THE VISIT

His hat and shoes in the middle of the living room floor.  When I complained, he told me it was "art".

Here is the spider that was in Ryan's shoe.  He was very careful after finding this fellow to check his shoes before slipping them on.

Ryan carefully kept his time card for the hours he worked.  Grandpa pays well and Ryan was trying to earn enough for his parking permit so he could take his truck back to college this semester.

Here is a sample of the work Ryan did while he was here.  This is for the sewer pipe for our new bathroom.  We have a lot of rock in the ground and he also had to be on the lookout for wires or cables.

I sure do miss him.  It was a great week and I laughed so hard it hurt.  We had not spent any time with him since he went off to college so there were many stories to hear and lots of catching up  to do.

  1. Well I think the hat and shoes do look like art I agree. Sounds like a fun week! So did Ryan earn enough to pay for his parking permit?

  2. LL Cool Joe -- Yes he did. I'm not so sure that I am happy about it. It worries me that he will be driving there. He doesn't know the area and it's a larger city. Did you notice his headphones. He was listening to his music while he worked. I'm sure you would approve.

  3. My sister always says it's like a breath of fresh air when her kids visit - sounds like you had the same experience with Ryan.

I'm so glad he discovered the spider before putting his foot in the shoe. Yikes!

  4. Sounds like you had a great visit with Ryan. I remember when I had 'art' like his all over my house. Sometimes I think it would be nice to have those days back, then I come to my senses again!

  5. Lynn -- It was definitely a breath of fresh air as long as you don't discount that air by the aroma of hard-working, dirty boy. LOL Loved the "good things" on your post today . Must add that I love the smell of all the smoke around us from fireplaces and/or bonfires.

Pat MacKenzie -- I always come to my senses again when I realize that the good thing about grandparenting is getting to send them home again (or back to college in this instance). Your story of the armed men barging in on your son's dinner in Siberia was quite a frightening one today.

  7. Golly gee has art changed since I went to college or what! Heeehehehe!!! Funny!

I'm sure you miss Ryan but I'm so happy you had a great week with him.

God bless and have a spectacular day!!! :o)

  8. I envy you getting a whole week with your grandson. I love when mine visit. It is always a fun time. Looks like yours did a great job helping out.

  9. Dani -- It was a good deal. Work and entertainment from one kid. Loved all your beautiful photos on your blog once more. Your garden is my favorite place to be.

Nezzy -- One person's clutter is another person's Picaso...right? If I had a better picture of it, who knows what a I could sell it for. Speaking of pictures, it's a good thing friends and family had picture to share of your wonderful wedding. I believe you might have a screenplay in the works.

  10. Oh good Lord, I am ITCHING just looking at that spider! I spent some time with my friend's two teenage boys recently and also laughed until my cheeks hurt. Good times.

  11. looks and sounds like he is very industreous (sp?) and so you would have had a good time. Grandparents are always a good thing (tho i did not know any of mine, i had a good substiute later in life).

  13. A hard-working, fun, creative and funny kid...who wouldn't miss a boy like that?? :)

Love that last pic! You can tell he wants that permit!

  14. I thought it was a while since you mentioned Ryan - when will he be home again? Easter?

  15. Rae -- I do love it so when the grandchildren visit. How much they do to "help out' depends on how much money they need to earn. LOL From your recent blog post it sounds like you need to tell your daughter and grandson to slow down. When in Indy they don't have to do as the others.

Riot Kitty -- At least it was a spider and not a scorpion. We haven't had a scorpion in the house since we got the guinea fowl. They manage to eat them before they can get inside. The guineas keep the tick population down also. By the way did you ever get an explanation for Mr. RK's "Boobs are not an etch-a-sketch"?

Whitemist -- We love grand-parenting and we loved being grand-parented. I am happy that you found substitutes for grandparents. They are important in our lives. Now explain the "minor flu" you had. I did not know there was ever such a thing as minor flu. Glad you are better and your food remedies sounded very good.

Chatty Crone -- Ryan did work very hard but he got in some good play time too. He spends a lot of free time in front of the television or his laptop, cell phone, etc. He swears he does not text and drive, but I have my doubts. Your post yesterday on Corollaries to Murphy's Law was hysterical.

Scarlet -- He is so much like his dad, it was like having my son here for a week. Ryan can make me laugh as hard as his dad can. However he is not yet the worker his dad is. Hey clicking on you name in the comments doesn't take me to your current blog. Hum? I read it regardless and wish St. Louis was just a little bit closer so we could meet you there. Best of luck to your son's team.

Cathy -- Yes we probably won't see Ryan again until Easter. However if he managed to take his truck this time he might get home more often...that is if he can afford gasoline. Can't wait for your next post about your Australian adventures. You make me envy your life.

  16. What a special treat and helpful too...I like his art excuse:)

  17. Changes in the wind -- He was pretty quick with that response so what's a grandmother to do but laugh? Love your winter rose. Also loved the previous post about the manhole covers. Now that would be a great thing to collect if only there was space to show them.

  18. Man, that is one big spider! I'd be spooked if I found one of those anywhere, let alone in my shoe!

  19. I worry so much when my grandchildren are driving! I think it's worse than when my kids started driving. Back then, I could at least be relieved that I wasn't having to take them everywhere they wanted to go. But now, with the grandchildren, I just wish their parents could keep on driving them!

  20. Sparkling Red -- We have learned to always check our shoes. It wasn't a big concern when I lived in the city, but since I have been a country girl, it has become a major thing. Ryan had learned that lesson. What is funny is that he capture the spider under the glass and after showing it to me, he took it outside and let it go. I would have smashed it immediately. About your posst -- is your dad sprinkling that new diet stuff Sensa on his food?

Sussan Adcox -- I worried about my kids and my grandkids driving. My son called me yesterday after Ryan had arrived safely at school in his truck. My son is as big a worrier as I. Loved you post about Dr. Spock. He certainly helped me raise my children with "Trust Yourself. You know more than you think you do."

  21. Ryan sounds like a good kid. Big shoes!

  22. What a great, wonderful grandson. I hate spiders! If I saw something like that in my shoe, it would be in the garbage. Thank goodness Ryan checked first.

  23. Glad your visit with Ryan went so well. So you don't have a "Mudroom" where all must remove footwear before entering yet? (With cubbies for shoes). I don't either.
    Poor spider!
Looks like alot of work got done to benefit all. I've dug pipe trenches for folks down the hill before. Can be a tough job in the heat. Heat isin't a prob here this week-end- We'll be about 20F on Sunday with a windchill ontop.

  24. Jean Mac -- It seemss that whether the boys have giant feet or not these days they all have giant shoes. You are very quiet this new year and I hope all is well on the mountain:)

Kay -- Yes Ryan is a good grandson as are other four boys and our three granddaughters. We wouldn't exchange any of them. It is a pretty scary thing to start to put on a shoe and glance movement out of the corner of your eye. I am glad your friend got her blog back. Mine was lost for a time as well and it creates a panic to think you've lost seven years of thoughts. Hey, how long will an Akulekule lei last? Any lei for that matter.

Snaggle Tooth -- Ryan did take the spider outside and let it go. I would not have been so humane. We have a mudroom in progress but I doubt it will escape the occasional spider getting in the house. If you have dug a pipe trench before you can genuinely feel Ryan's pain. He did go back to college having exercised muscles he didn't even know he had. I just stumbled across your Photo Essay 2007 showing the building of your neighbor's house after a fire. Amazing and very interesting to see the progress from the ground up.

  25. Yes, that's it! Sensa. I know I could Google it to find out how it supposedly works, but I kind of enjoy thinking of it as Mystery Powder.
