HAPPENINGS

This is  what is going on around the estate.

Ron received this lovely "get well" plant from California daughter Terrri:) Do any of you know what it is and how it should be cared for?

Neighbors gave us a special clutch of eggs to place under a broody hen.  First hen, Lucky, got bored I guess and abandoned the nest.  Second hen, June,  took over.  We are anticipating hatching around 4-18-13 and hope the mother-swap doesn't affect the outcome.  June is incubating 17 eggs.  Any guesses on how many, if any, will hatch?  I will see if I can conjur up prizes for the ones who guess the right number from 0 to 17:)

David had more kittens and in the usual place...a nest box.  If you recall David and her brother Goliath were born in a nest box and this is the second time she has gone back there to birth her kittens.  This time we have two.  At first I thought there were three because one stretched out so far it looked like two.  Thus it is named Longfellow.  Looking for a name for the second.  Any suggestions?

  1. Your plant looks like Spathiphyllum or peace lily. They are good for cleaning the air in the house and relatively easy to take care of. Just make sure it does not get to much sun. Since I am allergic to cats I suggest the names Sneezy and Wheezy.

  3. There's a peace lily in that pot + a number of other things - what my mom always called a "dish garden."

I came up with the number 8 for the number of hatchings, but I hope it's more than that.

How about Henry for the other one. I love the names you pick out the most.

  4. I don't know what kind the plant is, but I have one and it is one of the few house plants that I can actually keep alive. I bet it will need a bigger pot before long.
I am guesssing that 11 eggs will hatch....just a guess since my knowledge of chickens and eggs is nil.

  5. Tabor -- With Ron's breathing problems, it is good to have a plant that will help clean the air. Good suggestions for the cat's names. I am allergic to cats as well and that is the main reason ours stay outside.

Dianne -- Looks like Peace Lily is the common name for some of the plant. It is beautiful.

Lynn -- Besides the peace lily there is some kind of ivy. I hope it is all hearty because as I have mentioned before, I do not have a green thumb. Okay you are in for the number 8. Hope we get that many. Oh if only there were three little kittens and we could name the other Wadsworth. lol Henry is a good suggestion.

  6. Jeanie -- Hope you are right about the plant lasting. I don't want to have to change the pot or I'll kill it for sure. 11 is a good guess.

  7. Valley of Peace Lilly used to look like that if I remember it correctly.
I think there will be between twelve chicks you will be welcoming.

  10. OH I never knew the name of the plant, I got mine from my grandmothers funeral(in 2005). You just water it, mine is really big now and all I do is water it. (Monica)

  11. I would like to guess that 13 of the eggs will hatch.
For the unnamed kitten, how about Ralph for Ralph Waldo Emerson? According to widipedia they were friends.

  12. How about Lord Byron? :)

  13. You have to call the other kitten Wadsworth, Annie :)

It does look like a peace lily. It's gorgeous! and it looks like a couple of others, too, whose names escape me, but I have two of these on my windowsill right now (southeast exposure -- watering once a week unless super dry).

  14. Good luck with the plant, n the eggs.
My guess is 10. Popped into my head while reading the question, plus no one guessed it yet.

If the kitten is striped "Waldo" would fit well. I also like all the other suggestions. Tough choice! Well, you can save some from the chicks too.

  15. Munir -- Hope your guess is right. An even dozen would be great.

Changes in th wind -- Never boring on NOL-NOC Estates.

Winifred -- As soon as I can get the kitties into the light, I will show some pictures

Rob and Monica -- I will try to keep this plant alive but I am not known for having a green thumb. Thanks for the watering tip. I should be able to do that.

Seriously Though -- Ah a Baker's Dozen. Good guess. Love the name suggestion.

Riot Kitty -- Lord Byron would be a good one!

Talon -- I'm leaning the direction of Wadsworth. You are the second to give me watering advice and looks like once a week is the way to go.

Snaggle Tooth --No stripes on the kittens yet, but Waldo is a good suggestion. So far both appear to be solid gray but one has some white around both eyes. Got ya down for 10. Good idea about using extra kitten names for chicks.

  16. The plant looks like it has a caladium, ivy and definitely a peace lily. Peace lily will get root bound so it will need to put in a bigger pot at some point. Also, it just needs to be spritzed with a spray bottle every day. That should work for the other two plants as well. Also it is okay for the peace lily to wilt every once in awhile. For some reason the plant thrives on that.

I'm going with 15 eggs hatching.

I had a hard enough time naming my cats so I'm not even going to try to name yours lol.

  17. Seen it at the nursery but don't know the name. Sorry.

  18. Can't help with the plant. My thumbs are black.

I would pick 13 as the number of eggs and suggest Catness (from "The Hunger Games") as a kitty name.

  19. Oh, I forgot to guess. I say 8.

  20. We had a plant like that, it's beautiful, but I killed it. Most plants die around me!

  21. I guess everyone has already told you that's a Peace Lily. We had one in our house for the longest time and didn't need much care at all. Just a little water and it was happy and thriving.
