STILL UNDER $5.00

No more frozen chicken water this winter and it only cost $1.38. Of course that doesn't include my son's labor costs or the cost of the other supplies that I already had on hand, like the concrete block, the extension cord and the light bulb. I saw the process on YouTube and immediately knew it was the answer to my problem. Plus I did not want to pay a minimum of $40 for pre-made water warmers. A notch was cut under the block to allow the cord through and my purchase of the plug in for the socket and the bulb was set in the cord. Plug it in and set the water on top and there you have it. Hooray! I can wake up with snow on the ground and go back to sleep because I will know the chicken water is not frozen. Thanks son!

Cut the concrete block in half and carve out a notch for the cord.  Insert plug and light bulb.

The light will warm the block and under the water container.

A happy chicken looks forward to water all winter.

  1. How clever.
How did people manage before electricity? Yes, I know - with a lot of work. Hard work. And less comfort. Electricity is an invention/discovery I love.

  2. Is that ever clever. Besides warm water, they will have a cool night light.

    1. ARKANSAS PATTI, it wasn't dark when I tested it so I didn't think about the light it might provide as well as the warmth.

    1. SNAGLE TOOTH, a 40 watt light bulb shouldn't use much electricity. It is amazing how chickens survive the winter. Their layers of feathers go deep and are very thick underneath

  8. That is very clever. The chickens will certainly appreciate it--as will you if it gives you a few more moments in a warm, cozy bed.

    1. OLGA HEBERT, I tremble every time I think about that horrible winter and trudging through knee deep snow to get fresh water to the chickens. all of my family members just knew I was going to be found dead in the snow I had to check in with everyone by phone if I went in or out of the house.

  9. For a minute there I thought that chicken water might be the next health craze thing, kind of like coconut water. I didn't like to think how it might taste.

  12. I'm so glad your son was able to help you and your chickens.

I had my children so I would have someone to fetch the remote... chicken water warmers never crossed my mind, but hey, it works.
