# 46 BE KIND TO YOUR DENTIST TODAY

This is post is number 46 in the marathon.

Yesterday I met with the Oral Surgeon regarding a tooth extraction.  This was just the consultation to go over my current medications, my medical history, etc.  The procedure is scheduled for the 15th of March.

The nurse asked me if I wanted a local anesthetic or if I wanted total sleep anesthetic. (Actually she asked if I wanted to be put to sleep, but that just doesn't sound right.)    I said "local".  She said "That should be fine for you because you don't appear to have an anxiety about the procedure."

Her comment really got me thinking.  "No anxiety" about a dental procedure?  Times have sure changed.

As a child I did not have good experiences in the dental chair. Dentistry is now a painless procedure and thankfully our children and grandchildren have all experienced modern dentistry so they don't have the fears many of us had in less pain free times. I watch them just hop in and out of the dental chair with no fear and it thrilled me to learn yesterday that I have become one of the fearless ones.

Be kind to your dentist and remember it is a new day:)

(Of course it has helped to have my brother-in-law for my general dentistry and he has pampered me through my antiquated fears into this new world.)

  1. Our local dentist had his name on the door followed by the words 'General Dentistry' so of course I always called him the 'General.'
He took it well. Yes dentistry has come quite a ways. I still recall the cable drive drills with smoke coming out of your mouth.

  2. Cliff -- So far you are the only one brave enough to comment here. Dentists are really nice people:)

  3. I hate the idea of general anesthesia n have always had local for my many extractions. The proceedure has become so expensive lately, n only surgeons will do it here now. I always wait until the last minute to go to the dentist.

  4. I had issues with my dentist, so switched to an all chick dentist office and I loved going there. But this year my insurance is specifying that I go to a dentist in the Cigna network, so I have to find another dentist again. I hate that.

  5. I agree. With the improvement of medical anesthetic, dental procedures can now be made painless. Also, it’s a good thing that you decided to have the kids experience going to the dentists early on. Having the kids experience dental procedures at a young age can help them form good oral care habits later on in their lives, and it will also imprint upon their minds the importance of going to the dentist regularly.

  6. You got it right, Calandra! It would be best to teach your kids about oral health as early as possible. You can even brush with them so that you can demonstrate to them how to brush properly. Remember: the family that brushes together, smiles together!

  7. Yes, Granny Annie! Thanks to the lighting fast development of technology, dentists can now extract teeth without the patient feeling any level of pain. Generally, parents don’t have a hard time convincing their kids to see a dentist, which is pretty important because children need to have regular dental checkups.

I totally agree with you! Kids today can have a better dental experience, since dentists now have the tools to make procedures and treatments less painful. And I hope this will encourage a lot of kids to start good oral habits at their early age, so they can continue to practice these habits in their years of adulthood.
