WORLD'S BEST SUGAR COOKIES

Recipe for Crisp Sugar Cookies

1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup powdered sugar
2 eggs, well beaten
1 cup margarine (or butter)
1 cup cooking oil
2 teaspoons vanilla
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
1 teaspoon soda
4 1/2 cups flour

Thoroughly cream together sugar, margarine and eggs.  Stir in oil and vanilla.  Sift together dry ingredients.  Add to creamed mixture and blend well.  Refrigerate until dough is firm.  (24 hours is good)  Form into small round balls and place on cookie sheet.  Press with fork and sprinkle with sugar.  Bake at 350 degrees until lightly brown.

Recipe makes about 10 dozen delicious cookies.

My best friend from elementary school and junior high visited this week with her 94 year old mother.  I do not get to see my friend often and I had not seen her mother in 50 years.  We had a lovely lunch and I served these cookies for dessert plus I was able to send a basket full of cookies home with them.

  1. My mother used to make cookies like these called "Melting Moments" . She used to add half a glace cherry on the top of each one too. Thanks that brought back good memories. And there weren't many of those during my childhood.

  2. LL Cool Joe -- Do you happen to know if your mother added the glace cherry before she baked the cookies or after? That would make such a pretty cookie and I might need to try it. I wasn't sure what a glace cherry was so I had to look it up on google. I usually call them candied cherries. Glad I could help you recall a good moment in your childhood.

  3. Yum - wish I had one of those right now. I am off to give blood before church, so I guess I'll get a cookie after.

Dani -- I never pegged you as a cookie monster. That's a good thing.

  7. You know I am not a very good cook or baker,Annie (The banana bread was not a huge success)so I need a clarification on this recipe so I get it right this time.

About the soda you mentioned. Does it matter whether it is Coke or Pepsi?

  8. I seldom (read never) make cookies anymore. Neither of us is supposed to have them, and if they are around - no one can resist.

  10. Changes in the wind -- First I bought the basket for my friend and THEN decided to bake cookies to put in it. Glad you thought it was a nice basket too

Nancy -- I want to discourage you from opening a cooking school:)

Judy -- What about when the grandchildren visit? You have to bake cookies then don't you? We can count on there being no left overs at those times.

  13. I think my mother used to put them on before she cooked them, but I'll ask her tomorrow, and if that's wrong I'll let you know! She used to do half the cookies with the cherry and half without, but the cherry one always went first!

  15. Hi Annie~~ Looks like a great recipe.
Yesterday I made a jelly slice, which I hadn't done for years. So will try these. I am so glad you had a happy time with your friend and her mother. And they left with more cookies.
I am glad you enjoyed the jokes my friend. How is your husband these days? I hope he is doing well and the trolley sure helps us to walk and be balanced. Have a lovely week. Take care, Love, Merle.
