QOTW 10-31-11 "WHERE'S THE BEEF?"

Question Of The Week 10-31-11

What phrase from a commercial do you find yourself repeating a lot?

We know the famous Wendy's commercial that became an ad legend.  We often find ourselves repeating the line Clara Peller delivered so wonderfully in the 80's.  Doesn't everyone know it?  "Where's the beef?"

My sister's favorite ad line is from Shake n' Bake commercials, "...and I helped".

I am always saying "Sorry Charlie".   It was a commercial for Starkist Tuna where "only the best tuna" got to be Starkist.

It is amazing the commercials that grab our attention and are then used in our day-to-day lives.   What's commercial sticks with you?

(Thanks to my daughter Chelle for this Question Of The Week)

P.S. Happy Halloween
Boooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

  2. The thrill of victory, the agony of defeat (ABC’s Wide World of Sports)

Me and my sister have been saying this , seems like forever. Mainly becuase I Dad said it about 50 times a day:) thanks for the memory.
When I thought about it, I could hear Dad's voice as well as the commercial itself..

  3. I like the one "it does exactly what it says on the tin" and find myself using it too much! :D

  4. Lynn -- Of course I know that slogan and believe a lot of us use it. Now, for the life of me, I can't think of the cell phone network that it is advertisement for.

Sonny -- I can just hear a dad loving that quote and using it a lot.

LL Cool Joe -- What product is that for? You have stumped me there.

  5. I use "Sorry, Charlie" a lot, but I know that my grandchildren don't know the origin of that expression. Another favorite that I use all too often is "I can't believe I ate the whole thing!" And how about, "Brusha, brusha, brusha" when brushing your teeth. I often think it even if I can't say it while brushing my teeth!

  6. "Reach out and touch someone" phone commercial.

  7. Susan Adcox -- Oh yes, "I can't believe I ate the whole thing" is oft repeated around here. And I forgot "Brusha, brusha, brusha" but now it shall be with me forever.

Changes in the wind -- Remember how those commercials used to make us cry? Now I guess they make people think of molesters. Oh no!!

  8. Annie,

I am with your sister. We still say "And I hepped."

The little girl in the commercial had a cute Southern accent and didn't say "helped" she said,"hepped."

She was adorable and we have never forgotten her.

  9. "I'm so excited I can't sleep!" It's from a Walt Disney World commercial.

  10. A family is sitting at the dinner table and the young son looks at the Caesar dressing bottle and states, "Kasar! (Caeser) I'm not eating that!" Mom takes the bottle away and says, "Off course your not dear....not until your older." The look on that kid's face was priceless!

That's one of my favorite all time commercials...guess you would have had to see it for it to be as funny as it was.

  11. Nancy -- you are absolutely right and my sister does say "hepped" when she repeats the phrase. It is an appropriate quote for my sister because she is always "hepping'.

Bonnie (BorninanZoo) -- I'm pretty sure our youngest grandchild has adopted that and says it a lot.

Carol -- Welcome from the Pacific Northeast:) Thanks for dropping by. I vaguely recall the commercial you mentioned as a cute one.

  12. I got so many faves that it's hard to narrow it down to just one.

I'm more into quoting song snippets, t.v. snippets and/or movie snippets now.

But.....if I had to choose one that I still use with a degree of frequency, I would have to say it might be this one:

Guy is holding a muffler with six tailpipes on it and says, "We'll make it fit." (old Midas Muffler commercial)

  14. Or "you'll wonder where the yellow went, when you brush your teeth with Pepsodent!"

  15. I don't watch TV but when I was little, I remember all of us singing "I heard it through the grapevine" when the California Raisin campaign began.

  16. "Mama Mia, that's a SPICY meatball!"
(Pepto Bizmal) Still my fave. Every one at work doesn't remember it.

So many good ones in these comments!

    Boo 2 U 2!

  17. G -- I don't remember that Midas Muffler commercial but they have had a bunch. I"m guessing the muffler with six tailpipes was NOT a Midas...right?

Judy -- First you "ate the whole thing" and then you needed to brush your teeth. LOL

Riot Kitty -- I keep forgetting that you are a non-TV person. Still you managed to share a fun commercial that will forever put an image of those California raisins dancing in my head.

Snaggle Tooth -- I think that one would definitely go under ad legends.

  18. "Where's the Beef?" seems to making a comeback with a new commercial. Hut always says "And I helped". I'm not sure I really use any. Well I probably do and just don't realize it.

  21. Bonnie -- Ask you kids. They will probably know if you say any commercial phrases.

Pat -- What about "It's not butter, it's Parkay"?

Ralph -- Wonder if your cooking class students have favorite remembered commercials?

  22. Sometimes it would be the commercials I like better the program. Some I really adore. Best are the ones which got smart concepts.

This one I'm sharing with you is not like a favorite, but it got a powerful concept. Much true to what happens in our streets where I live.

  23. Sometimes I still say "Pardon me, Do you have any Grey Poupon?" too. lol always makes me laugh...

  24. Monalisa -- I got the message on the commercial you sent but you should have also sent a translation. LOL Why did the announcer at the end speak English?

Snaggle Tooth -- And I am sure you say that with the required haughty voice.

    ReplyDelete
  25. We like the head and shoulders commercials: Are you making fun of me? No Are you? No Are you? Yes. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  26. I did think of giving a translation, but then I thought it could be understood otherwise too. A father and son chitchatting this and that, and then a ditch in front. Bike stops, dad terrified. The road worker comes up easily and puts up the warning sign and asks the father, "Hey, are you blind?" . Rest you should know. Yeah, they speak English, some are like that. Don't ask me why :P

  27. Terri -- Hi. I thought maybe you were our daughter Terri but glad to see you too:) I remember that commercial but didn't remember that it was for Head and Shoulders. Good one.

Monalisa -- I guess the translation wasn't necessary was it? LOL
