NO PRIZE FOR FIRST PLACE

2010 has seen a “first” for the year on NOL-NOC Estates. When you call it a “first” then you know there shall be more to follow and I’m not talking about a pleasant race to win. We lost our first bird of this New Year yesterday.

A strange pack of dogs have been in the neighborhood but they do not appear to have “done the deed”. Our fine young guinea fowl was likely a victim of vehicular homicide. We have a “Chicken Crossing” sign out but we cannot fault the driver. Our birds have an entire ten acres to enjoy but seem to need some shiny morsel in the middle of the inviting black-top road.

And so it begins:(

  4. Don't you mean... so it ENDS? At least for the chickens with their sites on something shiny in the road. We might all learn a lesson HERE! ~ jb///

  5. Sorry, Annie. When we had chickens and other birds I always had my favorites, but I was attached to them all and hated to lose any of them.

    Love and hugs,

    Diane

  6. RK, Joe, Yvonne -- Thank you for your condolences.

Kenju -- My guinea fowl fly into the trees and on the roof so it would have to be a cage rather than a fence. We don't clip their wings because they need every ability to escape predators.

LZ -- Yep the end for that bird for sure but the beginning of our loss count of 2010. You're right though about the lesson. Chasing that shiny bauble gets us all in trouble doesn't it?

Diane -- I am too attached to my birds. When I grieve for one my family thinks I'm nuts. Especially when they see me eating fried chicken.

  9. Dani -- Thanks!

Cliff -- You know I've been thinking about adding a Guinea Fowl crossing sign. Perhaps my guinea was making that point.
