HOP, HOP, HOPPING A'LONG

Visiting bunny rabbit fountain.
I believe it was 2005 when my siblings and I decided to share the expense of a fountain for our mother's apartment in a retirement home.  It seemed like a good idea at the time.  However, mother was not pleased...though she graciously attempted to pretend she was.  The first tactfully stated objection was that the sound of the water kept making her run to the bathroom.  We disconnected the water. The second mention was, if she fell she might impale herself on the taller rabbit's ears.  Not a pleasant vision in any of our minds, and so the fountain had to go.

We had all paid a portion so it was decided the rabbit would visit each of us annually.  My sister took it first.  My brother and I forgot about it.  I'm pretty sure my sister forgot about it also and had it outside their home somewhere. Recently it dawned on me that the rabbit existed and inquiry was made of my sister.  She remembered we were to share the fountain but I told her not to worry about it.  We didn't have a place for it anyway.

Recently we had a sibling gathering for our early Christmas celebration and, you guessed it, here came the rabbits.  My poor bil nearly had an attack carrying it to this little table.  (It is a very heavy fountain.)  My sister does everything with flair and had to put some festive touches on the fountain.  She commented that she hoped the rabbits didn't lose the glitter on their balls.

Next year it is going to our brother...unless we forget about it for another 7 years.

  1. Funny how the sound of the water made your mom want to go to the bathroom. I can see that. :)

I love an ornament with a special story behind it and this one is special AND festive. Love the glittery balls!

  2. What a fun story....the rabbits do have a certain charm, but being such heavy little rabbits they may stay where they are for a long time.

  3. Ileana -- I want to think that somehow our mom is getting a kick out of this burdensome transfer. She would be thinking "I knew that was a crazy present." She would also get a kick out of the rabbit balls.

Jeanie -- You are so right about the rabbits staying put for quite a while. That is until I can think of the right place for it and my son comes to visit. He's our strong-man-on-call.

  6. Hard to buy for those old folks...I just want time with my kids and no gifts. But I do love family traditions and if they occur only every 7 years you guys are living a loooong time.

  7. Changes in the wind -- It is a pretty fountain isn't it. If I can find the perfect spot for it, we will enjoy it. Hopefully it won't be anywhere we might fall on it and impale ourselves:)

Marla and Steve -- Yes it will keep on giving as long as our feeble minds make us aware. It just may live it's life on that little table. Rabbit fountain? What rabbit fountain?

  8. I love that you have it now.

And oh my - yes. We had the same issues with sending flowers to our mom at Assisted Living. We sent her flowers on Valentines Day the first year she was without dad and we were told in no uncertain terms that we should not send more flowers. (They shed, they die, the vase might fall over and break and she would cut herself, etc. etc.) :)

  11. There was an entire episode of Are you Being Served? That revolved around a fountain and people that had to keep running out to the bathroom. Neat present otherwise ;)

  12. Giving that to your Mom was a Nice thought, just not a complete one.
I'll bet a vote put forth by the bil's would make it a permanent addition to whatever it's sitting on at this moment.

  13. The most important thing is that you will enjoy it now... otherwise your brother will enjoy it rather soon...lol

  14. Lynn -- A lot of times our mother made up excuses just to keep us from buying things. She didn't want us wasting our money. That could have been you mother's motive behind the flower objections.

Sonny -- Glad you could sense the love in remembering my mother's smile:)

Ralph -- My sister never misses a chance to be clever. Wonder why any of us ever think we're going to pass these items on?

Riot Kitty -- I love ARE YOU BEING SERVED but don't remember that particular episode. I can just picture Mr. Humphey's high pitched squeal running to the bathroom. LOL

Cliff -- I can guarantee you my sister's husband won't be helping move it again. We know Ron won't, so it just leaves my brother to come get it if he wants it. Yep, I believe it is home for good.

Holland -- It is a pretty little fountain and warms my heart with the memories it brings with it

  15. The "running water = run for bathroom" effect always kills me too! Are you going to run water thru it?
I'm aching to paint the bunnies brown, myself... n the leaves green. I wonder if you have to get special cement paint.
Rabbits are good luck in Feng Shui too! Hope you find a good spot in the yard for it, n it gets there soon.

  17. Snaggle Tooth -- We are getting ready to build a new bathroom so maybe we'll put it in the bathroom...that way it can serve as an ornament AND as an incentive:)

Shionge -- Never thought of it that way. Thanks for profound message:)

  18. I love that. The running water would probably affect me the same way.

  19. Beverly -- I am pretty sure that is why fountains should be outside. Don't know what we were thinking when we got it for her. Meanwhile, thanks for stopping by. It is always good to hear from you.
