Looks like a fun tradition. I used to sew a lot and made most of my kids clothes but doubt if I could sew a set of drapes today...no patience and ability to concentrate.

It is no wonder that America is the great country that it is when you consider the brave and resourceful pioneers who settled this Country.
The following is just part of what the online encyclopedia says about that historic time.
At twelve o'clock on Monday, April 22d, the resident population of Guthrie was nothing; before sundown it was at least ten thousand. In that time streets had been laid out, town lots staked off, and steps taken toward the formation of a municipal government."
Many settlers immediately started improving their new land or stood in line waiting to file their claim. Many children sold creek water to homesteaders waiting in line for five cents a cup, while other children gathered buffalo chips to provide fuel for cooking. By the second week, schools had opened and were being taught by volunteers paid by pupils' parents until regular school districts could be established. Within one month, Oklahoma City had five banks and six newspapers.
On May 2, 1890, the Organic Act was passed creating the Oklahoma Territory. This act included the Panhandle of Oklahoma within the territory. It also allowed for central governments and designated Guthrie as the territory's capital.

ReplyDeleteI took Home Ec in school to learn how to sew and it didn't do me any good. I guess some people are just born with the knack. I can't sew to save my life. I think it's wonderful how some parents still take the time to make "lessons" come alive like that. Hope looks like she stepped right out of the history books.

ReplyDeleteBack in my day, girls had to take Home Ec. All I learned was how to rip out seams. I have run tons of sophisticated machinery in labs, but the lowly sewing machine kicks my butt everytime I touch one.
Hope is as cute as a button - which is the extent of my sewing abilities!

I love your comment about your mother taught your daughter how to sew... I am a sewer...never taught my girls, but have taught all my grandchildren...as well as 100's of others as I now teach kids to sew!
