Happy New Year

FOWL WEATHER!!!!

Last night closing up the hen house, June Hen and I were having our usual quiet conversation.  She didn't have much to say and assuming she was sad, I tried to sooth her.  "It will be okay June.  There will come a day when you will hatch some nice chicks." Then suddenly a small yellow chick appeared peeking out from the safety of her mother's red feathers.  I scared every chicken in the house when I whooped with joy.

It is too early for me to move June around and try to see if there are more chicks but it is a wonderful thing to know that she will have at least one to take care of.  That will cause her to leave the nest a happy mama hen.

Check back to hopefully see a picture soon of the chick or chicks and to receive the final count to know who might have won the guessing contest.

*****HERE IT IS*****

Then there were TWO!  And that might not be all.  June had to get the two out of the nest for water and food so she had to leave the unhatched eggs.  She kept trying to go back but her babies could not get back in the nest.  I moved the remaining eggs into a nest box on the floor and put food and water there. June is settled back on the eggs and her chicks are managing to eat and drink while they await more siblings.....we hope.  Just look at those two cuties!!!

***BONUS PICTURE***

Had to throw in this cute picture of Catness.

Jeanie -- Yep that was me whooping it up. This has truly been exhausting.

Tabor -- I wish I could have recorded that moment when the tiny chick poked her head out among the warm red breast feathers of June. It was a sight to behold.

  17. LL Cool Joe -- Some of my family believes I should be locked up for befriending chickens:)BUT they know not to make too much fun of me or I'll cut off their free egg supply:)

  18. I think we both know when it's time to count your chickens...and it's not yet.
I hope we're through making fun of the roosters. They're the real heros of this story.

  19. Cliff -- I have been waiting for you to speak in defense of the roosters:)

Changes in the wind -- Looks like the two chicks are going to be it. The remaining eggs are getting stinky and will have to be removed. Glad we got two cute ones at least.

  20. Annie,

I am happy to say I am back and reading your posts again.

I was hoping June would have a least one chick to love and now she has two.

Maybe they can be called Faith and Hope.

I miss Slim's picture at the top of your page. I always used to day "Hi, Slim" when I opened your site.

  23. Nancy -- Faith and Hope it is! So happy to see you comment again. My heart has been with you and I am so sorry for your loss. The day after your Roy died Nancy cat and Bob cat packed their bags and left NOL-NOC Estates. I don't know if they left to look for Jed or if they left to join Roy. Mama David and little Catness are the only felines left on the estate right now. Slim says "hi" back. Love you:)

Talon -- Thanks for checking back.

Belle -- It is strange how attached we can be to chickens. Who'd a thought it?
