REAPING THE REWARDS

Summertime and the living is easy...especially when the neighbors do all the work and you benefit from their labor.

Those cherry tomatoes are like eating bites of candy.  I'm not sure what to do with a butternut squash.  The large tomatoes are heavenly and there is one purple tomato.  Have you ever had a purple tomato? They also bring us cucumbers, yellow squash, zucchini and cantaloupe.

  1. yummmmmmmmmm that looks so good.

I had one mater and something took a big ole bite of it on the bottom, grrrr... maybe this rain will help the others grow and when the sun comes out they'll ripen.

OR, since you have such sweet neighbors I could just move in on the other side of them..

  3. You are so lucky to get all those home grown vegetables!

My favorite thing to do with a tomato is a tomato sandwich - fresh loaf bread, sliced tomatoes with a little salt and pepper. Yum.

Here's a good butternut squash recipe:

  4. And Duke's mayonnaise for the tomato sandwich. :)

  5. sonny -- My neighbors are sweet but they give us the vegetables primarily because we let them use part of our land for their garden. You could move in next door to them (as a matter of fact that property is for sale) but you'd have to barter something.

Chatty Crone -- It is almost sinful to have to eat a store bought tomato. There is not way they should even be called tomatoes!

Lynn -- I'm with you on the tomato sandwich. Glad you came back and added the mayonnaise because I use that too but have not heard of Duke's Mayo. See how your post today inspired mine? You were lucky to get some home grown goodies too.

  7. Dear Annie ~~ Could you go back to my blog as my friend Gina has left a hint for lemons for you. Take care, Love, Merle.

  8. Changes in the wind -- They gave us purple tomatoes last year and I didn't have the heart to tell them that we didnt' like them very much. They love them and so proud to grown them. I feel the need to not take any because I know how much they like them but don't know how to tell them we don't like them without hurting their feelings.

Merle -- I always check "send comments" and I saw the message from Gina. Can't wait to try her ideas too.

  9. Yummy! I have never seen a purple tomato. Interesting. My DIL's garden..don't know what happened...she lost everything, but she's gonna try again.

  10. I have never had a purple tomato. However, my husband brought home heirloom tomatoes from a farmer's market once. Some of them were yellow or orange. They weren't pretty to look at, but very good to eat.
Oh yes, and I have tried purple carrots.

  11. Can't you just say your husband had some kind of reaction to the purple. You just shouldn't use the word 'gag' when talking about it.
Our tomatoes aren't quite ready but soon.
Marilyn always uses butternut squash to make pumpkin pie. They are 'faaabulous darling.'

  12. Yum! Those look delicious. I've had tomatoes of all colors - the heirlooms are like a rainbow - and never had a breed that I did not like.

  13. I love fresh veggies

I once saw some TV chef turn a squash into something that resembled pasta

  16. You have a great neighbor. I tried to grow purple tomatoes last year, but they are heritage and I don't seem to have much luck. That was last year with 110 degrees and a drought, maybe I try next year. There are great recipes if you google butternut squash. I cook soup and it was great.

  17. You're making me hungry...
I love butternut, but it's a bit of work. Cut it in chunks, take the seeds out, peel it back to the orange, then boil about 20 minutes, add butter salt n pepper, then mash. I like brown sugar or honey in it too too.
I still have one to cook here. Think you can microwave it cut in half n wrapped in plastic also, but haven't tried that yet except with spagetti squash.

Yep, I've been growing peas, beets, thyme, carrots, n cukes on the deck this year. Last two still haven't produced yet. The pepper seeds never sprouted. Well all the packets were on sale .25 cents for year 2009- so I can't complain!

  18. Mmmm! I love tomatoes. Think it stems from when I was little & my granddad had a greenhouse. He grew red tomatoes but my favourites were the yellow ones. I used to eat the little ones like grapes. Still eat cherry tomatoes like that.

I love making soup with squash & sweet potatoes. Lush! Wish I had neigbours with loads of goodies like that.

  19. Zucchini grows so profusely around here that you have to make sure your car windows are UP and the doors are LOCKED or you will come out of your house and find the back seat full of zucchini. I am not kidding,Annie..

I wish I could say the same thing happened with big red tomatoes...

I have two tomato plants in my yard and am glad I didn't plant more because we are in such a drought here. Haven't had a measurable rain since June 15th.

I feel sorry for the tomato growers in New Jersey here that grown acres and acres of tomatoes for Campbell Soup Co. Watering is a real problem for them.

  21. Watch for it in theaters soon...THE INVASION OF THE ZUCCHINI BODY SNATCHERS.

Nancy, your story about Uncle Arthur on the Elder Storytelling Place was fantastic. I so hope others will read it. It is not a joke that I laughed until I cried.

  22. ashok -- We will eat the purple tomato just so it won't go to waste but it is not a favorite. The others are scrumptious.

  23. Bonnie -- We have not had our own garden for a few years now due to Ron's health concerns. We couldn't have had one last year anyway due to the drought. Hopefully we can have our owne garden again but then why would we when our neighbors do all the work and we reap the rewards?

Sparkling Red --Did you really eat a purple carrot or was it a beet?

Cliff -- Good suggestion about the purple tomato. Then I could give it back to them and it wouldn't be wasted. Butternut squash to make a pumpkin pie would actually be a butternut squash pie wouldn't it? I'm pretty sure you meant "dawling" with the "faaabulous".

Riot Kitty -- Fried green tomatoes are my all time favorite. Wish they could be picked off the vine already prepared:)

Dianne -- Did the chef happen to be preparing a spaghetti squash?

Munir -- You know I didn't arrange that photo but it did turn out nice didn't it. LOL

LL Cool Joe -- I never saw a purple.....tomato... and I never hope to see one...this I'll tell you any how...I'd rather see than be one. (or a purple cow!)

Charlotte -- Yes they are such good neighbors. We try to be good neighbors to them too. We used to keep them in eggs until they went out and got their own chickens!

Snaggle Tooth -- I would imagine that I'll need to cook this butternut squash fairly soon. I think I might try it in the microwave.

Winifred -- You must share your recipe for squash and sweet potato soup. I had some once but have to idea how to make it.

  24. Lovely neighbours:)
I miss my friend Margaret who used to bring me damsons.

  25. Look, if I wanted to have someone tell me what I should have said I could have... well, never mind.

  26. What great neighbors you have. The tomatoes are lovely. I can remember when I was younger and sitting with a whole apple and a shaker of salt eating the tomato like you'd eat an apple. I haven't tried purple tomatoes but have had yellow ones.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Pat -- Once again you mentioned something I have not heard of so I had to google Damsons. Lovely fruit. Did you just eat them whole or did you make jam or wine with them?

Cliff -- It's all okay. Just settle down. You're all out of sorts because of the lack of rain. We had a nice rain shower yesterday evening and our temperatures cooled 20 degrees. I'll bet you guys are next.

Pat MacKenzie -- I would love to eat one of these like an apple but they are too precious for one of us to hog. We have to slice them thin and share them equally. At least we can pop the cherry tomatoes into our mouths like eating candy.
