PULL UP A CHAIR

Question Of The Week 3-18-13

What is your "signature dish"?

My signature dish: You can add or subtract from this meal but it is always called breakfast around here, even when it is for dinner.  Nothing makes our family smile more than to awaken to the smell of bacon cooking.  Grandchildren can special order how they want their eggs cooked and they can choose toast or pancakes and jelly or syrup.  The variations go on and on and so does the happiness in Granny Annie's kitchen. What special dish or meal are you always asked to prepare?

  2. My partner loves breakfast. I don't eat eggs. I love pancakes with bacon and syrup, but only ever eat them in the States. :)

Just coming back about my eye issues. I think it was the heat of the sun that did it. Without being too graphic and putting you off your breakfast, the heat caused the things to pop, I think allowing the grot out and then they took a while to heal. Initially the things looked worse before they got better. But now they've both gone completely. I had both of them for over a year too.

  3. I am not a breakfast person and try hard to not make it carbs. I need at least two cups of coffee before I can think of chewing on ANYTHING.

  4. Sonny -- You would be more than welcome. Now, what about the answer to the question? What is your signature dish?

LL Cool Joe -- Do you have a special dish you cook that your family enjoys? You don't eat eggs??? You mean even after my chickens work so hard to provide them? I cannot wait to tell Ron about your eye success. It sounds like he is dealing with the same thing you had.

  5. Tabor -- Oh yes, coffee is definitely part of my signature dish. We all (except the grandchildren) always start with coffee. What dish does your family like best that you cook?

  6. my signature dish is a flaxseed muffin and cantelope.. I like to start the day with slow carbs so they dont raise my blood sugar and last well into the afternoon. coffee with heavy creams tops off the morning.

  7. Sonny -- Glad you came back because I need to know where to buy flaxseed. I can only find milled flaxseed.

  8. These days when my grandkids are here they always want macaroni and cheese, or as my 2 year old grandson calls it, just mac'n.

  9. I love breakfast foods and I could eat them 3 x per day for a long time without getting tired of it.

  10. Hi GA
Lovely breakfast here. I would enjoy all the stuff on the plate except bacon. ( Indian Brahmins do not eat pork/bacon etc). The fried eggs (bulls eye)look awesome ! Have a great week. Ram

  11. Had to return and thank you for playing along on my blog...LOVED IT!

  12. I am guessing the family's favorite over the holidays used to be what we called a baked German pancake that was cooked in the oven. Next it would be hubby's vanilla/banana pancakes with bacon and cut fruit with yogurt. Of course by this time it is 10:00 and I am starved.

  13. Mia always asks for a roast chicken dinner whenever she's been away from me for a few days!

  14. Jeanie -- Your two year old and Ron would get along beautifully. He is a mac'n guy.

kenju -- Perhaps that is why I call breakfast my signature dish...because I like it too.

Ramakrishnan Ramanathan -- Of course you do not eat pork. Is there a tofu substitute for bacon? Do you cook a special dish? I love India food.

Tabor -- Ha,ha, glad you liked my imagination at work. Like you I could sit in airports or bus stations and make up tales about all the people I see. You did a great job. Also I am like you when preparing everyone's favorites, I'm the last to eat and pray for left-overs.

Kitty Moore -- Oh you remind me of another signature dish of mine. It is called Roast Sticky Chicken and makes wonderful chicken and noodles. How do you fix your roast chicken?

  15. Ha ha, I don't cook. Cook for the family? I leave that for my partner to do. :)

I hope the sun works for Ron, I really do. :)

  16. Breakfast food is great any time of day! I'm most often asked to make homemade pasta.

  17. Yum. We like breakfast for dinner as well.

I have several dishes that my family requests. One in particular is red beans and vaca frita (fried beef). You take an inexpensive cut of beef and cook it in a pot of red beans. Hours later, when the beef is literally falling apart you shred it and fry it to desired crispiness in a frying pan. All this is served with white rice.

My daughter is coming home from university this Friday and she has already placed her order for this dish.

  18. Yummmy, Annie! I'm holding out a plate and hoping for a dish full :)

My signature dish is manicotti - cheese stuffed and meat stuffed. I always get requests from family for those :)

    ReplyDelete
  19. LL Cool Joe -- You mean you don't even barbeque steaks or chicken outside?

Riot Kitty -- I would never have guessed that you made pasta! You will need to show us a picture of this.

Cube -- Okay I've got to know how you fix red beans and vaca frita.

Talon -- You would laugh so hard if you knew that the first time I fixed stuffed manicotti I did not cook the manicotti noodle first:)

  20. Our family subscribes to the belief that if you don't like bacon..you're wrong.
My signature, most requested is a full sirloin steak block cooked as a roast. Everyone always asks me where I bought the prime rib. I hate to tell them it's sirloin. The gravy I make with it sometimes is so good I get marriage proposals. Not always from my wife.

  21. Yummm...and I'm not much of a breakfast person, but you make it sound so good.

My signature dish: pork tenderloins, breaded, in sour cream and dill sauce with a side of white rice, any vegetable, Cuban rolls and of course, red wine. If you don't like wine, your favorite juice.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Now that sounds good and looks great.

I think I have a salad with strawberries that people generally like.

  23. I love a cooked breakfast like that. Yum - wish that was it for this morning - I do yogurt, Kashi cereal and blueberries before work during the week.

I make a Couscous salad that everyone loves. It's healthy and delicious - it's always requested for church dinners.

  24. These days I make alot of croissants with egg n cheese, n mostly cook for myself. At the holidays I'm famous for cranberry-apple pie, n my Grandmother;s homemade dinner rolls, which can be converted with cream into a large, holiday breakfast roll topped with drizzle, cherries, n pecans.
Folks used to request teriyaki chicken, or lasagna, or the easy fave, tuna casserole (egg noodles, cream of mushroom soup, n canned corn, topped with crumbled potato chips).

  25. Cliff -- My son would cook bacon wrapped in bacon if he could. I guess I couldn't talk either of you into turkey bacon? Your signature dish sounds delicious. If any of the wedding proposals come with asking Marilyn for your hand, don't you fear she might say okay?

Ileana -- Of course your dish is served with rice and wine. Who asks for juice when wine is available?

Chatty Crone -- The picture is not mine because my eggs would have much brighter yolks. Strawberry salad sounds intriguing.

Lynn -- Anything they ask you to make again for a church dinner is a winner. (poet I am). Anyway we have a hominy salad that is a big hit at church dinners with the adults but rarely the kids.

Snaggle Tooth -- YUM! All sounds wonderful. I have everything to make the tuna casserole except the potato chips.

  26. Huevos Ralph - a plate covered with hashbrowns, topped with an egg or two, smothered in home made green chili, topped with a little sour cream and shredded cheese.

  28. My partner the Hitman always loves my omelet whatever I put in it (besides eggs of course) and my Gado-Gado, which is a raw vegetables salad with peanut sauce. For the rest I am banned from the kitchen as he is the chef of us two.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Ralph -- This weekend my son make a cheesy potato casserole and when my daughter came, we put over-easy eggs over the re-heated left over casserole and it was very yummy. Sounds a lot like your Huevos Ralph.

Monica -- When Ron and I met and then the first year of our marriage he did all the cooking and even did the dishes. I learned to make his beans and cornbread and sauerkraut and country ribs and he gave me the whole kitchen. Darn it! Keep the Hitman where he belongs...in the kitchen.

  31. I will have to skip breakfast 'cause I don't cook breakfast for anyone except myself.

    My signature dishes are:

1} Deviled Eggs. I tweak the receipe so bad that people can't get enough of them.

2} Chilli: I use a basic mix (usually Carroll Shelby's) and then tweak it to the nth degree.

  32. My recipe is on its way via email. Hope you all enjoy it.

  33. Gooseberry fool.

  34. Hubby and I love breakfast, although we usually have it around noon. He also makes fabulous fried shrimp. I'm known for Greek salad and chocolate sheet cake and also for flaky pie crust!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Ramakrishnan Ramanathan -- Thank you Ram for the great web sites of Indian food. Now I just have to find a place to purchase the ingredients:) For now I will stick to going to India restaurants.

G.B. Miller -- I can give you a great hint on what NOT to add to deviled eggs. One Thanksgiving I didn't have a teaspoon of yellow mustard and replaced it with Chinese Mustard. My family literally ran screaming out of the house. Some still remember the experience and refuse to trust me again on my delicious deviled eggs.

Cube -- I got the recipe and cannot wait to make this meal.

Pat -- Are you calling me a "Gooseberry" or a "fool" or is your signature dish Gooseberry Fool? Must know more! lol

Susan Adcox -- Oh what I would give to be able to make a flaky pie crust. I have to use pre-made crusts.

  36. I'm much the same way when using hot sauce (this is the substitute for black pepper). What's good for me isn't good for everyone else, so I usually had my family taste test small samples to make sure I didn't add too much.

  37. I think a breakfast like yours is my favorite meal!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Hmmm... I think it would be teriyaki chicken and beef sticks with veggies. That's what people used to ask for on the mainland.
