.

My sister had one years ago, back in her "I want to care for someone other than myself but I can't" phase. She rehomed him, but he was pretty cute. They are prickly.

    1. HEARTINHAND, I already have enough critters but it sure appeals to me to think about having a little cute hedgehog too. guess I'll wait and see if my daughter has to rehome her because I would end up being the rehome.

  13. I researched hedgies at one point when I was thinking of getting one. Upside: they are not rodents, so you can let them run around without worrying that they will chew your wires and cables. Downside: they are nocturnal, and often grumpy if you wake them during the day.

    1. SPARKLING RED, they may not the rodents but they sure have little mouse looking faces. Also I didn't think about them being nocturnal. My granddaughter will give them a run for their money I am sure!

  14. No kidding? They look so cute but it never occurred to me that they could be pets.

  15. I never associated them with anyhere except the British Isles. Hope there is a vet closeby who specialises in 'wild animals' in case it ever needs treatment. Wonder if there are any vaccinations needed similar to cat and dog ones

    1. CATHY, I am hoping that Petsmart can provide them with all the care information they might need. That seems to be the best place in the United States to stay informed on unusual pets.

  16. Oh, I would love one. They are so cute. When I taught first grade, we had films about a mole. One of them was about the mole and the hedgehog. When I went to Estonia, I found a book in Estonian about that very same mole.
