COMPUTER CONDOMS

Question Of The Week -- 4-29-13

What virus protection do you use for your computer and is it a service you would recommend?

My CyberDefender anti-virus program expires in June and the price has almost doubled.  I must find a better service for multiple home computers.

  1. My virus protection comes with Comcast which is expensive as hell!! Yes,it works, thus far and Comcast uses Norton.

  2. Tabor -- Do you protect more than one computer?

  3. LOL @ computer condoms!

I use Norton on my home PC & I can install it on 3 computers so I let ExBoyG use one on his. The 3rd is reserved if I ever get a laptop.

My work computers are protected by McAfee. That's what the IT department installed.

I do find that McAfee isn't as secure as Norton... or I have stupid co-workers that don't know any better than to click on a suspicious link.

  4. I've used Norton (Symantec) for the last 15 or so years. No problems with it...works quietly, doesn't affect my computer's performance and costs about $57 a year (per each computer).

  5. If you get Norton, don't sign up for automatic renewal. Automatic renewal each year costs twice the price. When your renewal is coming up, go online shopping & buy new. You can enter that new activation code & save $ & upgrades to the latest version. Norton does give you nag screens when it is coming up for renewal. That gives you a couple of months to find a good deal.

  6. None, I use a mac and apparently it doesn't need it!

  7. Yes, Granny Annie, it protects two laptops and a PC.

  8. I use Norton and have no complaints...

  9. I have McAfee for one computer, but recently inadvertently renewed for "Total Protection" package. It sounded like a good deal at the time, but then I realized that the main difference is that it protects three computers in your household. It took me 1.5 hours to straighten all that out this past Saturday a.m. I ended up with VirusScan Plus for one computer for $24.95 "because you are a valued customer." That Total Protection cost $62 now.

  10. Bonnie (BIZ) -- Did you download your Norton online or did you purchase software? I have used Norton and McAfee before but didn't care a lot for either one. I try to never click on suspicious stuff.

Talon -- Well we have three computers but one is very old and one is only in reserve for an emergency and I just can't decide if it is worth loading on all three. $171 YIKES!

Bonnie (BIZ) -- Yes I learned the hard way with Norton auto-renewal years ago.

LL Cool Joe -- And so we now have another perk for owning a Mac instead of a PC

Tabor -- Do you download online or do you own software for the three? I am thinking about buying software for Norton multiple computers.

Changes in the wind -- Looks like Norton is the winner.

I would like to know something about AVG. It seems I have heard of people using it. I use Cyber Defender and you turn your computer over to them to fix. It was great when it had India tech support but they changed to US and it is terrible. The last three years cost me $350 for three computers and now it is going to $500 for two years. Plus it takes them at least 6 hours to check my computer when there is a problem.

  11. Lynn -- The price of McAfee sure sound better than any so far. But McAfee isn't getting very good reviews. You must like your McAfee to have renewed it. $62 for three computers sounds great.

  12. I use the Norton download... just because I can never find discs once I install. I used AVG (and work did also) until they were hacked several years back. That hacked killed a few computers (including my home PC).

  13. AVG free, and yes. It's the only one that doesn't seem to install spyware.

  14. I use AVG also. It's free and I have used it for years without complaint or virus. My sister who is in the computer systems field highly recommends it and that is good enough for me. Plus...it's free! (Rob)

  15. I had Norton, but gave it up last year. I hear the free Avast is good. I run free Spybot Search n Destroy, plus free CC cleaner software, n haven't had a problem yet. If I go back to paying, prob would opt for McAffee just because I hate Norton, plus BBM uses it on her zippy machine.

  16. Bonnie (BIZ) -- Maybe they have fixed that now.

Riot Kitty -- I thought it was free for 30 days and then you had to buy it.

Rob and Monica -- My nephew also is in computer field and recommends AVG. However as I said to Riot Kitty, I did not know it was free after 30 days.

Snaggle Tooth -- Wow you have lots of free services. I will research Avast. Thanks.

  17. hi Granny - this is one of those questions i stray from the pack due to professional experience and knowledge. First, even if you use a Mac, there are viruses and worms that will affect your machine, its just not as often as a PC (PC's are scanned every 1.5 seconds on the net, so never leave a computer unprotected). My first line of defense is AVG (and there is a free version that works well). At work, after Norton died chocking on its own update, i did a quick, temporary install and protected our network until Norton was up and running again. AVG also found several viruses that Norton MISSED. I happen to pay for my version of AVG. Norton is excellent, but AVG slightly better. Now i go of on a tangent - in my past life (pre-operation) i was a white hat hacker and worked with a number of really good people and i used a SECOND Anti-virus, which does slow down my machine, but allows some extra things that most antivirus programs do not. That system is zonealarm. I am not able to do my protective services any more, but still need the double protection.
Additionally i use ccleaner (which is free) to clean-up my computer and malwarebytes (also free) as a once a week scan. There is also a free program called Supeerantivirus free addition, which is good, but not as good as Norton or AVG. Do NOT every buy McAffee, it has been a target for so many years that it just is not secure.

  18. re: AVG being free -it is, but they try to get you to buy it using many heavy sales methods, but it is free, period, if you want.

  19. I had Norton for a couple of years and got rid of it when it caused my computer to lock up while I was printing an e-mail.

I use McAfee, since it comes free with our AT&T account, but am looking into getting AVG when I purchase my next computer. One of our IT guys at work raves about it, and after reading some of the comments about it, it seems like the recommended way to go (at least for me).

  20. Brite Mist -- Wow, thank you for the detailed comment. I am feeling pretty brave now about switching to AVG.

G.B. Miller --Looks like we're both headed toward AVG.

  21. We were having trouble. Our tech said it was all caused by Norton and he removed it (3years left on contract) and replaced it with some free program that he said was better and didn't cost anything. He might have been right because that was about 2 years ago and no problems.

  22. Cliff -- I'm guessing you didn't get a refund from Norton.

  23. My husband is a very savvy computer guy (good looking, too), and the security we use is free. I'll have him right it down so I can give you the details.

On another note, would you call me when you get a minute? I am trying to figure out your grandpa Print's family. 509.991.7289

  24. Gosh... I don't even know since my son-in-law took care of it. I know I used to have Norton.

  25. They say Mac's don't get viruses as much as other machines so I'm protectionless right now...but I'll let you know in a few months if the rumor is right!
