FEVER, RASH, CHILLS, DEATH

Question Of The Week 2-25-13

What (if any) allergies do you have and what are the consequences when encountered?

  1. That was an alarming title. :) I have an allergy to dairy products, but the effects are nothing like you list above. I just have sinus congestion and a major runny nose and sometimes sneezing if I eat it. It's mostly stuff like sour cream, heavy cream, cream cheese, etc. There's nothing to can be done about it except not eat it.

  2. ouchie, that photo looks mighty painful.

I have food allergies. took about 5 years to find them all. 2 bites of the wrong thing and it throws my body into a serious case of candida which takes 2 to 3 weeks to get back under control..

the dust and pollen issues are more, annoying with the water eyes snezzing and whezzing, but the food allergies are more scary.

  3. Mall cement and fabric stores causes me to go very weak in the legs and my mind begins to wander.

  4. I'm deathly allergic to penicillin and apparently almost died when I was only six months old (no memory of that for me thank heavens!).

Hubby recently went into anaphylactic shock with a medication he's had before and never had a problem with. Scariest few hours of my life as he was rushed to hospital. Now he has to carry an epi pen and we're scared the next time he needs antibiotics.

  5. I am allergic to cats and will claw my eyes out and lungs will swell if I am around them too long. I am allergic to some pollens, but it is not dibilitating. What scares me is that we can get a new allergy anytime in our life. I also feel so sorry for those allergic to foods because they can be life-threatening very fast.

  6. Knock on wood that so far I have had no allergic reaction to anything, meds, blossoms, foods. I know that I am VERY fortunate and pray that I did not just jinx myself. I know as we get older and our bodies change we can become allergic to things we weren't allergic to before. Happened to my sis who ate shrimp her whole life and then had shrimp for dinner one night and her throat swelled up and closed and she got a really bad rash all over her body.

  7. Like Bonnie, above, I so far don't have any allergies....hopefully that doesn't change, but I know it could.

  8. Lynn -- I am allergic to penicillin and as far as I know the only symptom is death, thus the title. Right now all who has allergies are suffering because of this strange winter.

Sonny -- I have never had the tests like that but I hear they inflict various allergens and then watch for responses to learn a persons allergies. I don't have any food allergies but Ron is allergic to Rosemary and it is in a lot of stuff.

Cliff -- Cement...how are you surviving the kennel construction? Our vacuum cleaner is allergic to cement because all the dust from construction caused it to break down.

Talon -- Well we have even more in common. I developed an allergy to penicillin after taking it too much for recurring strep throat when I was in high school. They had to administer a shot of Adrenalin to start my heart and told me I could never take penicillin again.

Tabor -- I used to be allergic to cats when I was a child. At least that's what my parents told me when we had to get rid of Snowball:)

Bonnie -- Knocking here. My mom had the same reaction to shrimp and basically had to give up any shell fish.

Jeanie -- Lucky you and lucky Bonnie. Well, I guess I'm lucky too because I only have one allergy.

  9. Apples. Weird I know. But if I get one near my mouth my lips swell up and if I eat one my throat does too. Cooked apples are okay.

  10. I have a very explosive sneeze when I smell bread.
People just have to get used to it.

  11. I used to be allergic to shrimp for several decades, but suddenly I'm OK. No idea why, but I'm glad since I always loved shrimp.

  12. I am allergic to just about everything. But I do not take sulfa at all!

  13. Where do I begin? Mostly bugs. They love to bite me and make my skin puff up like there's an egg under it. When I lived in Texas and Minnesota, it was miserable.

Also pollen. Dust. People with differing political views. :)

  14. I'm so sorry I have missed your last few posts! I kept checking your blog but nothing new had come up. I don't know what I did wrong.

I'm allergic to wasps and carry an epi pen. Lots of different foods make me weak and my joints ache.

  15. I'm surprised at all the allergies listed so far by my blogging friends!

I have many indoor/outdoor/food allergies n had the pin tests all up n down my arms like that pic several times. My reactions are mild to severe depending on the culprit.
Bee stings n shell fish were life-threatening so far. I hate uncontrollable swelling, or instant asthma (reactive airway) due to my fragrance allergy. I'm very allergic to dust mites, cockroaches, n other odd insects presence in my home, n also sensitive to household chemicals n most soaps. I'm allergic to Latex. It's even used in mattresses!
Then there's pollen n ragweed. That's only eyes n nose tho- the most mild.
I have even had hives on my eyeballs n eyelids before!

I'm allergic to raw tomatoes, but like Joey, cooked ones are ok.

Allergies have made me very sick many, many times. All you can do is try to avoid contact, n live on benedryl as soon as you realize an exposure is affecting you...

  16. i must revise my list, since after the tumor came out of my head, many vanished!
I used to stop breathing in the presents of mold and bird feathers - now they only cause a sneeze.
Used to get pimples after eating any chocolate - now i can tolerate quite a bit before i break out
Had weird things happen with strawberries, but no more.
So at this point just a couple of minor drug interactions, which is amazing!

  17. I am allegic to certain types of antibotic so have always been very careful when I consult the Doctor for any medical condition.

  18. LL Cool Joe -- Yes that is weird. An apple a day is supposed to keep the doctor away, but in your case it brings the doctor to you!

Pat -- Baking bread or just a loaf of bread sitting around? Strange indeed.

Kay -- That is great that you can eat shrimp again. A little weird but great.

Chatty Crone -- Have you had one of those tests on your back?

Riot Kitty -- Texas definitely has a strange variety of bugs. I think I was allergic to just looking at some of them. Oh no, perhaps there are times you are allergic to ME for my politics.

Snaggle Tooth -- Oh you poor thing! Why am I not surprised? Sometimes you make me think of a Pityful Pearl doll and I want to give you a big warm hug.

Brite Mist -- Curious as to what your doctors have said about your allergies going away after brain surgery?

Shionge -- I too fear taking antibiotics. It has been years since we learned of my allergy to penicillin but because I know you can take a drug for a long time and suddenly develop a life threatening allergy, I do wonder how I will react.

  19. Fortunately I don't have any, at least that I know of. That picture even looks painful.

  20. Ralph -- You're a mighty lucky fellow. However I have a feeling you might be allergic to the same things as Cliff.

Cliff -- Now I understand "Mall cement" and "fabric stores". Duh
