ONE MAN'S TRASH

Question Of The Week -- May 20, 2013

Do you have (or have you ever had) a treasure box and what do you keep in it?

My paternal grandmother's treasure box.

She kept her favorite photos from the early 1900's.

I had an old cigar box full of my childhood treasures.  My best treasures were small bisque statues of children who came alive as my imaginary friends.

  1. I still have an old jewelry box I had as a child, full of little treasures (bracelets, etc.)

Do you still have the bisque figures?

  2. Lynn -- Sadly I do not but I often wonder whatever happened to them. Since they would come to life, I'm assuming they went to live with another young child who needed them. I envy you having yours.

  3. I had a shoebox filled with nicks and nacks from my childhood... Lost everything in a fire many years ago. But most of my nicks and nacks are in my head anyway... ;)

  4. I have always had a thing for boxes. Show me a box, and I'll want it. I have (or had until this past weekend) quite a few of them. Many of my treasures were sold in an estate sale, though I still have enough to fill a store....lol From tiny earring boxes to a steamer trunk - I love them (no matter what I put in them.)

  5. Holland -- How sad to lose everything in a fire. Devastating. Thankfully we do have our memories. Well, for a while....until we get old like me....

kenju -- I have been thinking about the estate sale and hoping you did well. I too have a thing for boxes and cannot pass one by. If only they could all fit inside one another for storing. lol

  6. Interesting timing....I have a box that was my mother's and I was thinking this weekend about writing a post about it. It still have her address book and a few other keepsakes of hers in it.

  8. I have two treasure boxes. One I keep mementos in - concert stubs and the like. The other are just random things that mean something to me, but would mean little to anyone else. When I pass away, I can see my kids scratching their heads over a small plastic whistle! :)

The only treasures I own are my jewelry, but my daughters don't want them, because it's not their style. Lol.

  10. People mention having a memory box for my husband but in truth this is a memory house.
There are far too many memories to put in any box.

  11. I'm with Kenju. I have a thing for boxes, too. I didn't have one special one, but many filled with all the cool stuff I had accumulated over my childhood.

That so sweet what you said about the bisque children statues. It reminds me of my eclectic group of "friends". I would fill the bathroom sink with water and have adventures at sea.

  12. Very interesting - it is nice to see what your grandmother's treasures were. I have a box - it is a round hat box and I have what little of my past in it. sandie

  13. Oh, I don't know if I would call it a treasure box, but I had an old wooden cigar box that my Great Grandfather gave me as a kid. I kept old European coins from the 1800's in it, a collection by Great Uncle had since he was a kid. I still have that box sitting on my dresser. It still has those coins in it (Rob)

  16. Neat pics and a neat story...I've always had one of sorts. Now it's a box I painted that has little notes and movie stubs, cards from restaurants from fun times, stuff like that.

  17. It's so cool you have a historic keepsake like that!

I have a very small suitcase my Gramps used to use. It has one of his Russian style winter caps, his tobacco pipe, n his favorite summer camp music, the Beach Boys Collection 5- LP vinyl set in it.

I have tons of treasure collection boxes stuff in here. Recently got a wooden Angel Puzzle box, only garden spices in there for aroma so far. I also have a velvetine heart box with little things that remind me of some Aunts gone in recent years, like a ribbon I wore at a wedding she played with- so many odd things no one knows but me here. Someday I need time to write about this stuff...
    So many folks to remember...

Wish I had the old pics my mither used to have in her trunk in the attic.

  18. Hey Annie - hope you and Ron and the rest of your family are OK after the tornado yesterday. Not sure how close you all were to that, but I know you were on the road.

  19. No I've never had a treasure box, but I do still keep old stuff in a drawer. Actually, come to think of it, it is an open shoe box, so maybe I do after all!

  20. Talon -- Years and years of journals are what I dread my children inheriting, I've instructed them to toss the books in the incinerator and not fret about it.

gigihawaii-- Isn't it sad the things we treasure that our children don't want.

Pat -- I so understand what you are saying.

cube -- It is great to remember those fantasies of our childhood.

Chatty Crone -- A hat box is wonderful storage for memories!

Belle -- Oh yes, the artwork of our grandchildren is priceless.

Shionge -- I have saved a lot of correspondence but don't have it organized and wish that I did. My mother saved all of our letters in labeled folders for each child and one day she gave them to us. It is a thrill to read them and remember.

Riot Kitty -- It is very difficult for me to throw away a movie stub especially if I attended with loved ones like my grandchildren.

Snaggle Tooth -- I am so glad to mentioned the memories of smell in these collection boxes. Grandpa's pipe! What a joy to recall.

Lynn -- We're fine. thanks for your concern. I posted about our journey as well as emailed you. It was a frightening day.
