QOTW 1-9-12 HOME REMEDIES

Question Of The Week 01-09-12

Have you ever treated an illness with home remedies and ended up in the hospital (or at least at the doctor's office) due to improper medications?

Is it my imagination or doe it seem that there are a lot of sick people this year?  It seems that many of our blogger friends have flu or similar symptoms.

P.S.  Say hello to my 100th follower THE LAST KRYSTALLOS.  A red letter day after almost 7 years posting this blog,

  1. No - nothing that was my fault anyway. When my gallbladder was going bad, my HMO didn't diagnose it properly (because I wasn't typical, I guess) - and sent me home with all sorts of medicine for acid reflux. I ended up in the hospital for four days with a bottomed out potassium level before they could do the surgery.

  2. No, I've never been to hospital. If I ever go to the doctor's they usual give me medicine that never works or makes something worse not better.

  3. The closest I've come was I was about to run to the hospital one friday about noon until I remembered the large helping of fresh beets from the garden I'd consumed the night before.
Strike that last statement your honor.

  4. Home remedies have never made me ill or sent me to the hospital. On the otherhand, a few prescribed anti-biotics made me scarey sick and trip to urgent care.

  5. Never ended up at a doctor's office or hospital due to my home treatments...but then I do have some common sense and know when to let an expert put in their two cents. I tend to avoid taking medications until my health is dire, though. Lots of illnesses because the germs ARE getting stronger, they are getting better at hitchhiking on international travelers and we are less healthy as many lead pretty busy and stressful lives trying to pay bills and hang on to their jobs.

  6. Lynn -- I know what you mean about medical misdiagnosis. My heart problem was tested for everything but heart disease until I had my near fatal heart attack. Loved you post today of Georgia hospital and neighborhoods. So sorry for your mom's injury and praying for her complete recovery. Know she will have lots of physical therapy beyond her hospital stay.

LL Cool Joe -- I am shocked to hear you say you have NEVER been in a hospital. I think I may be confused about some things. Anyway, enjoyed your post today about watching the movie with your daughter. I was reminded of my granddaughter this weekend with her cell phone going in one hand with texting and some other ipad or something working in her other hand. I tried to change the tv channel and she insisted she was watching the show. How???

Cliff -- I'm afraid I know what you mean about the beets. Nuff said:) Glad to see that you were quoted in the Kansas City Star. Who knows when they will be calling you to get to Washington D.C. to straighten out the agriculture in our country.

Seriously Though -- Over use of antibiotics is a big cause of illness today. My spouse got some kind of bacteria from taking too many antibiotics a couple of years ago. We're damned if we do and damned if we don't. Now about this Tebow for a son-in-law that you posted on your blog. I'm wishing your daughter every success but probably more with her current boyfriend and not your dream fellow for her:)

Tabor -- It is good that you avoid medications. My mom and dad rarely took any medicine and when they did it was usually an aspirin or two. I take 23 pills a day and that is just crazy. Maybe I'll make a list like yours and put "getting off some pills" as one of the items. Love both of your blogs and try not to just lurk but sometimes I must for the sake of time. However it is rare that I don't read or look. The birdies today on your Room Without Walls are just too, too sweet.

  7. Thanks for the follow and shout out Annie! We've been lucky this year and avoided all the bugs, and no problems with self medicating. But when I do get a cold starting up I take lots of Vitamin C, the fizzy, effervescent ones, and it seems to help get rid of it much quicker!

  8. Lisa Shambrook -- There must be something to that Vitamin C business because a lot of folks swear by it. Again I'm happy to have you as my 100th follower. Your blog looks like a lot of fun and your family photo is great.

  10. No, I haven't. And yes, almost everyone I know has gotten sick more than usual lately. Congrats on 100! I have no idea who most of my followers are, you being a delightful exception.

  11. No. I remember the basics of my nursing training and mix it with dollops of common sense and - so far - have been lucky health wise.
I hope those are not famous last words:)
I think January is notorious for laying people low. Soon be Spring.

  12. Chatty Crone -- I am pretty sure that I am in the middle of home remedies right now that are going to end up as a misdiagnosis. Hope I'll live to let everyone know the story and the outcome. About your blog post and the rumor of our blogs going away in March ...hope it is just a rumor.

Riot Kitty -- I've been called a lot of things before but never "delightful". You are so kind. And you are so funny which is proven on your post today. I laughed at your collaboration with Mr. RK on the new how-to books. You two could get dangerous devising projects together!

  13. I've actually read some medical books, n have a few "Natural Remedy" volumes which have helped me tremendously, especially with allergies.
Still drink Green tea n cranberry juice daily. Eat yogurt n oatmeal more too.
Sorry I have no big mistakes to report to this one!
    Hope your experiment(?) goes well!

  14. Pat -- You are a bit more qualified for self diagnosis since you have nursing background. Are you called on to diagnose your friends and family too? Your David Bowie and Mick Jagger video was fun. Plus you have really had some emotional posts before that and I love the famous quotes. I will be copying those.

Snaggle Tooth -- My daughter continued to suffer from bladder infections so she drank lots of cranberry juice. Finally they put her in the hospital and ran some tests and she had IC and cranberry juice was on the list of things NOT to ingest. But overall your juice, yogurt, oatmeal and green tea can't be beat. I hope my experiment goes well too but it is not flu or virus related. By the way, loved your shark report today. Fascinating. Thanks for sharing.

  15. Hello Annie
Apart from coughs and colds we don't seem to get really sick at all so have never had problems with home remedies - I think the main one I use is fresh lemons along with honey in hot water. On the few occasions we've had to take them we've never had proprietory medications effect us in the wrong way either. Hopefully we won't have that happen either way.
    Take care
    Cathy

  16. Cathy -- The hot water with honey and lemon is my favorite home remedy but I have to add a little rum for a perfect cure:) It was fun to visit your blog and see the lovely kaftans you own. I sure wish I had one. Plus your view from your clean windows makes me jealous of your back deck.

  17. I'm afraid flu season must be in full swing. My brother and his whole family were sick.

No, I've never landed in the hospital due to home remedies, thank goodness. Doctor's office? Yes! I have. Not all advice nurses know what they're talking about.

  18. Kay -- It sounds like you knew what you were doing with your remedy for a mosquito bite:) Also enjoying your holiday pictures.
