QUESTION OF THE WEEK
DID YOUR MOTHER HAVE A RECOMMENDED CURE-ALL FOR EVERYTHING?
My mother had two: Vicks salve and enemas. If one didn't cure you - the other would - in her estimation. I still use Vicks, but I have given up the other.....lol
She had her granddaughters thinking that A&D ointment cured everything. :) It's for diaper rash, I think, but they used to want it on their skinned knees, etc.
My Mam used tea for herself and cod liver oil for us!
My husband thinks I'm weird because I quite like the taste of it. Mind you I take the capsules now, it's less messy.
She also gave us Virol which I think was a multi vitamin product, being born during the war we probably did need it. I didn't mind that either but other children hated it. I must have been a very easy child to manage!
COd Liver oil out of a teaspoon. It was so awful there aren't even words to describe it. That horrid oily taste stayed on my tongue all day. She tried putting it in orange juice too but that totally cured me from liking orange juice.
Winifred -- We had to drink Castor-oil. I am not real sure what that is to this day, but it was awful. Just thinking about it puts the taste back in my mouth.
Bonnie -- I forgot about Ginger Ale. Mom did give that to us when we were sick. Vicks is still a favorite for many these days.
Mountain Mama -- I am pretty sure Cod Liver Oil is the reason my spouse cannot drink orange juice too. I have read where some cure-alls were turpentine. Cod Liver Oil had to be better than that. LOL
Fennings little liver pills, Fennings Fever cure (the most AWFUL tasting stuff ever) and goose grease rubbed on your chest.

ReplyDeletePat -- I've never heard of Fennings. I did learn that the worse the "cure" tasted, the better it was for you.
ReplyDeletekenju -- Vicks, yes. Enemas, yes. YIKES!! My mother believed that a good enema or laxative could cure everything from a toothache to at toe ache.

Vicks and Ginger ale. And when I'm sick I still swear by both. Especially the Vicks.

Yes and virtually every recommendation worked and still works...
ReplyDeleteNothing like cod liver oil or caster oil!!!!! Look at all the commercials now a days touting it in this form and that form!!!!
