WHO THE HECK IS MASSEY RAFFE?

We are being bombarded by a recorded phone call message from Bennett Law PLL phone number 1-801-432-2935 and we do not answer (thanks to caller Id) They leave a message saying "This call is for Massey Raffe. If you are not Massey Raffe please call"... some 1-807 number. "If you are not Massey Raffe don't listen to the rest of the message" and then it records the rest of the confidential message on our phone (so I put my fingers in my ears. lol).

We are not about to call the number they say to call because it will probably cost us or just put us on more lists. But we cannot answer and tell anyone that they have the wrong number because it is only a recording. This has to be happening to other people. We had this happen before and I had to report it to the FTC to get it to stop and that was a big ordeal. Anyone know a quicker way to stop this from happening? The answer from the phone company is to get a new phone number and/or an unlisted number. Of course that would cost us more. Perhaps it is the phone company doing this to us in the first place to sell a new service with a monthly charge. And yes, we are on the national do-no-call list.

Yesterday's Question of the week

  1. I got one of these once, but it did not have another number to call. It was to inform someone ( I did not know the name either) to report to the judge's office. It was real call and did not give another number. Your is clearly a scam. I guess you could try picking up and dropping the phone really fast and see if that screws up the computer.

  2. I thought... let's find out who MASSEY RAFFE is. I google the name and what comes up as the first 2 best possible answers? Your blog... LOL

Massey will remain a mystery as well as a burden. And I do not know how to help you make the phone calls stop. Sorry.

  3. I was getting calls like this for some Mary Poppins (or some other more realistic name). I ignored them and as time went on they increased daily ... sometimes as many as 10 times a day/night. One day I answered & actually got a person on the other end. Explained to them that I've been the only one living in this house at this number for many years & a Mary Poppins has never lived here to the best of my knowledge. Then the dude on the other side says, "Thank you for the info 'Mary Poppins'." Ohhhh ... that made me mad. I happened to mention it to an attorney at work & she gave me some verbiage to tell them the next time I answered & talked to a real person. The phone calls stopped not long after that.

  4. My parents are on the do not call list but still get all kinds of robocalls. "If you are not so and so, call..." Yeah right! Who is dumb enough to do that? Obviously someone, if people keep leaving these messages.

  5. Tabor -- Thanks for the suggestion. I might try that but I fear picking up the phone would give them some assurance that there is a live person at the other end of the line and they would only pursue me more.

Holland -- That is hysterical. If someone is really looking for Massey Raffe they will start haunting my blog now too. LOL

Bonnie (Borninazoo) -- I'm sorry to laugh but that was funny. After your big speech they still called you Mary Poppins! So what was the legal verbiage your lawyer friend gave you in case I ever talk to a real person?

Riot Kitty -- Love naming these robocalls. That is the perfect name for them. I can tell you who would be dumb enough to call them back...the person they have driven completely insane from the constant calling. I'm afraid that might be me very soon.

  6. sometimes you can call the number from a different number than yours to get off the list..unless of course no one picks up..how annoying..we have a few ourselves..!

  7. Robin -- I thought about that but wonder if they would then start abusing the person's number I called from. I would hate to infect someone else with this problem. Thanks for the suggestion.

  9. I had the same thing happen - some automated calling system kept leaving a message during the day (when I'm not home) saying that Brian Greene was late on his student loan and needed to call in. But of course they left no number to call.

So one day I was home when the call came in and there was an option to hold for an operator. I told her that Brian Greene was not at this number. "But this is the number he put down four years ago." "Yes - but he doesn't live here - I don't know him and I've had this number for 20 years." And this is what she said, "OK - I'll try to get this changed - what is his Social Security Number?"

Can you believe that? Some loser puts my number down (probably randomly) and I just told her that and she asked for his SS#. She said she didn't know how to make it stop otherwise. I said, "Well you can keep calling here, but Brian Greene will never get the message. Just so you know."

    :)

  10. Changes in the wind -- A pain in the "something" that's for sure. Looks like the phone company could devise a way to do something.

Lynn -- So, did they call back? I have found that telling the ones I can speak to that I'm reporting them to the FTC does work whether I report them or not.

  11. I have those calls, somewhat frequently, as well. What to do, what to do!
