BEWARE THE CHIROPTERANS*

Halloween Greetings from EAGHL MARKERINGS. Meet Mrs. Skeleton:)Nancy Leitz sent me her daughter's dressed Teddy Bear Hughie so I wouldn't worry about my granddaughter liking devils.
My grandniece Cloelle is ready for trick-or-treating. What would you say she is thinking? I'm guessing it's "Mom is at it again."

My daughter's family artwork. Carving pumpkins only became a tradition in our family when my best friend Pat exclaimed, "What, you don't carve Jack-O-Lanterns???" then she showed up at our door with three small pumpkins and showed us how to go about carving them. I never got very good at it, but my daughter has always gone above and beyond. It looks like her children get in the act also.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN BLOGGERS ONE AND ALL!
*The Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for October 31 is:
chiropteran \kye-RAHP-tuh-run\ noun:
any of an order of night-flying mammals with forelimbs modified to form wings: bat
Example sentence:
The vampire hunters were greeted by swarms of chiropterans as they entered Dracula's castle.
Did you know? "Chiroptera" is the name of the order of the only mammal capable of true flight, the bat. The name is influenced by the hand-like wings of bats, which are formed from four elongated "fingers" covered by a cutaneous membrane. It is based on the Greek words for "hand," "cheir," and "wing," "pteron." "Cheir" also had a hand in the formation of the word "surgery," which is ultimately derived from the ancient word "cheirourgos," meaning "doing by hand." "Pteron" is widely used in technical names of flying insects. It's also the ancestor of a well-known, common word: "helicopter," which joins "pteron" with Greek "heliko," meaning "spiral."

SOME THINGS

Can anyone tell me what these are and what they are for? Ron got them for me at an auction and the bidding was fairly high. He had no idea what they were but someone was trying to outbid him and that just won't do. LOL They do not have seams and the mouths are open. One is six inches tall, the other is seven.

MORE ABOUT FORTUNE COOKIES

We ate at the Chinese Buffet yesterday. Ron's fortune read: "Your charm has inspired a secret admirer."

On the way home he exclaimed, "What will we do when we get home and the yard is swarming?"

"Swarming with what?"

"My secret admirers?"

First of all, it was ONE secret admirer. Is that wishful thinking, an active imagination or plum craziness?

ONE WEEK FROM TODAY OR NOT

Hopefully one week from today the Presidential election for 2008 will be over. However I got out my 2000 journal to recall these excerpts from my regular entries:

11-8-2000 Yesterday was election day but we still await totals due to recount in Florida. Don't know if Bush or Gore won.

11-9-2000 Still no President

11-12-2000 Hope will will know who new President is by the time we return.

11-24-2000 We still do not have a President-elect of the United States. Unbelievable! Chads, dimples and pregnant ballots will become buzz words of the 21st Century.

11-27-2000 George Bush and Dick Cheney have accepted Pres-elect and VP-elect and we would like to think this is the end but Gore and Lieberman still plan to contest the vote count in Florida.

12-9-2000 Presidential upheaval is still happening.

01-03-2001 Here we are again (back in our Kansas cottage) thru ice and snow. We had planned to come back before Christmas but we were stranded in Tulsa. During this time we officially got a President and Vice President, Bush and Cheney and........................

The rest is history. Surely this time we can avoid all those pitfalls and recounts and know the results one week from today.

MEANWHILE TAKE YOUR MIND OFF THE ELECTION WITH A STROLL AROUND MY YARD AND ENVY ME:-)

By the way, Legs is no longer. He disappeared two days ago. We would like to think he was battling for the flock. Instead of Elvis taking Legs' place, Caesar (pictured above) has taken charge. Somehow I knew he would be great someday. He is our youngest rooster. Hannah is the big cat pictured and the kitten you see should be named Serendipity because I didn't know it existed.
P.S. Every parent and grandparent MUST read Karensugarpants I Am A Rich Woman today.

TAKING THE CHALLENGE

If you want to know what I’m doing you will have to go here and here to figure it out. I think you’ll want to tell a story too.

THE CONVERSATION by Granny Annie

Two old gals were sitting in rocking chairs on the porch engaged in gossip about their crazy friend Jamie Dawn’s mindless blather. They swore to each other that Jamie Dawn could go on and on about anything.

Winifred,
the world's greatest procrastinator, asked Bonnie , "Do you believe life is good?" Bonnie replied with enthusiasm, "You bet, I believe life is as good as it gets."

Winifred continued, “I know an
old dude who is three score plus ten and he probably thinks life is good if you’ve got enough booze, broads and blackoil to keep it interesting. Sounds just like a man, Bonnie replied. And, speaking of black oil, what’s that on your fingers? Winifred laughter, “Oh that’s just black olives on my fingertips.” Are you crazy? Bonnie continued, "sometimes you act like you were born in a zoo. Maybe if you took a peek under Kay’s thinking cap you could learn how to act."

Thing got quiet a moment on the porch as these women felt the
changes in the wind. On the new breeze they could smell heaven. "I’m pretty sure it’s coming from Cookie’s Oven Bonnie said, "She must be baking again".

Winifred started to rise from her rocking chair and Bonnie said "Where are you going?" "I’m hightailing it over to Cookies and I’m gonna beat you there." "No you aren’t" Bonnie exclaimed and the two gals began racing toward Cookie’s. Both were struggling to win and both were chanting,
“I think I can, I think I can”.

They arrived at the same time and Cookie generously shared her baking cuisine. I’m giving you girls a test today and you have to try to
Imagine what I’m leaving out. "This tastes mighty good," Bonnie said, "so if you’re leaving something out, who cares? It can’t be more than a sprinkle . Besides it is good to conserve and you learn that from the example of Lucy's frugal living."

This tastes good no matter what is left out. Meanwhile we’re going back to the porch to continue
sliding through life and remembering “Life is Good”.

(Okay Dana, I started and ended with a plug for Life IS Good. How's that?)

MY NAMESAKE

THESE PICTURES ARE OF MY 12 YEAR OLD GRANDDAUGHTER FROM THIS WEEKEND. WHAT A CONTRAST BETWEEN HER GANGSTA LOOK TO DOROTHY FROM THE WIZARD OF OZ. A BEAUTY IN BOTH.
Posted by Picasa

Did you know that I am an AWESOME GRANDMA WHO BLOGS? I wouldn't have known if Winifred (also one) had not mentioned it on her blog. It seems we were named on Lemondrop. It appears to be an honor. Does anyone know how this came about? I am thrilled.

ANSWERING BONNIE'S TAG

This is the picture I was tagged by Bonnie to post. It is a picture of our guinea fowl keets that have managed to roost in the barn rafters.

Instead of tagging four bloggers, I invite anyone willing to go to their picture folder and post the fourth photo in the fourth folder and then tell me in the comments that you have participated. This is pretty neat. You can then tag four others or more if you wish.

DEFENDING THE WARDROBE

Is there a man or woman alive who has competed in the corporate workplace and does not understand the $150,000 wardrobe? Personally I am surprised they could outfit Governor Palin so frugally.

I am sorry, but for any person to get ahead in the corporate lane, they MUST dress the part. The demands for appearances on the world wide stage have to be even more strenuous.

Right or wrong, it is still fact. A woman especially can have all the brains necessary and the drive to do the job, but if she cannot meet "the image" she will not be taken seriously.

i LiYK DeVLS

Yes, my daughter did feel the need to go to Hope's first grade teacher and explain this drawing. It seems Hope wanted a devil costume for Halloween and was using this sweet picture to bring home her case in the classroom. My daughter just wanted to be sure the teacher didn't think they were practicing any satanic rituals at home:)

P.S. My computer should be working well again after tomorrow -- the AT&T appointment is for sometime between 8 AM and 5 PM. Love their scheduling? Know that I am reading you as I am able but cannot comment in most instances. Did I mention how I hate dial up?

DISCREET BOOBAGE

Here is the picture of one of my new crosses. I also received a green and a lavender that are equally gorgeous.

The necklace lengths can be increased or shortened with the slipknots. I think they would fit over most heads other that the Big Giant Head from 3rd Rock.

The feel of the cross is substantial and the nails seem to lend such great significance. I'm afraid I shall go broke feeding my children and grandchildren's cross envy. Yes, even the grandsons want them.

Jamie Dawn is a clever creator of a fantastic product and I'm thrilled to get in on the action before she has to outprice us.
I am managing to sign on for about five minutes at a time before getting knocked off again. This way maybe I can read one blog or read my email or maybe post a comment or a blog entry. It is driving me crazy!!!! I would be better off it my computer was simply unavailable, but this way I keep checking back to see if it will let me stay online longer.
YIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!

FINGERS CROSSED

Hopefully this post will publish. Our phone line is out of order and is not supposed to be cleared up until Monday evening but I'm here for some strange reason. Anyway, don't be alarmed if I disappear again. Oh I hate DIAL UP!

Meanwhile, my first three crosses have arrived from Jamie Dawn and I must say they are spectacular. I'll post a picture next week without boobage because I don't want to compete with the gorgeous necklace. (Or Scarlet for that matter.)

Bonnie, take my entries out of the witch naming project because you probably wouldn't be able to contact me if I won. Give the other's a better chance at the drawing. You have gotten so many great names!

Oh my, I am getting hopeful that my computer may be back. I'll post this while I can, but maybe I'm in business. My fingers are crossed!

5.37 SECONDS AFTER FIVE PRACTICE RUNS

This is guaranteed to drive you nuts!!

The object of the game is to move the red block around without getting hit by the blue blocks or touching the black walls.

If you can go longer than 18 seconds you are phenomenal.

It's been said that the US Air Force uses this for fighter pilots. They are expected to go for at least 2 minutes.

Give it a try but be careful...it is addictive!!

THE WEEKEND

I read a lot of comments this weekend on Scarlet's blog post where she featured my art work. I was totally amazed by the nice words bloggers had to lend to my various markerings (That's what I call my marker art). Scarlet claimed I made her look better than she does in real life so I'm posting this picture that I looked at to draw the rendering of her. You be the judges.

We received this photo from our daughter Terri sharing Jasmine at her school Dance. Our granddaughter Jasmine is the beauty on the far right. Small but mighty!

My grand niece was married this weekend in her parent's backyard. We were pleased to attend and enjoy the festivities. I believe her wedding cake topper was the most unusual I have ever seen. Congratulations Brandi-Rae and David!

Oh, and our grandson Dillon called last night as their high school band (his and Ryan's) was returning from St. Louis. Dillon said they were near our exit on the turnpike so I invited the bus load to drop by, but he laughed and didn't think they would enjoy seeing all our chickens as much as I thought they would. But the best part -- The Pride of Broken Arrow band won all FIRST PLACES!!!

Last but not least, have you seen the contest Bonnie is having on her blog. You might pick the best name for their Halloween witch and win a great prize. Check it out.

THE BIRTHDAY BOY

Okay, some might not think of this guy as a "boy" but he'll always be my little boy. Just because he's 38 doesn't mean he's all grown up. Happy Birthday Tandy Bill! (By the way, he is a wonderful single parent -- the key word being "single".......just in case anyone would need to know he is single, did I mention single?)

FAIRYTALE FRIDAY

Every Friday is Fairytail Friday where my daughter works as a Para Educator. The elementary school children each color the picture and write a fairytale. This week's story was Prince Paul and The Magical Sword. Here is a picture one of the children colored using a single color for the picture. What do you think of Prince Paul's sword?

LOOK AT OWEN NOW

It has been a while since I'm updated our new Owen. He still have some high blood pressure readings and they monitor him daily, but he is still beautiful and this picture came captioned "Bruiser". I think so!

Today I met a new blogger who also has an Owen. Sometimes you just know when you have a new friend. Say hello to Grammie at Awaiting Buddha.

IS THE FRUIT OF THE PERSIMMON IMPOSSIBLE TO EAT?

This is a persimmon tree by the lake near our house. I had to photo shop it some to show the big clusters of persimmons. It is loaded with ripe persimmons. If I were to gather a basket full and bring them home, does anyone know how to fix anything good with them?

A belated Happy Thanksgiving to my Canadian friends!

And

According to Doug Savage on Savage Chickens, today is election day in Canada and his cartoon today is a tribute. Hope you can share his sense of humor.

I AM A BROKEN HIP JUST WAITING TO HAPPEN

My orthopedist looks like Doogie Howser from India. He smiled as he explained to me "at your age you need to be careful".

"At MY age? I'm only 62!"

"Yes, that's what I mean." he said, still smiling.

I sure showed him by returning home and running into my vacuum cleaner, breaking my toe.

My husband tells me that I need to watch where I'm going. I think that is the big problem. I watch WHERE instead of watching HOW I'm getting there. Are there obstacles in my way? I don't know because my eye is on the prize. This time I was going after a cup of coffee.

It has been 90 days since my shoulder injury. The doctors, the doctor's referrals, the insurance approvals leave me in pain. I do not want anymore injuries. Between the pain pills that leave me groggy and simply suffering the pain that leaves me nauseous, there are no alternatives at this time. It is hard to blame me for that one because it occurred when I passed out and hit the floor. (Remember the Red Lobster incident?)

Regardless I have always rushed headlong into projects and don't know how to change my mode of operation. Walking through a wide door and talking to someone, I can manage to hit the door frame. Please tell me I'm not alone.

PREDICTION

Monday's headlines will read:

PALIN STEPS DOWN - MCCAIN ANNOUNCES NEW RUNNING MATE
Associated Press article by Blog World Time reporter Granny Annie Oct. 13, 2008

Governor Sarah Palin has withdrawn her nomination as Senator John McCain's running mate on the 2008 Presidential ticket. She thanked Senator McCain and the GOP for the opportunity and stated she did not wish the "troopergate" scandal to taint the election.

Palin's withdrawal was accepted with all assurances from the GOP that this would not be allowed to affect her future political career.

John McCain, in an effort to prove his bipartisanship and his ability to reach across the aisle, has selected Senator Hillary Clinton from New York as his Vice Presidential running mate. Clinton has accepted the offer on one condition. She has asked to be allowed to personally prepare and serve McCain's breakfast every day:-)

(Okay that was just for fun, and I hope you found it so. It was actually inspired by a dream I had. On a more serious note, I have to say that troopergate is a mediocre scandal that I'm sure will be blown up big time now, while the very serious Ayers scandal seems to be seeping away through the political cracks of double standards. I shake my head.)

EXPRESSING THOUGHTS FOR NO REASON

From this........

To this......My sister recently gave me this old photo and it got me to remembering...................

My family is amazed at my reliance on my spouse. My children claim that they still see occasional glimpses of their feminist mom, even though I don't want that frightening independence ever again.

I was a single parent for 26 years. My primary focus in life was to expand my education and my career to make a better life for my kids. Then the children grew up, left home and my independence was boring as hell plus I was lonely.

In walks Prince Charming in the form of a retired Navy Chief. He took charge. He said I had been running amok for too long and needed some supervision.

I had been almost agoraphobic, going only to and from work, to church and to the grocery store. It was my plan to work at least until 70. But Ron managed to get me to venture outside my house. We traveled and talked and laughed and when we talked about marriage, he promised me a life of laughter and abject poverty.

There is so much to say about the importance of companionship. For a woman who vowed she did not need a man in her life to make life good, I'm glad Ron showed up to teach me differently. He is strong, dedicated, trustworthy, charming, intelligent and just a tad bit crazy. What more could anyone want?

It has almost been ten years since my life changed. Sometimes I need to pinch myself to believe that this man scooped me up and wrapped me in wonderful.

LOOK AT FIT

I have mentioned before how difficult it is to get a photo of Fit. I caught him tonight resting in the rafters. The flash on the camera made his eyes look blue. Isn't he gorgeous? I wish I could hold him but he won't have any of that. He does let me pat his head when he shows up for breakfast.

BARNYARD ELECTIONS

THESE ARE LOOK-ALIKE ROOSTERS OF LEGS (TOP) AND ELVIS AND ELIZABETH (BOTTOM).

Elizabeth had a twin rooster. Hatched at almost the same time, Elizabeth and Elvis were idential big red roosters except for a fancy fluff at the base of Elvis' tail feathers.

Many of you know that we currently have a surplus of roosters, even with the recent demise of Elizabeth. We credited his death to a passing dog or coyote. I think we were wrong.

Our big roosters of the six were Elizabeth, Elvis and Legs. The largest of our surplus roosters is Legs. He is a strong and hearty, Ameraucana mix rooster. He is a good looking fellow and has been nice until recently. I saw Legs go after Elvis a few days ago and the brief fight sounded like the clash of the Titans. Since that day Elvis had changed his roosting spot from the hen house to the stall next door, an obvious indicator that Legs won the fight.

Perhaps the death of Elizabeth was murder by Legs. Perhaps Elvis is next as Legs does what roosters do to take his place as the King of Rooster Hill.

SETTLE DOWN

We are one month from the Presidential election. I have to think that by now at least 95% of the actual voters (i.e. those who will show up at the polls) have determined what name they will check on the ballot. Yet, the radical left and the radical right are screaming louder and louder and if you listen (which I try not to do) you will hear them calling each other the same names.

SUNDAY FUNNY

Quasimodo goes to a doctor for his annual checkup.
"I think something is wrong with your back." the doctor says.
"What makes to say that?" Quasimodo asks.
"I don't know," the doctor replies, "it's just a hunch."

BACK TO SQUARE ONE

I just realized that with the new blog rolls and lists following and followers, we are reading the last post and missing if there was more than one post that day or missing several days depending on when we check. Besides the photo of us at the banquet, I also posted some others of our trip. Hope you will look at them. Also, I am going back to each blog and catch up on what I missed while I was gone.

GETTING BACK MY BLOG LEGS

To answer my own question, unpacking is much more difficult than packing. When you are packing you are filled with excitement and anticipation. When you are unpacking you are exhausted and weary. Glad to be home you simply crash.

You took your clothes off hangers to pack the clothes but when you return you don’t have enough hangers to hang them back up. That is even with half your things going in the dirty clothes hamper. Did someone come in and only steal your clothes hangers?

You never consider yourself really home from your trip until the dog is home too. Slim had fought the leash when we left her at the kennel. This was the first time she had whimpered and tried to escape the vet’s clutches. It made my trip a little less joyful thinking of her sorrow in being left behind. Also half the people in our hotel had their dogs with them and each dog looked at me as if to say, "How could you?" Slim was sure one happy critter to see us again.

Ron and I have weird conversations in the car. For instance did you ever ponder who is really colorblind? Who first named colors and what if that person was the person who was actually colorblind?

Oh yes, from now on all my chickens are named Hannah and all my Roosters are named Claude. My guinea fowl are all Tarzan/Jane (Because they are identical and determining their sex is very difficult). It was just too sad to come home and learn my Rooster Elizabeth was killed in our absence. Some of you might remember the story of Elizabeth. He was a very special fellow.

Okay, now I’ll post some photos and think about what to share of our travels.
